I think his bosses cared about it.  They wanted him to be "the face" and he wanted no part of it.

He was never the "face" before. Their expectations were misguided IMO. They paid him a lot of money to produce and he produced.

I guess it depends what he told them.

“The timing was absolutely not great,” said Breslow. “And we don't always have the choice about when these things kind of reach the point of execution outside of … we absolutely could have walked away or said we're not going to make this trade, but we do ultimately believe that it was best for the organization.”

“In the end, I think it's pretty clear that we couldn't find alignment with Raffy,” said Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy. “We all worked at it over the last several months, going back to the offseason, starting with Alex Cora and Craig and the staff, and then up to me, and all the way up to John Henry.

“It’s important to point out that this is in no way signifying a waving of the white flag on 2025,” Breslow said prior to Monday’s game in Seattle. “We are as committed as we were six months ago to putting a winning team on the field, to competing for the division and making a deep postseason run.”

Just because you say it, doesn't make it true. He needs to actually use the Devers savings and "flexibility" to make the team better now.

I thought the Rys Hoskins comment was interesting, but I guess as long as Toro and Romy are bridging us back to Casas, maybe we look for some expensive pitcher... but a good one.

Hoskins was my first thought once they didn’t get back a 1b in the trade.  I can’t complain about the job ToRoGo have done, but history has shown it’s not going to last…

The most word salady sentence ever said.

Breslow’s legally mandated statement…

It's going good for now and I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts. I think we can hold out hope at least for a good LHP split from Romy. Toro? IDK.

Clearly Toro has been with 5 teams in the last 5 years because he’s just too talented to be contained…

"So you traded your best player?"

"Yes."

"And got nothing back to help you this year?"

"Yes."

"But it makes you better for this year?"

"Yes."

"How."

"Our roster is more flexible and we believe in the culture of the Red Sox."

The culture of the Red Sox was so poor that there have been zero quotes from current Red Sox expressing frustration with Raffy. The only quotes were from Crochet and Duran basically saying "we have to move on" and "he was just one of 26 guys" that is being interpreted by some as Raffy being horrible for the clubhouse somehow.

I get what you're saying, but it's been reported that they communicated to Devers when he signed his extension that they had some expectations of him being the face of the team.  I would assume he affirmed this to them at the time.

And therein lies a good chunk of the problem - Devers is one heck of a hitter but should never have been projected as the face of any franchise.   It was a role that looks like he never really wanted.  He is a baseball player and that is it.  The whole Devers issue was seemingly mismanaged from the start.  I’m not defending management in this one by any means, but trading him seemed inevitable once he wasn’t willing to accept a role that the team needed him to accept.  0 excuse for that.  I don’t think that there was nor was there ever any evidence to suggest that he was a “cancer in the clubhouse” but something had to give.  Just a ballplayer.  Good luck to him in his new home.

A guy that would sell a lot of jerseys? Yes! A guy you could put in a commercial? Yes! A guy that is going to make a big speech or be in front of the media all the time? Doesn't seem like it! He was never that guy before. A bigger paycheck doesn't just change the personality of the man.

If Yoshida could step into the DH spot and OPS .800, that would take some more sting out of this.  Big if of course.

I think that Yoshida is still very capable of stepping into that dh role and producing.  He is a hitter.  He won’t produce the big hits like a Devers but very few can.  He just will hit and that is what we need.

There's constant chatter of 'alignment'. My thought is that has lot to do with Anthony and Mayer getting on the field.

There will be more moves coming.

Yep....we are all tired of rhetoric. I don't want to hear about your good intentions. Take action.

Breslow on WEEI just now responded to Lee's story about strife with some long-time front office employees: "I'm here because results on the field have not been good the past few years."

Can't argue with that...

The results weren't good last year either. The results so far this year haven't been all that hot. 🫠

But those green shirts and caps are outselling yellow!

And now they'll sell even more jerseys as people need to trade in their old #11's.

Save those 11s for next year when Pete Alonso is wearing it!

No, was adjusting my position on the matter and didn't feel like editing my post.

Exactly.

Replacing Devers with Yoshida would be like if the Padres tried to replace Tatis with Arraez…

The “no” upfront made it look like you were arguing with yourself.  Like you read your own post and thought “Wait! What? What moron thinks THAT?”

I just had a better idea after I hit "submit reply." Oh well. It wouldn't have happened if I wrote for an additional 1,000 words like some of our friends on here.

He may have a background in baseball but to me he speaks like an Ivy League law graduate. (hell maybe he is one, I don't know)
