I don't know if someone hitting under 280 with no clutch hits since I can remember is worth 40 Mil a year.  Good in the clubhouse but average with a bat???

Alex Bregman is a career 272 hitter, which is what he’s hitting now, and hasn’t hit above that since 2019. Bregman has been a good addition to the Red Sox, but as I said when the Red Sox signed him he’s no Mike Schmidt, and he’s not worth $40M. Bregman got off to a great start this year with the bat unlike last year when he got off to a terrible start, and now he’s leveled off, and hitting pretty much where he should be. Bregman is not a 300 hitter, and except for a few years not even a 280 hitter.

People got very excited about his 900 OPS early on. He was definitely hitting above his weight. On a short term contract, he's a guy that makes sense. I wouldn't sign him for the reported 5 years he wants.

If Bregman wants to opt out after this year then say thanks for this year, and let him go. The three years was long enough, and the $40M per was to much anyway.

If Bregman opts out can we offer him a QO?

Only if it's a Quack Opinion from our crack medical staff.

But don’t you think MLB CBOs are also familiar with Bregman and feel the same?

And that his agent - While not allowed to actually talk to those CBOs - is aware of this?

That’s why I think he stays.  I’m not sure many teams are in on him as a 5 year solution…

No.  Houston offered him one last year…

Unless Bregman totally collapses after deciding to stay with BOS, he will still get another deal afterwards. He's getting so much from us, that if you add what he might get in his next contract to this one, it could easily outweigh what he might get on a 4-5 year new deal, this winter.

I'm starting to think he stays.

He seems to like BOS and has the Cora connection.

If he stays fine, but i wouldn’t offer him anything more, or longer than what he’s getting now. If he opts out, and someone else offers him more, and for a longer time than say thanks for your help this year, and bye bye.

I think most would agree that AB is no bargain at $40million . As noted above, he is who he is and played to that level after the quad injury.

If he does opt out, then good luck, Alex .  I trust that once he opts out, the remainder of the contract is dead.

BUT, keep in mind he has $80 million in guaranteed money from Boston for '26 and '27 .  Given that those dollars are his for simply staying in place,    wonder how much he loves himself.

I cannot imagine a CBO/GM or owner willing to sign him at those levels for 4 , much less 5 years.

My bet is that we have him and better get used to him consuming about 20% of the budget .

I think that's highly subjective.  I get why people think $40 a year is a lot, but what I see is not paying 25-30 million a year for multiple years that he's older, broken down, not as good as he once was, or even able to stay on the field.

You pay a premium for not having to buy out those years.

If another team is signing him away from us, he's getting less money per year but more money overall.

I agree.

He signed for:

$5M signing bonus, paid 1/15/28

25:$35M, 26:$40M, 27:$40M

Bregman may opt out of contract after 2025 and 2026 World Series

$60M is deferred ($20M annually), to be paid 2035-46

He is owed:

$80M/2, but the deferred money makes the tax hit $31.7 x 2.

If he gets an offer for $150M/5 ($30M x 5), he will likely take it. He might get and take $128M/4 ($32M/yr).

Is he worth the difference on the back end as he ages? $70M for last 3 yrs of first deal or $$48M x 2 on the second one? I'd probably say good bye rather than match those two offers.

Would anyone give him $110M/3? (Basically add year 3 at $30M?

How about $105M/3? $120M/4? (He may not take these.)
