Cora just said on NESN last night (taped over the weekend): "Barnes in the 7th, Martin in the 8th, Jensen in the 9th."

Players are often DFA'd right before a trade is announced.

What do the departures of Matt Barnes and Josh Taylor mean for the Red Sox bullpen?

Two less choices in the pen, and Brasier and Ort live another day.

No one is trading for Barnes. The only reason to acquire an $8mill RP with an ERA over 6 is if you’re dumping salary. If you’re dumping salary, the players are already on the 40 man roster…

Barnes being DFA is kind of shocking.... Wow.

Not sure what’s more surprising - Barnes being DFAd or Ort not…

Exactly. Why can't that be a possibility?

Some team might take him in exchange for a $4-5M player, too.

Some GM might actually want him at close to face value.

I seriously doubt we just eat his contract, unless we just found out something new about his health.

They must have found a taker

Or they figured an $8mill RP was most likely to clear waivers.

Of course Barnes can refuse assignment and become a free agent. But that puts him on either a minor league deal or means some other team has to DFA someone to get him on the roster…

FWIW Baseball Trade Values assign Matt Barnes a negative trade value of $7.8 million:

https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/7632/

Perhaps the Red Sox can find a trade of bad contracts.

That number includes his having a value of $7.7M while being owed $15.5M, making a net of -$7.8M.

Why would we pay someone $15.5M, so they get $7.7M value from him, and we keep Ort on the roster?

He's going to be traded.

99.9% Yes!

If the Sox found a taker, they’d just trade Barnes and wouldn’t need to DFA him.

They might find a taker now that he’s on waivers, but it isn’t likely…

There was almost no return on that contract extension. Terrible extension and completely pointless to have done it mid season for a guy that had a history of fading in the second half.

The trick would be to find a player with negative trade value who would not require a slot on the 40-man roster. Does that player exist?

Maybe they just wanted to add Duvall, now and have a detail or two to work out on a deal.

I just can't believe they will pay someone else to have Barnes pitch for them and get nothing back, unless they just found out about a health concern or personal issue.

Cora just spoke ab out him being the 7th inning guy.

Why?

Swap a 40 man for a 40 man, and call it even.

Yes, it seems weird they don't just do the trade without waivers, but maybe the Duvall addition to the 40 couldn't wait.

What's the chance we do something like this...

trade Barnes and $5M for a non 40 man prospect.

We'd clear some space on the budget, improve the farm and open the roster slot for Duvall.

Best part: we get to keep Brasier and Ort!!!!

I think they figure him to be the most likely to clear waivers, due to his salary. Waivers aren’t always about releasing a player…

What does that accomplish? He rejects the minors and we pay him to play elsewhere.

The only logical thing that makes sense is Barnes is about to be involved in a trade. Keeping Ort and Brasier over him makes no sense.

If they had a trade worked out, they wouldn’t need to DFA him.

He might get traded now, but usually players that are traded on waivers go to teams who know they can’t make a claim. I don’t think any team that wants Barnes is worried about him getting claimed ahead of their turn.

I don’t get keeping Ort over Barnes. Or Brasier. Or Dalbec. Or Hamilton. Or Duran…

Maybe they think he will clear waivers (he will) and they can negotiate a minor league deal with him after he refuses assuignment…
