Sox are likely to sign Paxton to a 1 yr deal with a club option for yr 2 and then go with this rotation:

Paxton

Bello

Sale

Pivetta

Crawford

Houck first up if someone goes down

It looks like our best hope might be Imanaga. Giolito is also a possibility. I would not bet against Paxton out pitching Giolito in ‘24.

Maybe we end up with Imanaga and Paxton.

Trade for Polanco or Dury.

Maybe sign Teoscar and trade Duran?

Would trading Jansen and/or Martin this winter be punting to some posters?

What if they were included as part of a package that upgraded another area for the '24 big league Red Sox?

They are expiring deals on older players and could bring back a good return. I think holding onto them and getting nothing in return would be a waste. Ideally they'd trade Jansen and keep Martin until the deadline pending the state of the Red Sox in late July.

... for a sec, I thought I read "pending the sale of the Red Sox" -- but we're still mired in the '23 scoffseason.

Martin was the Sox' best player at his job this year, and it would make sense to optimize his value when considering when to deal him. It would seem a return may be better this winter, because a trade partner may swap more to have Martin at the beginning of the '24 season.

The other factor is that there is absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that Martin will automatically duplicate his near perfect '23 -- and thus retain his current value... especially since he'll be a year older into his older age (though he may retain most of his gray hair -- unlike the more balder posters on talksox).

If we're giving up on 2024, sure.

If we're not giving up on 2024, I fail to see how having Jansen on the team is a waste.

It's all about how this ******** front office has us thinking these days.

Not that I'm on board with this concept, but if the F.O. thinks a guy like Hader can be their shut down closer for years to come and they think they can cash in on Jansen it's not a bad move to go out and get a guy who can be just as good if not better and strengthen the farm.

More likely Paxton and Giolito.

Imanaga will be too expensive for this penny-pinching outfit. He'll probably get more than ERod or Gray.

Sure, but they're probably too cheap to sign Hader either.

I do t think we get Imanaga, but he or Stroman might still be a slight hope.

Giolito does not impress me at all.

Agree with your scenario, but differ on closer -- go get Devon Williams, as part of a blockbuster trade with Brewers. He's younger than Hader, arguably better (higher WAR past two years), and probably available... along with Burnes, Adames and Yelich, who would considerably soften the demand for burning down the farm in return.

Wanna make a splash and also get serious about winning? Acquire some winning ballplayers. Milwaukee may not play in the monstrous AL bEast, but these guys have been in a lot of postseasons, compared to our favorite fifth-best Sox.

Burnes is a no-go. He's already said he's not signing an extension unless he's blown away. Teams like the Red Sox need not apply.

"Stroman might still be a slight hope" kind of says it all, moon.

That it does.

I went into this winter with zero expectations but some faint hopes our management might snap out of it.

It looks more and more like a long wait for the top prospects to arrive and settle in.

Full throttle sham is what this is.

I’ll still watch the games and hope the kids can carry us, but I can’t see us doing better than last year even with Stroman and Paxton, alone.

Let's face it, if they sign Paxton he might pull an Aaron Rodgers and not even make it through his first inning.

I wouldn't have given up? Has this FO?

The rumor is that they were looking to trade Jansen. If they were bringing in Yamamoto or a top tier starter, I'd keep Jansen around. However, this is a team still on the outside looking in. At best, they are a playoff contender. If they trade a closer that had a 4.61 xFIP last season, is it the end of the world?

This is the guy that is the risk of being overpaid.

I'm sure the Brewers are thrilled with his comments this offseason!

This should also make the return for him a lot less for the Brewers, If this perserves the top of my farm system I'd still consider making a play for him.

You're not just getting him for one year you're getting.

1 year of Burnes

A draft pick when he almost certainly leaves.

Despite his comments, a whole year to build rapport and possibly resign him.

If you can get him without giving up too much, I'd still be calling on the Brew crew.

Burnes has been extremely displeased with his results in the arbitration system. Rapport or not, he wants to be paid because he feels like he’s always been underpaid.

He’s not taking a discount. I don’t bare how much he likes the clam chowder…

Who says he's taking a discount, you offer him a contract he finds fair then maybe he does sign an extension.

A.) I'm not saying it happens, or even the Sox think he's worth what he wants.

B.) that's like a secondary benefit, like the DSL throw in to a trade. I make this trade if I'm not giving up top tier prospects because the thought of him not talking extension and only being a 1 year rental depresses his return.

Which is why he's probably not going to cost you even 1 of your top 6 or 8 prospects.

Brewers will need at least a return that's better than a comp pick, but my guess is they want a lot more.

They wont get more than the return for Soto.

Probably a bad comp, with Girsham and multiple years of control ultimately effecting the value of that trade.

And Burnes isn’t projected to make $33mill in arbitration

Disagree.

But I think he won’t cost 2 of them…

Nobody is giving the brewers a top 50 prospect for one year. We also have no ideal how Milwaukee values our guys. Are they high on Yorke? Zanetllo? Maybe they really really like Perales. I should probably lower my projection to top 5.

For one year of a guy who is going to free agency in a year.

3 years of Chris Sale got you two. 1 year doesn’t get you one. But hey who knows, maybe the Breweries find someone desperate
