Crawford vs Bibee, both righties

Bibee is a rookie, but has more starts (7 vs 3) than Crawford and a pretty good ERA (3.20). Four days ago Crawford went 3 IP with 1 ER, very likely to test the waters for a future start. Bibee went 5 with 3 ER six days ago and has not faced the Sox.

I give Cleveland the edge tonight because Crawford ain't no Paxton, who had to go 8 IP and 2 runs last night just to keep the Sox in the game. They/we rallied for 4 in the 8th, but then Martin gave 2 back in the 8th before Jansen pitched a clean 9th for the 1 run save.

I don't see that scenario repeating itself, but also admit I'm a terrible prognosticator.

Also this. I've read a ton of negativity on talksox lately--and contributed some myself. Nevertheless, I do think this team is better than last year's and a glance at the wild card race says that the Sox are just 6.5 games behind the Orioles, the top wild card team in the American League.

Given that the Sox still play 13 X 4 = 52 games against AL East teams and the AL East this year is the winningest Division in the history of MLB Divisions, getting a wild card berth is a worthy and attainable goal.

The negativity only reflects negative areas of a team that many fans would have liked to have seen a bit more upgraded since last year.

That really only includes the starting pitching and defense -- two main aspects usually required of a winning ballclub. The offense has been hot and cold, normal over a long season. Baserunning hasn't killed us as much. The bullpen is improved, but there's always a worry of breakdown from overuse. Hopefully, the depth being employed in different ways by management can prevent that.

Positives on a rebuilding team are watching the younger or newer players develop together. It's June and the team is still alive, and vets returning from injury can contribute to improvement.

moonslav provided a comprehensive laydown on usage of the bullpen and made a convincing case that the bullpen is not, repeat not, being overused. I also agree with moonslav that this year's bullpen is an improvement over last year's. I also think the rotation is better, but the injury to Sale is dismaying.

The hitting is definitely better than last year, but the defense is worse. And, frankly, I think the hitting is vastly more important than the defense.

Re. bullpen overusage -- I repeat, there's always a worry; it's early June. In the past, a rotation averaging less than 5 IP per start would spell doom by August, but maybe this year's bulk guys in those middle innings are being stretched out by design (or default).

Re. the importance of D: I might agree with you, except even Cora admits his pitchers don't have swing and miss stuff. Pitch-to-contact guys need support behind them. That may not appreciably improve until/if Mayer and Rafaela get here in a year or two.

Not that comprehensive. You just can’t go by innings pitched. Not every inning is the same. Example last night Martin pitched just 1 inning, but gave up 4 hits, and threw 25 pitches most of which was stressful. The eye test gives you a lot better comprehensive lay down than just pulling up some stats on a computer. Cora talked about how the BP had been used to much, the Globe talked about how the BP had been used to much, and they talked about it on the NESN pre, and post game, and the broadcast itself.

Angie Dickinson, who co-starred in the great western Rio Bravo in 1959, will be 92 this September.

Thought you were down on John Wayne…

Just back , driving in from Las Vegas and I notice that Crawford has some unearned runs against him. Then I see that the Sox have less errors than innings played, so there's that. At some point the defense reflects the degree of focus and anticipation by the fielders. Not sure how you overcome that.

Sort of like giving up 2 out RBI hits, in the form of back to back doubles

Watching Casa-Hernandez-Duran K back to back to back is just one of the treats Boston baseball delivers.

Chris Murphy was called up earlier after posting a 7.71ERA at WOO. The SOX farm is loaded.

7.71 at WooSox, but 0.00 in MLB. Baseball is an ironic game.

Based on history, the quickest way the SOX can get to a WS is with a 1st year manager.

Can we make that happen in 2024 ? it doesn't matter much to me but I think the team already exercised Cora's option for '24 , so it looks like 2025 is the next best shot.

One thing's for sure; I can't wait 86 years.

The Sox defense is a joke. Worse than Little League.

Unwatchable

Unlike the TV shills, the radio guys are not afraid to tell it like it is. They did not (and have not ) held back on criticizing the defense or anything else that needs critiquing.

It was as ugly an inning defensively as you would ever want to see.
