An embarrassing charade for sure. All their PR ******** just needs to stop. I don't want the front office to be an icky used car salesman. Just run a baseball team and shut the f*** up.

How could Kennedy, and Bloom sit there, and do the spin, and grin, and say how much Bogey meant to the team, and how bad they wanted him back, and that was all after that fake offer last offseason that pissed Bogey off. Did they really think fans were going to buy into that BS. Just like with Mookie when they offered him $300M when they knew he was not going to take it the Red Sox waited to the last minute, and put their best offer on the table when they knew there were better offers out there, and even then if the last reported offer was true around $170M that wasn’t that could an offer anyway.

These decisions are made by ownership - when it gets to this dollar value, it's an ownership call.

Now, on paper I would not have necessarily given Bogaerts an 11 year deal - but I do want to see what the outs look like and so on ...

I was thinking that, this morning. Is $400M/12 or 13 out of the question?

Well, he has to find a dance partner and didn't last year. If he is happy with a 2/70 deal and getting back into the waters again, maybe he does it again.

Talk about a big slap in the face the Red Sox spent more money on an unproven player from Japan than they offered Bogey last spring when the Red Sox wanted to add an extra year for $30M on to the $60M Bogey had left on his contract. $100M+ for an outsider who has never played ML baseball compared to all that Bogey had done in Boston. Those are just plain rotten apples Stinking to high heaven.

I'm not sure about top 15, even among just everyday players, excluding pitchers.

If you cherry pick the sample size (2015-2022) and figure in some players who were not around in 2015, 2016 or 2017, I'm not sure he's top 15.

fWAR 2015> (with PAs)

53 Trout 3964

48 Betts 4851

42 Lindor 4740

41 Arenado 4850

41 Altuve 4707

40 Goldschmidt 4998

40 J Ramirez 4433

39 Freeman 4752

38 Machado 5007

36 Judge 3161

34 Harper 4419

12. (34) Bogaerts 4745

13. (32) Donaldson 3976

15. T Turner 32 (3737)

16. Correa 31 (3813)

17. Springer 31 (4147)

19. Bregman 31 (3474)

26. Seager 26 (3373)

36. Soto 23 (2667)

48. Acuna 18 (2297)

51. Devers 18 (2958)

89. Y Alvarez 14 (1537)

94. Tatis 14 (1175)

He was top 15 in fWAR last season. He was top 15 when I ran fWAR for the past 5 seasons. He's probably top 15.

Apples to oranges.

So, can we look back and blame (since blaming is important on this site) the GM for not extending Betts, Bogey and Devers way before they neared free agency?

I get the argument about extending Bogey last winter or two or even early this season, but deals like Whitlock and the ones we see ATL, TBR and others handing out quite often.

1. Betts should have been signed to the LA contract here. Ownership f***ed up.

2. Bogey's initial contract should have been for slightly more $$$ and not had the opt out.

3. Devers should have been extended by now. It was already clear that his bat was going to play for a long time.

1.5 Ownership should not have been as grimly determined to make the "David Price salary dump featuring Mookie Betts"

The opt out might have been the only reason Bogey did the contract.

There has to be two sides to an agreement. Look at what players are getting, sometimes guys are just dead set on going to the market, and we as fans somehow think the team can always stop that.

If teams could do that, free agency would barely exist.

Around 15th among everyday players, yes.

I'm not trying to diss Bogey. I only complain about his D.

He's not worth what he got, but we should have locked him up earlier. Unlike Betts, he was willing to sign before free agency.

Yes, yes and yes.

Yes, Yes, and Yes! I don’t like opt outs, and look how JD held the Red Sox hostage for a few years. Bogey at the very least should have been given somewhere near their final offer to him this offseason last offseason.

That's the stuff that really pisses me off, but it goes back to long before these two guys. I really started noticing it after 2011 when they booted Tito and ran him over with a car on his way out. This ownership is filled with horrible people who think there s*** doesn't stink. John Henry and Tom Werner provided the money to win 4 rings, but have also provided an atmosphere that caused some real dogshit seasons.

Agree on all except for the Betts comment.

Hard agree.

That's why the Sox needed to pay him more so that he wouldn't have needed the opt out.

Yes, but we still had a window afterwards, too.

RESET!!!! Red Sox everywhere celebrating! Now, once we get rid of Devers, the gates will be wide open for exhibitionists, perpetrators of assault, and anyone, you know 'caught in the wrong place at the wrong time'.

I find myself agreeing with you more and more.

That scares the hell out of me!

LOL!

If the Astros were not winning so damn much, the same beefs could be hurled at them.

Opt outs only benefit the players. I never understand why fans like those clauses. They create the possibility for a hostage situation for the team without any upside for the team.

We did get one more year from a BorA$$ client, so it wasn't all that bad, but better options should have been chosen, including and extension 1-2 years ago or even earlier this season.

If we don't learn the lesson from Bogey, and lose Devers for just a comp pick, some serious head smacks need to be given- or worse.

I'm not even sure Bloom has a major role in that choice.

I don’t think Story is a good replacement for Bogey’s bat. We have the knew guy just signed (an unknown performer in MLB), Devers and Story as our top hitters. The rest of the offense is just not competitive. They need at least 2 more quality bats.

You're saying they shouldn't have traded Betts and should have kept him for 2020 even after the extension talks failed?

I don't like them either, but they're an incentive to get the player to sign.
