The hardest thing for Bloom isn't going to be trading Paxton (if someone else breaks down and agrees to part with a Joe Ryan-type pitching prospect).

The hardest thing will be dealing one of his many middle infield prospects for Paxton's replacement. And then he'll also pick up Rich Hill for peanuts and crackerjack.

Fans will be outraged when Paxton is gone... but Jordan Montgomery plus a legitimate pitching prospect is better for now and next year than Paxton and one of the surplus middle infield prospects Bloom has been stockpiling for this moment.

Montgomery next year? He’s a two month rental…

Not if your CBO is planning on building now for the then - which has been reiterated in several forms of Bloomspeak. Would that possibly mean he'll acquire and actually pay another guy who is AL East battle-tested... and four years younger and healthier than Paxton?

Everyone on here realizes of course that Justin Turner is also just a rental

There are one-year contracts and there are two-month rentals.

Is Montgomery really that guy?

He’s 30, and he was good in the AL East (3.94 ERA / 3.90 FIP). But to me that depends on the deal. He’s going to be an overpay on the trade market as the #1 name on every trade candidate list, and he might be reluctant to extend.

I could see it happening, but I could also see it not working out per your plan. He’s not a bad choice, but I’m hoping the Sox aren’t relying on extensions that haven’t been negotiated yet…

Turner would be a rental for any acquiring team (of which there will be none). But he has two months left in Boston (plus any postseason)….

Article today said Sox aren't interested in trading Turner. But we know that actually means unless someone else has an interest in really interesting us...

As for the starting pitching market, Bloom can't deal Paxton unless he's reasonably replaced. The players deserve as much, especially the young core that is forming, going forward.

Bloom can be cutthroat, but not at the expense of alienating players he's grooming to be part of sustained contenders. No wants to die on that Rich Hill.

Turner has made a clear car he is finishing 2023 in Boston.

I could see Bloom dealing Paxton, but I’m not as sure about it as I was a couple weeks back. I do wonder what the Sox trade bait is. And I’m wondering if Verdugo has entered that picture.

With 1.3 years left and Rafaela destroying AAA pitching (albeit without ever taking a walk) and Dunn on board the rest of the year and currently thumping, does Verdugo fit in the picture? Or is he part of some depth that could be expendable?

My personal theory is Hill hated the treatment Cora gave him. But it’s not a theory I can dogpile with documented evidence…

Ok new crazy deadline plan

Boston deals Verdugo to a third team and receives RHP Paul Blackburn and LHH 2B/OF Tony Kemp from Oakland (possibly with a prospect from that third team). Third team candidates include Miami, Seattle and Cleveland.

That feels Bloomy

My brain hurts from thinking about all the options.

But overall I agree: 1) this is a good Sox team that will get better, especially when/if Story and Sale return as their better selves; 2) they have a good shot at the postseason; 3) and starting pitching should be what Bloom goes after and not--in Paxton's case--trade away.

Or Hang’em Chaim deals for another middle infielder because that feels very bloomy

I went with Kemp.

Other candidates IMO include Nicky Lopez (KC), Harold Castro (Colorado), Ildemaro Vargas (Washington) and Luis Guillorme (NY Mets). Guillorme is currently on the IL, so his likelihood is reduced (but not eliminated; Schwarber was on the IL when Bloom acquired him)….

I think everybody is in play! Even injured guys!

Hang’em Chaim seems to trade for low profile guys on the edges of team’s rosters

The Red Sox are 2.5 games away from a wildcard spot.

Why am I not surprised to hear the only news connected with the Red Sox is us selling players?

Watch Bloom outsmart himself and maneuver us outside of the playoffs in his quest to stockpile more prospects for the minors.

Don't look at our current performance, the future is bright, just give me a few more years to make this work!! Dude is a JOKE and his job should totally be at risk if we don't make the playoffs yet AGAIN!

Let's revisit on August 2.

I trust Bloom to make the wrong move. Who cares about being competitive now when you might be able to nab a future prospect or two who might pan out five years from now? Paxton is currently one of the stalwarts of our starting rotation with a 1.07 WHIP and 140 ERA+ so I fully expect him to be gone for a kid who never sees the big league roster by the time the trade deadline ends.

Nothing like making up a scenario and then holding Bloom accountable for it…

A lot of Bloom’s wrong moves turned out to be right.

I didn’t like turning down Graterol for Wong and Downs, but Wong has really filled a need.

I didn’t like protecting Ort over Ward, but so far, Ort has outpitched Ward.

Many drilled him for letting Wacha and Eovaldi go, but Wacha is on the IL since July 2, and Eovaldi went down with a forearm strain (which could be mild or could be his third Tommy John surgery).

I didn’t like not replacing Story, but Chang has turned out to be OK.

I didn’t like getting Mondesi. Ok that one has no real bright side, except Taylor hasn’t been any better…

Many questioned the aged pen duo, Turner, Duvall and Yoshida, too.

Montgomery to Rangers!

Montgomery and Stratton, a righty reliever having a decent year, for Texas' #11 and #14 prospects.

According to Fangraphs, the Red Sox' #11 and #14 are Bastardo and Paulino. If Bloom doesn't think those two are worth trading to upgrade for an actual wild card run, then might as well sell.

Chang has an OBP of 0.2. That's beyond terrible.

Yes because:

1. All prospects ranked 11 and 14 in each system are equal

2. Jordan Montgomery was sadly the only pitch available

3. The deadline passed far too long ago…

Are we going to be buyers or sellers or staying put the next day and half? We are 2.5 out of wild card, effectively in last place with Yankees. Our relief has cost us two games now in SF. No offense.
