The highest ranked prospects that are Rule 5 eligible, according to the last soxprospects.com's ranking:

7. Perales- yes

8. Wikelman- yes

11. Bonaci- hell no

13. Drohan- yes

17. Castro- most likely no

20. Paulino- I'd say very likely a no.

31. Ryan Fernandez- no, but may be selected by some team

35. Scott- Borderline, but I'm guessing yes.

38. Gambrell- I'm saying yes. (I thin Soxprospects will jump him higher in their next rankings.)

45. Lugo- no

49. Penrod- borderline, but I'm guessing no.

50. Brock bell- no

52. Sogard- no

53. Zeferjajn- no

54. Cepeda- no

60. Song- no

I think someone will take drohan in the rule 5 draft

I'm not so sure. He sucked in AAA and has to stay on the ML roster, all year.

Hard to say. Ward was taken last year #1, but had a much longer history of success than Drohan. Drohan really only had 6 good AA starts before being promoted to AAA and sucking. I think he's 50/50 to be taken, but won't go top 5.

The staying on the ML roster isn't a big deal as they can just return him if he sucks. It just depends on which org has room for him. If I was OAK, I'd take like 4 Rule 5 guys since they aren't planning on competing anyway.

Yes, of course, and the 26 man roster on many bad teams have room to park a guy.

I think there are several better choices out there than Drohan.

A's have about 5 guys on their 40 man that could be droppable for a guy like Drohan IMO.

It's about the 26, too, although with the A's, not so much.

BTW, I thought we had 4-6 guys I'd drop to keep Drohan on the 40- NOT the 26!

I would have kept Drohan too? IDK. They have much more info on him than we do.

I'm not worried about losing Drohan. I had higher hopes for Ward and Song, and I wasn't too choked up losing them, either.

Let's see, if there is one GM who likes Drohan that much.

It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it just seems like a poor use of the 40 man roster.

If we end up adding 6-8 new players to the 40, the difference between drohan and the bottomg of the 40 man roster guy should be negligible.

If they add 6-8 GOOD players.

You don't have to be all that good to be a better bet than Drohan, but if some of those 6-8 are minor league signings, like an Alfaro type, then yes...

FanGraphs on the 40 man moves:

More interesting than what Boston did Tuesday is what they didn’t do. They arguably had the biggest roster crunch in baseball, with nearly a dozen potential additions and eight or so current 40-man occupants who I’d consider on the roster bubble. Young righties Luis Perales (whose fastball has monstrous vertical carry) and Wikelman Gonzalez (plus secondary stuff) are both young and raw enough to expect they’ll spend their first year on the 40-man entirely in the minors. Prospects Grant Gambrell, Ryan Fernandez, Angel Bastardo, Chih-Jung Liu, Shane Drohan, Juan Daniel Encarnacion, Eddinson Paulino, and Allan Castro all had interesting cases to be added versus not. The relief-only guys (Gambrell, Fernandez) are lower-impact types who were probably safe to leave unprotected, Drohan’s rough second half hurt his chances of being rostered, and most of the rest of the candidates are extremely young and unlikely to stick on someone else’s active roster next spring. Especially as more and more teams tend to err on the side of not adding players this time of year, more and more players fill the potential Rule 5 Draft pool and the chance any one of your team’s guys gets popped in the draft drops through the sheer volume of alternatives. Liu (sitting 95 mph with a plus breaking ball and average split as a starter) could be vulnerable in the Rule 5, especially if teams think his stuff will tick up in relief.

I’m going to predict Ryan Fernandez gets selected. And if my Rule 5 prediction history is used to assess this prediction, Fernandez is a lock to be passed over…

Yeah, I'm not worried about middle relievers with relatively low upside.

He might be the one guy we really regret not protecting.

Maybe? He really has no track record and hasn't pitched above A ball. I think Drohan is more likely to get picked than anyone else. If Penrod is selected, there's a better than 50% chance he's returned.

Monstrous vertical carry? Is that the same as the notorious "rising fastball"?

I meant in terms of which selectee has a better chance of becoming really good.

Maybe? Rule 5 picks rarely become really good though the Sox probably wish they still had Ryan Pressly.

...and the Yanks probably wish they protected Whitlock.

WOO’s pitching was bad the past few years because of talent, not coaching. The team should be a little bit better going forward.
