And when he's gone the focus will turn to the new worst one.

Criswell? He actually has value as an emergency starter.

Mata will probably be put on the 60 day IL or DFA'd. Hendriks needs to be added to the 60 day IL.

The overall pitching depth seems pretty good IMO.

Does it? What if Giolito is Kluber Redux?

Hendriks will surely be added to the 60 day IL, at some point, so one slot will open there. Hopefully for Monty, Clevinger or at least Lauer, but even if not, it won't be for Sogard.

Also, by the end of ST'ing Sogard might be at a .650 OPS and forgotten.

He said depth, not our #1/2 slot SP'er.

Last season, we started the year with Whitlock, Paxton, Bello, Joely & MIlls on the IL. Kelly joined them.

Let's say this was our all healthy 13 in 2023, on opening day, and the depth:

13:

Kluber, Sale, Paxton, Bello, Pivetta

Jansen, Martin, Whitlock, Houck, Crawford, Schreiber, Bleier, Brasier

Depth (as seen on opening day):

Winckowski, Joely, Ort, Murphy, Walter, Jacques, Llovera, Garza, Sherriff

(Bernardino, Weiss, Dermody, Bearclaw, Robertson & otherswere added mid season)

That is awful pitching depth.

This year's "all healthy" 13:

Giolito, Bello, Pivetta, Crawford, Houck

Jansen, Martin, Whitlock, Winckowski, Bernardino, Hendriks, Slaten (Rule 5 limited), Mata (out of options)

Depth:

Murphy, Criswell, Fitts, Walter, Gambrell (Wikelman?)

Campbell, Weissert, Joely, Kelly, Luetge, Guerrero, Hagenman, Politi, German, Song, Jacques, Booser

This may not look grat, but it looks like a significant improvement over last year.

Bailey has already said he doesn't think they need to add any pitchers. He likes what they have...

Why do we keep adding people that are clearly high?

Their words are just stock lines.

Prez: "We plan on competing for the world championship."

CBO: "We'd be remiss if we didn't always look to upgrade."

Coaching staff: "We like our players."

Less fans than ever: "We believe every single lie you tell us, and have total faith you'll make the Red Sox great again."

I think the rotational depth stinks, but the reliever depth is very strong.

With Giolito getting injured, they are relying on Whitlock to stay in the rotation all year. That doesn't seem likely to me. I think we'll end up seeing starts from Murphy, Walter, Criswell and maybe Gambrell before the ASB. Henry isn't adding to this ballclub.

This thread will be the top thread of the 2024 season.

At least a lot of the games are broadcast on MLB.tv.

They will have at least two open spots on the 40 man roster once they start adding Mata, Giolito, and Hendricks to the 60 day IL. I assume Cron gets one of them…

Mata on the 60 with a hamstring pull?

Let's assume these 3 go on the 60, these might be some guys added, at some point:

1B

Cron (if we don't like Dalbec on the 26.)

P

Fitts

Gambrell

Luetge

Guerrero

Hagenman

IF

Yorke

Sogard

Westbrook

OF

Contreras (I doubt it)

Am I missing anyone?

I feel like they'd DFA Dalbec to put Cron on the 40 man. No other reason to add him. If they are pushing pitchers to the 60 day IL, why replace them with hitters?

More likely they add Joely and Luetge.

Agreed on all this, assuming everyone is healthy and ready to pitch or play on opening day.

I would not mind seeing someone like Jacques DFA's over Dalbec, and keep BD in AAA, in case Cron sucks or gets hurt, but DFA'ing him is fine with me.

Cron has generally been healthy and even his bad season last year of 82 wRC+ is better than what we've seen recently out of Dalbec. Cron would demolish AAA pitching if he was there for very long. He'd put up Judge '22 numbers IMO.

They can add 3 players once they actually start moving bodies to the 60 day IL.

I get why Giolito isn’t added yet, and not sure if Mata is actually going to the 60 day IL. But no idea why they haven’t added Hendricks to it yet.

I have strongly suggested DFAing Dalbec multiple times, but I think what keeps him around is that he has an option year left. Also if the goal is to have a RHH that excels vs LHP, Dalbec (.855 OPS vs LHP) has shown himself to be a better option than Cron (.814 OPS vs LHP career, .747 VS LHP last season)…

I think the longer you wait, the later the 60 days is up, right?

Maybe they want some of these guys to come off the 60 IL after May..

No. We just invested more money in Bello than any pitcher signing or extension given out in the Bloom Era.

Bello is guaranteed even more money to actually pitch than Giolito will make to not pitch for Boston.

If the goal is to get them off sooner, you have to add them sooner.

Although in the cases Hendriks and Giolito, the Sox are clearly looking at two pitchers out for all of 2024 (and, in Giolito’s case, half of 2025 as well).

In the case of Giolito, the Sox are still exploring options and investigating the extent of the injury, so i understand why he hasn’t been placed yet. Not sure why Hendriks hasn’t been placed yet…

A lot of these guys were agreed to long before Crag showed up.

No real rush to add someone to the 40 man. That pitcher may get a minor injury prior to the start of the season. Just do the roster moves at the end of camp unless you need to add an unsigned guy.

That's my point.

There is a rush to add someone to the 40 man, particularly if that someone is a pitcher still in search of a contract...

Good point. We know hang’em Chaim avoided pitchers and right handed hitters

They aren’t in a rush to sign anyone else.

From Dave to Craig none of these guys have any active involvement in the signing of 16 year old players from Venezuela/Dominican Republic. That’s almost solely on the international scouting department. I also highly doubt anyone can number how many pitchers/RHB we’ve taken over the last 5 years either.

But I’d bet some would be surprised if they looked it up.

They should be.

Sign Lorenzen and he also fills the RHH OF requirement…
