A fair point.

However, O'Neill has been sidelined with a wrist injury, a groin injury, a hamstring strain. Probably a few others. These seem like typical baseball player injuries that on their own, are not indicative of long term steroid usage.

However, I can only find reported injuries. He may have had some secondary ones that didn't get in the papers...

Andy Pettitte famously took steroids to be injured all the time from what I remember.

Even though PEDs can drastically reduced recovery times, players can still get injured, re-injured or another acute injury.

Some guys just suck at staying healthy.

I suspect St. Louis gave up on him for good reason.

But hey, one team's trash is another team's...Allen Craig.

Implying ST. Louis gave up on O'Neill for suspected steroid use? Or his frequent injuries? And not because they had Carlson, Nootbaar, Walker, O'Neill, Edman and Burleson all on the OF/DH depth chart and only 4 position to play them in, assuming they buried one as a DH? And factor in that O'Neill was the only one with one season left?

I'm sure they didn't like his injuries, but even without them, there was enough there to easily believe he was clear trade bait...

Indeed.

Contract year, too.

And the Sox didn't give up much for him, except the players they acquired for Kike Hernandez and CJ Chatham...

Oh, you're going to add actual logic to this conversation?

Just taking out some frustration on O'Neill, I guess, because I'm so thoroughly disgusted with the effort this offseason.

At least give our beefy boy a chance.

So ST starts and the conversation revolves around a .200 hitting bench player?

A career .250 hitter to be fair.

Posted

Not all .24795 hitters are the same.

While a .318 OBP is not great, his .458 SLG is decent.

Last 3 seasons:

.255 BA

.329 OBP

.472 SLG

.800 OPS (120 OPS+)

Per 650 PAs (a big if)

.255 30 85 (18 SB and plus D)

How dare you debate BA!!!!!!

Qualified hitters .300 or better:

2023 - 9

2013 - 24

2003 - 40

1993 - 35

1983 - 26

1973 - 16

1963 - 15

1953 - 27

1943 - 13

1933 - 39

1923 - 52

1913 - 21

1903 - 28

1893 - 33

1883 - 22

1873 - 24

Considering that there are far more players today, 2023 was far worse for baseball than World War 2. Discuss.

Any hitter that doesn't have a batting average over .280 sucks. Luis Arraez is the league's best player.

We checked with Red Sox assistant team physician, Dr. Jerry Graham on his examination of O'Neill. He said, " The man is a genetic freak. All natural body. Never touched a steroid. Bench presses thousands of pounds. Just look at his daddy. Tyler O'Neill is the real deal. As clean as Sweet Caroline. Sox fans favorite Valentine. Whoo. "

Last time there were this few .300 hitters, MLB lowered the mound by 33%. If they would do that again, might as well just have pitchers throw from a rubber on flat ground -- like in softball.

Who here wasn't a better batter in slow-pitch softball than in hardball?

Ever tried hitting slow pitch softball after playing baseball? Last time I did it, my timing was so off , my bat would zip through the zone while the ball was still floating towards me. Way out in front of everything…

Yep, but in reverse. After about a decade of timing 12-foot arcs, I joined a new over-30 hardball league... and basically sucked at both.

Way behind a real fastball, I finally got my first hit; laid one down.

I still had some batspeed, but I was only hitting stuff off the end of the bat. Basically just hit lots of pop ups to CF.

Now which is harder? Baseball or fast pitch softball? It seems obvious, but have you ever tried facing an underhand pitch traveling 50-60 mph from only 40 feet away?

People in my area know I have been a die-hard Sox fan for MANY MANY years. I followed the team through the heartbreaks of 1975. 1986, 2003 and the many bad years. I rejoiced with you all after the 2004 WS and the others that followed. I will always credit John Henry for spending and doing what it took to give the Sox the best chance to win. I also recall the SEVERAL times Henry was quoted as saying he would do his best to insure the Sox could contend for a WS EVERY year. Now after several LAST PLACE finishes and reduced payroll commitment from an owner who seems to have lost his passion for the team I have also lost MY passion for the Red Sox.

Spring training is supposed to be the time when HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL but I can tell you that I don't feel that all. After listening to all the lies about going FULL THROTTLE from the FO the Red Sox IMO are today WORSE than the team that finished last in 2023. I will check in on occasion but I can tell that I won't be fully invested. Enjoy another last place finish Mr Henry !!!

There's a great cliip of (Yankees? I forget who) taking swings against a softball women's pitcher. When the guy steps in, all the fielders lay down in the infield. He did not get even a foul ball.

Today is the first official day when pitchers and catchers report to Florida. It's traditionally a big day for baseball fans, especially New Englanders who can see light at the end of winter.

But the Red Sox are now so irrelevant that there's hardly any mention of it in local news. Happy V-Day (today's contest: identify the V-word... vapid, vacate, vague, venomous, vetc.)

Adjusting to playing slow pitch is brutal. Some dudes have a natural loftier swing for that, not me.
