High schoolers are typically the higher ceiling picks. Think about it - we’re talking about a pool of players already identified as having potential MLB talent before age 18. Of course they’re also usually tougher to sign, since they have the option of going to college. And many use that in their negotiations.

College players often took longer to get noticed. Doesn’t mean they’re going to be better or worse. But it does often mean they’re older. Wyatt Langford was mentioned earlier as making MLB before Mayer. Langford played college ball at University of Florida, and is actually 13 months older than Mayer, despite being drafted 2 years later…

I totally understand the strategy, but as a GM on an apparent 4 year plan, you are shooting yourself in the foot to maybe help the next GM replacing you.

That would be an awful way for a GM to think, wouldn't it?

Agreed.

My statement was not meant to suggest he should have tried to get more instant gratification by drafting college players, instead, so as to prolong his tenure with the Sox, but more about his strategy being geared more for the extended future over the here and now.

I'm not saying he'd still be around had he drafted more college players, but it does look like his drafting should help Breslow more than it helped himself.

Much of Bloom's prospect additions are still speculative in value. We don't really know how well he did, in the long view. His additions that helped during his tenure are:

Whitlock (Rule 5)

Winckowski (trade)

Wong (trade)

Abreu (trade)

Bernardino (waivers)

Z Kelly (MiFA)

Speculative (SP's rankings)

1. Anthony draft

2. Mayer draft

3. Teel draft

5. Bleis IFA

6. Yorke draft

10. Cespedes draft

12. Zanetello draft

14. Meidroth draft

16. Joh Garcia IFA

17. Hickey draft

19. Romero draft

20. Jordan draft

21. Monegro IFA

22. DHam (trade)

23. Anderson draft

Dobbins, E R-C, Guerrero, Hoppe, Arias, Troye, Rogers, Brannon, Gambrell, C Coffey, I Coffey, Paez, Asencio, Yuten, Ravelo, K Campbell, Cepeda, Sena, Reimer, Rosier, Sogard, Soto, Early, Judice

If a GM is on a 4 year plan, I hope he isn’t relying too heavily on the draft…

Henry has established he's not a big believer in 5 year plans for GMs.

Agreed, but you might get some help from your first draft, if you drafted college players.

Again, I'm not saying that should be a GM strategy, but Bloom's "long look" approach did not help him stick around. It may help Brez stick around longer.

I think Henry believed in the long view as long as there was some degree of success at the big league level, but on a limited budget.

It is literally an impossible position for a GM following after desperate Dave. I would like to believe hang’em Chaim took a bullet to get the process started, but I cannot figure out why hang’em chaim avoided putting quality resources into pitching ????

He did make a few efforts, like offering Nate what he ended up getting, but later saying no, when Nate came back. He offered the same as TBR for Eflin, but lost out to "hometown" considerations. I'm not sure JH was open to any major signings, but missing out on those two does show he could have spent more than he did.

That was certainly a big part of his downfall.

He did well with Wacha.

He did okay with Hill.

He swung and missed wildly with Richards and Kluber.

It looked like he miss times the Perez signings.

That's pretty much it for 4 years.

That’s still bad. You’re potentially passing on better players to accommodate a timeline with the draft. If you’re pressed for time, you need to prioritize trade market over drafts…

Again, I am not saying drafting college players is or would have been better.

I’m just pointing out that HS picks do not help GMs on 4 year plans keep their jobs for longer than 4.

Unless you can draft like the O's.

Isn’t he like 30 now?

He turns 24, this July.

He began playing in the Sox organization since 2018. (5 years.)

On soxprospects.com he reached #4 in the fall of 2019.

#5 in fall of 2020.

#9 end of 2021, but #18 to start 2022. Out of the top 30 by the end of '22.

When I saw him, he jumped on fastballs and struggling with off speed and breaking balls

Nick Yorke will begin the season in AA, per @bradfo

So, Grissom will be rehabbing in AAA? To start their season?

That's the rumor since he really had no Spring Training.

Hard to not like what you saw from Richard Fitts today against the defending champs:

3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks

Good velocity, nice slider, felt in command. Gonna be an interesting guy to watch this year.

Posted this here so that I don't get yelled at elsewhere for being too trusting.

I agree about Fitts, but the rest is a big WOW! Yelled at? Over exaggerating, and over analyzing 101.🤭🙈

Who gets sent down from Boston when Grissom gets called up?

Posted
Yup.

Reyes can play SS, so he's the keeper.

Not sure if Reyes can be sent down without clearing waivers. Valdez can…
