Chris Cotillo of Mass Live wrote that the Red Sox are preparing an offer for free-agent starting pitcher Corbin Burnes.

The Sox have had a rough week, losing two bidding wars against New York teams: Juan Soto ended up in Queens while Max Fried ended up in the rival Bronx.

It feels slightly odd that it is being reported Boston is "preparing an offer" this late in the game. Is it their initial offer or a revised offer in the wake of losing two of their targets early in this offseason?

Burnes himself has questions lingering around him. He's the closest thing to an "innings eater" we see in the modern game, pitching at least 167 innings a season every year since 2021. He also peaked in 2021, winning the National League Cy Young award with Milwaukee.

Since that time, Burnes peripherals have been trending down in a problematic way. His strikeout percentage peaked at 30.4% in his award-winning season but has dropped each season since, ending up at only 17.0% in 2024. Burnes is 30 years old through the 2025 season.

We set our price and won't overpay. Do these guys really think our low offers have a chance?

If they do, they are dumber than dumb.

If they don't, they are con men that are not getting away with it, anymore.

reports are now saying Burnes cost will be more than the Sox want to pay and they are exploring the option of reuniting with Pivetta. you can't hate this front office enough.

Unless they're prepared to extend themselves outside their comfort zone, or what the spreadsheets say will be a good deal, they'll place a familiar 2nd or 3rd for his services.

I'm almost never for desperate bidding on free agents, this really feels like the one we need to bring home.

Overpay the right guys. If Burnes is the best player available, you overpay him. You don't overpay Pivetta (or similar) to come back.

Henry is either cheap or out of touch with the realities of the economics of today's free agent market. if he doesn't sign Burnes, i hope Fenway is completely devoid of fans until he comes to his senses.

That's how I see it. Pick the guy you really want- maybe factor in removing some you think other will most grossly overpay for (Soto.) Just get it done on one and make a trade for a second guy.

Cheap AND out of touch IMO. He needs to be bullied into signing players they way he was bullied into extending Raffy,

If he doesn't feel the pressure to do something, this winter, he more out of touch than cheap, IMO.

There is bullying in process.

Sometimes we overlook that Henry "only" owns about 40% of FSG.

As I read somewhere else, some teams are run by owners, the Red Sox are now run by a group of shareholders.

Yes, but they don't hold a shareholders vote for any signings.

People are still going to be shocked when Pivetta gets $60 million plus.

Eovaldi got 75mm.

surely someone will give pivetta 70mm

Exactly! Nate turns 35, soon. 110 ERA+ in 314 IP the last 2 years.

Nick has a 108 ERA+ since 2023 in 288 IP. Nick turns 32 about the same time Nate turns 35.

Based on this, he should get $78-84M/3.

Last 3 years:

Eovaldi 6.1 fWAR

Pivetta 5.4 fWAR

Last 4:

Eovaldi 11.8

Pivatta 7.7

Now, factor in age and projected decline.

Watch them offer an insulting deal to Burnes, shrug their shoulders and say, we tried.

Considering Fried got 218/8, Burns will cost more. Anywhere from 225-250m is my guess at his final contract total. Red Sox don't have the balls to pony up. As we've seen again and again, they lowball and come back to the fans, Hey at least we tried!

You either Piss in the pot or get off, stop teasing us with these lame leaks that lead to nowhere, Red Sox Front Office. Shameful. Full Throttle is such an Awful Joke now!

Sox finally get their man!

"It was a pivot to a pivot to a pivot to the guy we wanted all along."

Here was the Front office meeting.:

Guys we failed to land Soto but we still need to PRETEND to Try to make fans happy.

OK, what do next?

We could offer 200+ million for proven starting pitchers like Burnes or Fried.

Spend money BAD. Do we have a cheaper answer?

Yes sell off the farm and trade for Crochet.

Oh yes, less spend is GOOD, we do that ONE!

What about Burnes, Fried is gone.

Oh we Pretend to go in for him too, the Fans are Suckers, they will buy our Act!

:D
