Following another last place finish in 2024?
Without being rude, I'm talking about the near future, not two years ago or the past. The farm is close. If things break right, this team could really turn the afterburners on in 2025.

Following another last place finish in 2024?

I don't know what Bloom will do with the rotation for 2024. If he adds Yamamoto to Bello, Whitlock, Houck and Sale it would be a fairly decent rotation. Still some injury risk though.

However, the offense would still be really strong and we could see Story shift to 2B and Mayer added at SS at some point. Abreu and Rafaela would be closer to add to the depth in the OF.

I think that's a much deeper roster than 2023. This year, there were no fall back plans in case of injury. Going forward, there should be an influx of young talent at the upper levels of the minors to fill in those holes.

The "last place Red Sox" would be 1st in the Central and 3rd in the West right now. I think their record would be a little better next season though. Uncertain to how much higher it would play out in the standings as the East is a really difficult division for all 5 teams.

Not what's being implied at all.

I think people just like getting mad at my posts rather than actually reading them.

As it stands the biggest contracts are:

Total dollars Trout 426.5 million

AAV (excluding deals of 3 years or less) Judge 40 million

If Ohtani does get 10/600 million, it will be an increase of about 40% in total value and 50% in AAV.

All those contracts are 1 way players, Ohtani is special. He can literally add the value of two guys, so he's going to get paid close to that.

And one injury would take out both players at the same time!

The names you listed reinforce how risky the big contracts are. Judge got $360 mill and has played 49 games. Turner got $300 mill and has an OPS of .687.

These are stats for the first half of this year. Judge has 19 homeruns in those 49 games. We dropped $300 million on Devers (who is not much of a team guy) and he only has one more HR than Judge in 87 games. Unload him and get Ohtani.

Exactly, people seem to only think of the upside with Ohtani and don't see the equally huge downside that could come with it.

We see how the Chris Sale contract has hurt us, imagine having two Chris Sales.

No one is saying Judge isn't a monster talent. But he has a significant injury history. Can't hit any homers from the IL.

Devers is not much of a team guy? Where does that come from?

Money-wise, it would be like 4 Chris Sales.

From a guy who doesn’t like Devers…

And only open up one roster spot for the replacement. Pitcher? Hitter? Which one do you replace?

Pitcher. You can fake the DH part.

This post gave me a headache.

Does hernandez have any value????

Someone would likely take him, if we paid his whole contract.

Don't expect anything much in return.

Watch for injuries between now and the 31st to see which contender might need an experienced infielder/outfielder/ RH PH. If that happens and a team needs that guy, don't be shocked if it's not Kike. If we traded him into the AL East mix , would it be a net gain or loss ?

Exactly.

Jorge Soler had a .658 OPS for the Royals when Atlanta acquired him for 23yo A ball reliever Kasey Kalich and then watched Jorge win World Series MVP.

Struggling doesn’t mean immovable…

I have had my moments of criticizing Devers, but never over his not being a "team guy." In fact, I don't even know what you could possibly mean by that.

As for the $300M, of course it's a gamble, but it's clear he can hit and his fielding isn't half bad--and he's 26 years old, which means the great majority of his contract will be when he is 35 or under. And so far he has not seemed to be injury-prone. I worry about his weight, but so far he seems to work at keeping it down.

While I have gone out of my way to defend Kike, I agree with your premise--that he could be traded away. He's a terrific athlete and very versatile, but he has stopped hitting. Plus he's best in the outfield, and the Sox have five outfielders--Yoshida, Duran, Duvall, Verdugo, and Refsnyder--who all hit a lot better than he does.

Interesting. You know far more than I, but I just don't see him going elsewhere with the Sox paying his entire salary--even though by July 31 they will have already paid 2/3 of it.

He will be owed about $3.5M. We can pay all that. I’m not expecting anything good in return, but call up Reyes.

BTV gives him a surplus value of $(-4)mill. Given the most likely destination is Miami, that gives him less trade value than Barnes.

He still may go, but the most beneficial return is an open 40 man roster spot…

Some team will want him at min salary.

They just won’t give us anything of value.
