Why let Renfroe leave only to get Haniger in FA? Help it make sense.

It also doesn’t have to make sense. The Sox didn’t trade are Renfroe with the ideal they needed to sign Haniger in a year. It’s a consequence and not out of reason.

It's not a good FA class as we've all gone over!

The Sox may be shopping the trade market for an outfielder too.

Who is durable in this FA outfield class?

Maybe Gallo.

I still like the idea of trading with the Marlins for a top pitcher and Berti. We solve the leadoff slot in the lineup (although his OBP slipped from .388 from '19-'20 to .319 from '21-'22), the RF hole and the top of the rotation gaping hole.

I'm not sure we can do this without parting with Mayer, Casas or Blies. Maybe Rafaela, Yorke and Walter? (Perales?)

So far this offseason has been about as exciting as last offseason was, during the lockout.

Hey, Boyd just signed for $10M/1 with the Tigers!

The fun has just begun!

The Rays make a big splash, for them: they signed Zach Eflin for $40M/3.

$11M, $11M then $18M (likely the year they trade him.)

Cue someone to bash Bloom for "being asleep at the wheel."

That price was apparently worth it to two like-minded markets. Nightengale reports the Sox offered the exact same deal... except Eflin would have had to work in New England instead of his homestate of FLA.

Maybe it's just coincidence, but that's now two targets this week who also signed with contenders instead of Boston.

You think we get him for $1M more, or maybe even more money up front?

Personally, I hope we get better than him, but all this talk of Eflin, Heney and the like makes me feel like I did after we signed Perez, I, Perez II, Richards, Wacha and Hill- reaching for long shots.

Eflin's velo has tailed off since his big injury in 2021, but he's been good a limiting hard contact and doesn't give up a lot of bb's. He's probably a more reliable option going forward than Wacha. Maybe was just going to be a cheap replacement for Eovaldi?

I've been a strong advocate for the Sox signing two starting pitchers. I would have been ok with Eflin as the second guy.

Yeah, maybe we have to pay the S**tty Team Premium now.

Offering market value will only get us some more silver and bronze medals like the ones we now have for Abreu and Eflin...

I mean, Eflin literally picked the team closest to where he lives. I can't fault him for that. Even if they said "we'll give you an extra 1M" he may have passed. No reason to overpay, just find the next guy.

I agree. But I'm finding it a little disconcerting that we're getting these leaks about how "the Red Sox were in on him too". Like a message to the fans: "we're tryin' here, fellas"...

Eflin's the biggest free agent signing in Rays' history. If Tampa thinks that highly of him, he may be the sleeper acquisition of the winter. And if the pitching market is exploding, and if the Red Sox can't land a guy like that, they're not about to overpay $45 million or so for a deGrom.

Wonder if someone will give Eovaldi at least a similar contract. Eflin had injury concerns, as well, but Nate is better when healthy...

The Rays actually seem to be interested in spending a little money now. More bad news for Sox fans.

I get a funny feeling he'd have been the best of 2 signed, or worse, the only one.

I'd rather them not say anything. All the "oops, just missed" makes them look like buffoons.

Just find an Eflin-type from Massachusetts.

Paging Corey Kluber…

Only if you assume those stories come out of the Boston FO, whom I believe has some restrictions on what they can say about offers per the CBA. (Someone mentioned something about that on this forum.)

Agents can say anything to anyone…

Apparently, the story is that Eflin got the structure of the deal from the Boston and then shopped it directly to the Rays who said "yeah, we'll match it."

Well, at least we're being useful.

@alexspeier

Source confirms @chadjennings report: Red Sox thought they’d reached agreement with Zach Eflin on a 3-year, $40M deal, but the Orlando native shopped it to TB, who matched it and signed the RH starter

If the Sox hadn't confirmed the Abreu #1 interest story, maybe this would be less concerning?

They're just trying to keep us all in the loop!

I don’t think Boston is a preferred destination like it used to be, and I’ll say again that Boston will not outbid any other team for some one relevant.

So, not even another Story type signing, even with more money apparently available than last winter and arguably less slots to fill?

Sox just need to sell themselves better.

Sox can outbid any other team if they want to.
