Absolutely some positive possibilities.

Mostly still having Betts. But I do believe that building around Betts and Bogaerts was going to be off the table. That’s my only point here…

The better bet was building around Betts and Raffy long term anyway.

Latest loose talk is about a blockbuster trade with the Giants. They get Devers, thinking we won't sign him, but who have they got that we would want? I presume young talent plus a proven MLer.

Checked their prospect list yesterday. Two of their top 5 are shortstops; those we don't need. Their top three pitchers -- Harrison #2, Whisenhunt #7, Crawford #8 -- are lefties. Outfielders are #3, 4 and 10: Matos, McCray, Brown. A catcher, Bailey, is #12 (Joey Bart, 25, is SF's starting catcher right now, with a career 38% K-rate).

Brandon Crawford, 35, is the obvious name on their big league roster who is probably available and can serve as a reasonable placeholder at short.

Not surprised about that chatter. Boston hasn’t paid him. San Fran, despite throwing around as much money as anyone, was having a frustrating off-season of being rebuffed even before the whole Correa episode.

This would not surprise (or please) me…

I think going for lower level prospects just because they aren't SS doesn't make sense. So what if the Sox have Mayer? Maybe Mayer doesn't work out? Maybe you move the Giants guy off position? Maybe you deal him to another team?

We didn't unload all of the $60 mill, of course. We were still on the hook for $16 mill of Price's salary.

So the net increase in AAV would have been $44 mill. Talent-wise we'd have Betts instead of Verdugo.

Yes. The big difference with this trade vs the other big Dodger trade was we spent the money saved by dumping Crawford and also losing the AGon & Beckett deals.

Sox sign Wil Myers to $7.5M/1 with bonuses to get to $9.5M and a mutual option in 2024.

@JeffPassan

Outfielder Wil Myers and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a one-year, $7.5 million contract, a source tells ESPN. The deal jumps to $9.5 million based on playing time or if he's traded. There's a mutual option for the 2024 season.

My eyes are worse than I thought.

Signing him would not have surprised me.

If you move him to SF, then include Doval in the package.

But not one for one.

I see. Doval has a very high trade value according to BTV.

I can excuse the weak-visioned forum poster confusing Reds and Red Sox. Not like he told us where Arson Judge signed…

When is the time frame up on trading Hosmer and Downs?

Prediction: neither gets traded. Downs to Worcester. Hosmer to free agency…

I'm think some team would want Downs and would grab him off waivers, if he's not traded, first.

Hosmer is gone. (I's have traded Dalbec.)

My eyes aren't what they used to be either.

@RedSox

INF Jeter Downs today was claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals.

A lot less exciting. I was hoping they were now cups of water with a beta in each one…

My son would have me arrested for animal cruelty.

Sox apparently has trade talks with the Marlins on Joey Wendel. (Seems the plan is to play Story at SS rather than acquire a short term SS and keep Story at 2B)

He's pretty good on D at 2B and 3B, and I guess he's viewed as a bounce back offensive choice.

We'd all prefer Andrus at short and Story at second, but Chaim never listens to us.

I wonder how much Andrus is looking for.

The issue with signing Andrus is likely he wants 2-3 or more years.

Wasn't Rojas talked about, at one point? I'd prefer him over Wendle, and why not get a SP'er from the Marlins, while we're at it.
