The goal post didn’t move I mentioned frontline starter when I referenced the article on CBS.

I wasn’t referring to that.

You responded to my post about him being a top 12-15 pitcher and being almost as good as anyone.

Oh no, now we have the term "frontline" starter to deal with. Didn't Monty look pretty frontline in the playoffs?

So because Monty looked good at the end of the regular season, and into the postseason that makes him all of a sudden look better than he did before? Evol did the same thing in 2018 postseason, and got him that 4yr contract.

As we've been pointing out, Monty has been good the last 3 seasons.

Who said or implied “all of a sudden?”

Exactly. To many, your last 2-3 years tell more about what level player you are than career numbers. Monty has been almost equal to Bassett in almost all of the most meaningful categories except wins and losses.

What’s good to you obviously isn’t good to me, and of course there is just no disagreement on this. I have said his stats are good except his W-L, which I just put more stock in than all of you, and I don’t value him as high either. There is nothing wrong with either view, but there always has to be on here.

Of course the word “good” is subjective, but there are 150 SPers slotted into the 30 teams inMLB, at any given moment in the season.

There are higher categories than “good” to most people.

Of course, anyone ca. set up their categories as they wish, but I would think one would be in a small minority, to think someone in the top 12-15 out of 150+ SPers is not in the “good” category.

Even factoring wins and losses as a very important stat for a pitcher. I can’t see not thinking Monty is not a top 30 pitcher, at the very worst. If not being better than 4 out of 5 or more other pitchers us not “good,” then someone’s standards are set very highly.

4. His xFIP in '20 was 3.65.

His 3.78 xFIP since 2020 is just…

0.29 from Scherzer

0.18 from Nate

0.08 better than Verlander

0.11 better than ERod

0.19 better than Cease

0.23 better than Bassitt

Cease is a good pitcher, but that 2.20 ERA was like Kim Jong Il hitting 11 hole in one's... very lucky.

These are the numbers from 2020-2023, where several pitchers had one really good year.

Cease xFIP

3.78 in 21

3.50 in 22

4.08 in 23

23 looks a tiny bit more like the outlier.

Yeah that’s the point.

Montgomery is a good pitcher likely to be paid like a much better one due to his postseason performance. Just like Eovaldi after 2018.

If the bidding goes beyond 5yr/$100mill, I hope the Sox pass. That’s the ceiling I think they should set, and I don’t think it will be enough. Despite it probably already being an overpay…

Just got back from the club, and took a little Monty poll while I was there. 12-8 in favor of Monty being better than his W-L record shows. Also heard Sean McAdam on the radio who said he views him as a backend #2, or a front end #3. All kinds of different views out there.

I think we had already agreed on this.

If he signs in Boston for 5/100 and turns out to be just like Eovaldi -- wins a World Series every five years -- I think Sox fans would be ok with that.

Strange question to ask.

Weird that 8 people think he is actually worse than his W-L record.

I’d go $120M/5 but $110M is probably closer to what most might agree as tops.

Fair, although in don’t think this team is one Jordan Montgomery away from a title…

Nobody does.

It’s my hope he’s the second best pitcher we add.

It’s my guess he might end up better than the one we do get?

I might have worded that wrong. Not worse than his W-L, but what his W-L says, and more in line with my journeyman opinion. I didn’t actually think it would be that close, and I didn’t think that my opinion would be the majority either. Of course these aren’t all Red Sox fans either. A few Yankees, and O’s fans are mixed in.

Put it this way, after Yamamoto and Snell, Monty is clearly one of the best starters available.

Apparently he's only a #3. Sad!

MLB listed Monty #8 in FA 1 slot behind Sonny Gray, where CBS listed him #9 even behind ERod, and said Monty is a no thrills mid-rotation starter. I guess you don’t like those two rankings.

That CBS ranking also had Gray at 12, but Kevin Kiermaier at 11?!?!?

That’s All Star Kevin Kiermeier to you, pal!!

Looks like CBS projects him to get more money than E-Rod. Not sure how their order works.

He can't even pitch.

Meanwhile, Mad Dog Russo says stay away from Hader, because he refused to pitch the 8th inning of a big game in September. If only the posters who were never closers could invite him and Kimbrel and Papelbon to a thread to show stats that say there's no difference what inning they pitch or whether their teams are ahead, tied or behind.

They just need the right statistical state of mind. Or to schedule their nightly amphetamines one inning later (the players -- I'm talking about the players)...
