Duquette didn’t say he was in the twilight of his career; he said they hoped to have him  during the twilight of his career; Clemens also turned down the biggest contract ever offered to a Sox player at the time.

Either way, he still tanked his last 4 years in a Sox uniform, especially when compared to what he did afterwards.

A little research:

"Fired 16 months ago, Duquette isn't talking. Duquette's now-famous explanation -- that Clemens was embarking on "the twilight of his career'' -- came to ultimately haunt Duquette and, just maybe, motivate the pitcher himself.

With the benefit of hindsight, Duquette's contention now seems absurd. Since leaving Boston, Clemens has gone on to win 107 games, three Cy Young Awards, two mythical pitching Triple Crowns and two world championships.

Some twilight."

Hopefully I’m dead wrong but I don’t have a good feeling about this. The offense is plain anemic and this BP is a concern.

Would be a shame because Bello is cruising.

Don't laugh, but when Narvaez is catching, I believe the Sox defense is better than their offense.

Except when he calls for an off speed pitch to Guerrero!

From a reliever throwing high 90's who made  a similar mistake pitch to a fatman the night before.

I like to call A. Kirk a beer league softball catcher but Notin reminds me he is a good hitter.  Someone should tell the Sox BP that fact.

3 straight quality starts  , never trailing , but no wins yet !

Maybe I misunderstood, but Bello is 2-0.

Sorry, I was referring to the  recent 2 games in Toronto plus tonight.   Bello has been dealing in his 3 starts where the team did win the first 2.

The difference between putting the ball in play and K'ing is notable.   Way to go Raffy.

The lefty vs lefty thing handicapping so many Sox LH hitters is BS.   RH hitters face RH pitchers most frequently but don't seem to have insurmountable troubles.

That is NOT TRUE. At the end of the 1996 season, Duquette stated that Clemens was in the twilight of his career. This perception was likely based on Clemens's final four years with the Red Sox, which, while still productive, were not his most dominant.  Look it up.

Little did he know steroids would revive Clemens' career.
