We may go with Whitlock and Houck as "relief aces" with neither having the defined traditional closer role.

I know many here are doubtful on Schreiber repeating what he did, this year, but that guy has some nasty stuff. He has not done this with smoke and mirrors. Now, RP'ers are known for "losing it" and "regaining it," often, but I'm counting on him as a solid set-up man in 2023.

Barnes is winning back my respect as another solid or semi-solid set-up man for 2023.

The big staff question will be on moving Houck and or Whitlock to the rotation.

If he was healthy, he’d still be in the role.,.

Aside from a stretch in June, was he consistently in that role? It's been a hodgepodge of guys getting saves for the Sox this year: Schreiber, Strahm, Whitlock, Houck and they even experimented with Robles at one point.

He also got saves the first two days in August and then got hurt.

He had no saves in July, but the Sox only had 4 saves that month…

His last 3 games were 9th inning save situations, but right before that, he was used in the 8th, a lot.

Seemed like he was gradually moved into the traditional 9th inning closer role right before he got hurt.

A Qualifying Offer to Eovaldi makes some sense. There's a reasonable chance he accepts, coming off a down season.

Wacha could probably get a multi-year deal, so there's a good chance he would turn down a QO.

Gonna be interesting.

Turner would be great should Bogey prove to be impossible but that would mean commiting at least $25 mil for a significant period.

And turner would be worth every penny of it!

Rich Hill wants to pitch, next year, and says he'd like to return to the Sox.

I guess a few players weren't turned off by all the supposed clubhouse rancor.

Hard disagree.

Unless you think Eovaldi has another 2021 season left in him…

Hill is cheap and can pitch out of the pen so that's fine.

Eovaldi gets riskier and riskier as he gets older.

Wacha just has limited upside.

You offer a QO to either of them and they gobble it up.

No such thing as a bad one-year contract?

I disagree. If they are bringing Hill, Wacha and Eovaldi back again, they need to be prepared for long IL stints again. These guys do take up space on the 40 man. Are they also going to go with the Paxton/Sale experiment again?

I wasn't aware of a Paxton/Sale experiment. Paxton was a dice roll, that's all.

Supposed clubhouse rancor? Oh it was real, and all directed at Bloom, so I think the fact that hill wants to come back has all do do with playing in Boston despite his lack of trust, and feelings towards Bloom, and the same would go with Bogey, or anyone else.

It kind of baffles me how many people want to bring back the exact same team we just watch implode in 2022. Some would get less money, like JD, but giving a hefty raise to Wacha, which I would do, $1M more to Nate and a $6M raise to Bogey, plus a hefty arb raise to devers, means we likely don't re-set and have nothing left over to make additions in RF and the pen. Plus, as you point out, we will, once again, rely on much better health from a group of SP'ers that have very poor health histories.

I guess the rancor did not rise to the level of making Bogey and Hill not want to return, right?

My guess is JD and Wacha will soon say they want to return, too.

I don't think there's anyone saying bring back JD, Eovaldi, Wacha and Hill.

I'd like to bring back Eovaldi or Wacha, and that's it for me.

Expensive dice roll. Remind me to never let Bloom take my money to Atlantic City.

There was no rancor, nothing serious at least.

If they are going to bring back Wacha, Hill and Eovaldi, I think it says more about how horrible this offseason's batch of FA pitchers are.
