Are you sure Teoscar is better than O’Neill in RF on D?

I’m not. I imagine O’Neil is better at any position. But I can’t be sure how they will lineup. I just wanted the names for now…

Breslow has been nothing but brilliant in his moves so far...can't think of a team in a better position than the 2024 Boston Red Sox...Go Sox!

With the utmost respect what are you on ?

Okay. I would have flipped them.

That’s fine. I only put O’Neil in LF because Roster Resource and Soxprospects both did. Teoscar has played RF, but if the Sox sign him (ugh) he might very well play RF. Cora didn’t strike me as someone who will rearrange players for defense…

I said before, I like this trade a lot of they’re signing 1-2 other starter and one of those starters is better than Giolito. With the Salw trade, I’m much more comfortable that will happen.

I’d still rather have Sale in my 5 than Crawford or Pivetta, so I’d prefer getting a 1-2 AND keep Sale.

If they money saved in the trade is the difference maker in getting a 1-2, fine, otherwise no.

Having Sale in your five doesn’t push anyone out…

Anyways I’ll say it again. I like this move. I will like it better if they go out and get a guy better than Giolito.

One more question - will you like it less if they don't?

Good question. No I won’t. But I’ll dislike the off-season as a whole much more if they don’t.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe for 5 starts, maybe for 20, maybe with some luck 28-30.

Because Sale is better than nothing.

Unless we add a better SP, we just subbed Gio for Sale and still have not one but 2 holes in the rotation.

Fine, Gionis s better bet than Sale. We got better at the number 3-4 slot. It’s still a punt if we don’t add 1-2 more SPers better than a #3, IMO.

To me this little flurry of moves suggests Breslow is far from done.

I can certainly see your point, and don’t disagree.

Giolito will likely pitch way more in ‘24 and could maybe pitch better than Sale.

We basically traded Sale for Giolito and Grissom at a cost of $9M ($19M for Gio- $10M saved on Sale.) That does look good, on paper based on a few assumptions, of course.

If we don’t add 2 more SPers, it won’t matter anyway. We aren’t going anywhere nice in’24. Maybe adding one really good SP might be enough, but I doubt it.

We do y know how much we will spend or who we might trade in the next month or two, but this roster still has two big holes I throw rotation. We did not address that with the Sale- Gio flip. Adding two more would improve how these two moves look.

I hope so.

It does look like we finally filled the 2B hole, but that’s not really a certainty.

IMO, we still need 1 SPsignificantly better than Gio and Sale (Monty, Snell or trade?), and one as good or better than Gio (Stroman or Imanaga?)

After freeing up another $10 mill, they have even less excuse not to get that #1 pitcher.

Agreed.

I actually wish it means this:

$37Mmskes it hard to add 2 very good SPers, unless one is by trade.

$47M makes it easier to add 2 very good SPers without trading top prospects for one.☝️

I'm just hoping for Monty/Snell or a good starter in a trade.

One really good SPer would be enough to give us some hope, but I’m tired of going into seasons thinking we need 5 of 6 big concern areas to all work out to just make the playoffs. I’d like to have a roster with a consensus expectation we make the playoffs and are likely to advance.

I know nothing is certain, but try to plan on making it as certain as possible. Adding two very good SPers takes us much closer to that expectation of being a strong contender.

I realise adding Monty and Snell assures nothing, but I’d like our odds.

Well I do not think Montgomery is a true #1 SP so I am not sure who you are thinking of. Obviously there is another moving coming on SP but right now our rotation is arguably worse than it was a week ago.

He hasn't really proved he's a #1 yet, but he was one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball last year using WAR.

yes BOTH Snell AND Montgomery would increase our chances dramatically but does anyone actually think we will get both? I know I don't.

I don’t know what all that means, but Monty is never going to be something like Chris Sale used to be, and a top 10 pitcher in maybe a down year doesn’t mean he is really all that good. Pitching good down the stretch, and into the postseason to me made him look better than he really is kind of like Evol in 2018. A #1 starter today isn’t what a #1 used to be, but after saying all of that Monty would still help the Red Sox.

i would not feel comfortable matching him up again other top team's #1 SP

Despite my tagline I’d be very surprised if this team signed Montgomery and Snell.

I think we sign one to two from the Stroman, Imanaga, Paxton group or trade for a guy still.

One thing is for certain, Breslow is expected to fix this team in one year. But that’s not realistic. If he doesn’t believe in those guys, and they get overpaid drastically, and that affects the decisions he can make because he has a budget then I won’t blame him for not going after Montgomery and Snell.

I like those two, and I’d be excited if we sign one. But I’m having serious doubts we do now.

Do people really sit there, and watch a game, and analyze that a so called #1 pitcher is going against another so called #1 pitcher, or a #2 pitcher is going against a #4 pitcher? Nothing wrong with it, but not something I would do.

Not true.

In the last week, the Sox have added 180 IP from Giolito and subtracted 50IP from Sale.

That’s a net gain…

You're making it sound like the last 2 transactions make it less likely. I don't see why.

He’s expected to get the Red Sox back to at least a winning team, and a trip to the postseason would be icing on the cake.

In innings yes. Don’t forget to add his 41 HR allowed.
