GM Brian O’Halloran has been offered a new senior leadership position within baseball operations — he will also handle day-to-day operations while the Red Sox search for new leadership.

Temp GM?

Congrats to mvp 78 for starting this unbelievably predictive thread. By the title I thought it was premature, but in fact it was right on target.

Will there be a similar thread on Alex Cora?

The same article says the search for a new baseball operating will be begin right away. So Brian is not the guy

Yes, he’s retaining his current position AS GM and taking over Blooms duties as interim director of baseball operations while they search for a new director of baseball operations.

Or whatever they want to call it

It's just temp until they find a replacement

The #RedSox went 267-262 during the Chaim Bloom era. Those 267 wins are 15th-most in the Majors during that span.

The David Stearn report came out. Theo was in town. Rumors were swirling. It was the perfect time to add the post. As I have said previously, it would have been dumb to go into next season with him as a lame duck and the best thing to do is let him go BEFORE the offseason, not wait until November if that's what they wanted to do.

No he's ALREADY the GM and he's going to REMAIN the GM.

No, seems like he was offered a new senior leadership position? My guess is the new CBO will name their GM or not have one? I think DD didn't have a GM under him for a while.

Kennedy -- 'We need to be competitive. We need to be playing for a postseason spot -- playing meaningful games in September and playing postseason baseball in October.'

'This is a really painful day for a lot of reasons -- especially on the personal side.'

Ok, people do realize that the Red Sox changed the role of the GM back when Dave Dombrowski took over?

Brian O'Hallaran was already the GM. He wasn't promoted to GM, and he's likely not going to get demoted and LOSE his position as GM.

What the GM does on many teams and here in the past when guys like Theo were GM has been handled by the "president of operations" or the "Chief Baseball Officer".

Brian is taking over, there's no rule 4 or 5 or even trades that can take place so it's not like he has a ton of franchise-altering work in front of him.

By the time the world series is over and the winter meetings have started the Sox will likely of hired CHaim's replacement and who knows what they will call that role but he will NOT be the G.M. unless fired it will remain Brian. I know this seems like a moot point, but these things matter.

A big part of me thinks that JH already knows who is coming in to replace Bloom.

I'm guessing that there might be a couple of our posters who are in mourning. Hope we hear from them soon.

Who?

I've seen a lot of pro-Chaim people on Twitter lamenting the firing, but I don't think you'll see it here. The idea that there was a contingent of pro-Bloom posters on here that didn't exist elsewhere was false. It's actually worse on other sites.

Kennedy -- 'We expected a team that would be in this thing. A postseason contender. And unfortunately, as we all know, we fell well short of that.'

'We are in the results business. Results, ultimately, always matter.'

I dont' f***ing know now. But he WAS the GM before Bloom was fired, and this seems like a temporary position. If he's not the GM under the new guy does he get promoted, demoted, or fired? I would imagine if he's being tasked to be the new Chief baseball officer that they're somewhat happy with the job he's done to entrust him there.

Theo Epstein is not a candidate to lead the Red Sox, says Sam Kennedy.

Did my name come up? What did Sam say about me?

@itsbrianbarrett

Bloom era

2020-2023

Pitching

4.59 ERA - 24th

1.39 WHIP - 26th

.258 OBA - 27th

651 Home Runs - 22nd

39.7% hard hit rate - 25th

317 meltdowns - 25th

Defense

-108 outs above average - 30th

335 Errors - 30th

And yet people like @redsoxstats are melting down over the firing.

There are two open roles, so you're way more likely to get it this time.

A couple is not an insinuation that there are many. I'm not promoting any idea about anything. I bet it actually is worse on other sites.

Our GMs leave for other organizations. DD did have Mike Hazen in that role, but he never replaced Hazen once the latter went to Arizona..,

There were posts, probably not by you, that claimed that we had a very pro-Bloom site and that our views were not consistent with the rest of Red Sox Nation.

GREAT NEWS. I just came in, and saw that ding dong Bloom is gone. I’m not going to say I told you so, but I was against his hiring from DAY 1. I had said many times over that the present time is the most important time, and not 2-3-4-5 years from now. He improved the farm rankings good for him, but the record of the BIG league club is most important. Same Kennedy, and Cora said it best. On Kennedy he said all of baseball ops failed last year, and by going by that have failed this year too. Cora said just recently that what the big league club does, or doesn’t do in October is most important, and that looks like another seat on the outside of the Postseason.

A GREAT DAY IN Boston today is.

I would like to submit my application to replace Bloom. What I will do to the 2024 team.

I will bring in two starting pitchers who are of ACE caliber.

I will make the defense up the middle and in the outfield better

I will keep the farm intact.

I will invest more money and resources in the scouting department. Both at the amateur level to draft better and be more successful at identifying pitchers, and also at the Milb and MLB level to better identify guys who can be fixed or who provide more of an opportunity to produce higher value than their market value will compared to the ability of other teams to do such.

I will invest heavily in the best dieticians, and strength and conditioning coaches at ALL Levels from the Florida complex leagues up to the MLB level. with the goal of improving total health outcomes, reducing injuries, and maximing athletic performance.

I will give weekly press conferences and take questions directly from the media with full transparency.

I'm saying again that I bet JH already has an idea about who might be coming in. this just doesn't seem like a spur of the moment move to me. Successful business executives have plans before they make the big decisions as a rule.
