Trading Verdugo is looking likely. Getting back a controlled starting pitcher is the questionable part. Presumably they'd have to throw in a good prospect or two for that return...

If only we had some decent shortstop prospects in the farm system, athletic enough to move to other positions.

Abreu is athletic enough to play RF.

Long term, the plan is probably Roman Anthony.

... once he returns from the IL.

Still, how many Edison Paulinos do we really need before he's redundant?

Paulino 21, 5'10, 155, '23 MiLB stats: .238, .717, 21 SBs.

Rafaela 22, 5'9, 165, '23 MiLB stats: .301, .830, 32 SBs.

Meidroth 22 5'9, 170, '23 MiLB stats: .285, .825, 11 SBs.

Bonaci 21, 5'10, 164, '23 MiLB stats: .305, .847, 6 SBs.

(notice how I didn't even mention other more highly-regarded middle infield prospects like Alcantara or Cespedes...)

Paulino is having a bad season and has massive splits. I'd put him in any trade.

We did pick up Reyes and Bernardino after opening day.

Bloom is going to make 2-3 trades. My guess is one sell (Duvall) and 2 buys (SP and MIF.)

Reyes is a replacement level player.

As another poster mentioned, the only deadline trade rumors involving the Sox are about Paxton, Duvall and now Verdugo...

If they are dealing, I'd hold onto Paxton, but deal Duvall and Verdugo. Verdugo could bring a good haul back since he has another year of control. I think there's nothing to the Verdugo rumors though. Paxton should be getting a QO at season's end.

As trade deadline approaches, Red Sox listening on Alex Verdugo (sources)

They should listen on all trade offers. I mentioned trading Verdugo last year and got similar pushback.

If it's a controlled starter, it'd be a bottom of the rotation one.

i get that (i played SS & P myself :D), but i thought the the point of drafting so many was to trade surplus for pitching. and we most definitely need pitching.

That’s one thought. Another is many will be moved.

And the third part is simple attrition; several of them will simply fail to advance at some point. If you want an MLB shortstop, you simply cannot draft just one and hope for the best…

I’m thinking a three team deal in which Boston gets Blackburn and Tony Kemp, Oakland gets some non-Boston prospects, and Verdugo goes to Seattle or Cleveland…

Consider it done! :)

Both?

So, Refsnyder moves to FT?

I assume Abreu or Rafaela is called up as the 4th OF'er?

Who plays RF?

Horrible.

If they are dealing Verdugo, they are done with this season. They could platoon Abreu/Refsnyder in RF. Duran in CF. Yoshida in LF.

BTV accepted these trades that all send more value to the other team:

Snell for Walter & Paulino

Stroman for Perales & Hickey

Verlander & $32M for Houck

Cease for Houck, Yorke & Rafaela

Flaherty for Mata & Jimenez

They may buy and sell, again.

I’d do the Snell and Flaherty deals.

Pass on the Verlander deal.

Cease isn’t getting moved and it’s looking less and less like Stroman is as well…

Yoshida in LF, Duran in CF, Duvall in RF. Refsnyder as the 4th OF. Abreu and Rafaela as ICE Depth…

Would have to overpay to bring a perceived high tier starter like Cease or Snell.

Why hold onto Duvall too? May as well deal him.

Because dealing Verdugo isn’t a season-ending strategy?

White Sox have said they’re not moving Cease. So any overpay would have to be impressive.

Snell? I expect the Jordan Montgomery deal type of return…

Blackburn

Laureano (listed as HIGH on BTV)

You can still trade Duvall in another deal.

How is bringing Tony Kemp back helping?

Bloom apparently feels there is a need for a LHH middle infielder, presumably to platoon at 2b with Arroyo. Among the definite selling teams, the most likely available LHH MI are Kemp, Luis Guillorme (Mets), Harold Castro (Rockies), and Ildemaro Vargas (Washington). Nicky Lopez was on my list but was since dealt to Atlanta.

If this is a real need/addition, Kemp is a definite candidate. But if I’m right about usage, Harold Castro (.286 vs RHP, highest among these candidates) is the better fit.

It’s a weak list, but Luis Guillorme is probably the actual best player…

It's not that I hate your idea, it's just that Verdugo's trade value is higher than what the Sox receive in the trade, even per BTV standards. They'd need to receive an additional arm or prospect for the trade to work out.

I am a Laureano fan. My only issues are

1. This doesn’t help with the OF logjam

2. The LHH MI need is still unfulfilled
