Luzardo - surplus value $63.3mill with three seasons of control remaining…

Mayer ($44.5), Perales ($3.5), and Mata ($2.3) is just as short at $50.3 mil as it looks in real life.

BTV accepts Mayer ($44.5), Teel ($17.8), and Luis Guerrero ($1.5) for a total of $63.8. It looks more realistic as well, but I have no idea if Miami accepts…

I would not add Teel.

They would probably not want Yorke.

Other BTV additions to my initial offer that bring it close to even would be:

Rafaela

Schreiber

Winckowski.

Or just offer:

Mayer

Houck or Crawford

Mata

Or

Mayer

Duran

for Luzardo and someone else, maybe Berti (can play 2B & OF)

And our rotation was mainly made up of projects already.

Our pattern has not changed, except maybe Giolito offers more hope than:

M Perez

Richards

Kluber

(Wacha & Hill did OK)

… but with the caveat that this team desperately needs infield help on defense…

I don’t disagree. I do think it will be somewhat better than 2023, if…

Story stays healthy

We add a decent defensive 2Bman (O would be nice)

Casas improves (not a sure thing)

Yes, definitely maybe.

I’m not sure we will spend the $37M or so we have left to stay under the tax line. Staying $5-9M under seems to be a common thing, lately, so maybe $30M might be what Brez still has to work with- emphasis on “might.”

That’s a lot of money, especially if we focus it on adding just 2 players. IMO, SP2 and 2B jump out as the highest need areas. A trade could fill one or allow us to fill 3 higher need slots.

I know tge rumours have us out of the Monty race and maybe Luke warm on Snell, but $37M might be enough to add Monty or Snell plus Chapman. Trade for Polanco or Drury might put us over.

Monty or Snell plus polanco or Drury certainly works.

Stroman or Imanaga

Chapman

Polanco or Drury would leave us under the tax line.

Trading Mayer and Teel for Luzardo? Nah. He’s a nice #2, not an ace.

I’d pass, too. But if I am Miami, I’m not trading Luzardo for Mayer and Perales. (Mata adds nothing.)

It will be interesting to see how Bello turns out this year, and with Frail it’s not a question of if, but when he’s on the IL. The rest are all up in the air, and can go either way, so projects pretty much sums things up.

I think it’s a little odd some view Giolito as a reclamation project but also view Wacha as a sure thing…

Miami has a rough farm system right now and needs a little of everything. Wonder if they’d rather a grab bag of 5 guys with good ceilings and an MLB starter (Wikelman, Perales, Yorke, Bleis and Crawford).

Gio has the higher ceiling. Wacha will undoubtedly see IL time. Wacha just had that nice early season stretch that some people popped boners over.

What’s a nice #2 these days, and what is a nice #1, or Ace?

Trending the past two years? At least those here who liked the Kluber acquisition a year ago -- there were a few -- tried to point out that Klubes was better at pitching in '22 than Wacha.

So sick of projects. Five years is like half a decade.

It's cool when they rebound and boost clubs into contention: Tiant, Wakefield... uh, that's all I got -- in over half a Red Sox century.

Eovaldi blossomed, got hurt again, and battled back in Boston to top the rotation into the stud that some of us knew he was; then the Sox let him go. Wacha and Paxton were good for fifth-place teams.

Bret Saberhagen, Greg Harris…

No boners here, but Wacha has had 2 decent seasons in a row, totalling 5.7 bWAR or 4.1 fWAR.

Wacha's price tag did take a hefty leap this year, though.

I’m with you on the project thing, but if we add a top pitcher, Gio is a good secondary get.

On Nate, I loved the guy, but he was not a horse. He only started over 23 games in one of the 4 seasons of that 4 year contract:

23/33

9/12

32/33

20/33

84/111 is75% of available starts.

16M is too much for him IMO.

I get Cole is an ace, but how many more aces are there really out there?

Just use the Bellhorn Ace Identification System.

If he's a slam dunk Hall of Famer or at least a strong candidate, and he's healthy, and he's been in good form recently, then he's an ace.

I see him as a solid 2 with a chance to become a #1.

He might be close to the best SPer with 3 or more years of control that is a realistic trade candidate.

Would you trade Duran and Mayer for Luzardi and Berti, then sigh Teoscar to play LF?

Easy to pick a Cy Young winner. Who is the lowest ranked ace?

Are we going to revisit the wide array viewpoints on who is an ace or #1?

If we sign a starter, we risk losing one of your top 13!

Maybe bres-slow is working on a trade. Houck or Crawford and Duran and Valdez is a nice start. Yorke and Mayer are fine additions!! Hello cease?? Or hello Cabrera????

Ps: what happened to the barracini guy?
