Partly true, but except for EO and Pivetta, which SOX starter do you have a lot of trust in?

So far the starters have been ok and help is on the way.

The bullpen stinks

Schrieber and Strahm have been excellent going into tonight so I give them a pass for now. Sawamura, not so much.

Should not be a shock that Strahm didn’t have it tonight. He hasn’t pitched since last Friday; that’s way too long between appearances for any short reliever.

I will believe Sale is on the team when I see him pitch,

The Red Sox will carefully, deliberately "stretch him out" and "ramp up" his bullpens -- flat ground, long toss, simulated innings, rehab starts -- and probably throw in one more set-back... just to make absolutely sure he joins the club after the series a month from now in Toronto, Canada that he personally chooses not to attend.

Good observation.

Also, Cora used Davis to pitch the 9th in the last Chicago game with a 16-7 lead, presumably just to get some work in.

Maybe it should have been Strahm in the Chicago game, and Davis last night.

These are the kind of questions that should be asked of the manager.

Edit: Strahm actually has the better WHIP and FIP.

But your point stands that he was idle too long.

My question is how does a team's best reliever not pitch in a week? I tried calling Cora about this but he has me on spam risk.

Yes, they are worth keeping around a while longer. Zero confidence in all the rest, except Houck, who is wasted piggy-backing.

You probably know better than I, but last year I thought one of the team's pitching strengths was having three, even four long relievers: Whitlock, Valdez, and even Houck and Richards. Plus Pivetta in the postseason.

Plus I thought Houck was a good choice to follow Hill in the middle game (Wed, May 25) @ the White Sox because to me that was always a very winnable game. I don't mind you saying that maybe Hill could have gone another inning, but the fact is that the Sox lost that one because the hitting disappeared and Devers made that error for one unearned run.

I do agree with the overall statement that the Sox need a closer. But I'm not as sure as you that Houck is that guy.

Moreover, last night's loss was the result of a total collapse by the bullpen--with Strahm the perfect example. Before last night he had gone 9 consecutive scoreless appearances (and 7.2 scoreless inning) going back to April 26. So what does he do but give up 5 hits and 4 runs (3 earned).

Here's a not very important thought. I cannot remember the last time the Sox played a night game that started @ 8:10 EDT and lasted 4 hours, followed by a plane trip, Chicago to Boston, to play the next night (last night) at 7:10. So maybe the bullpen was tired, pissed, or both because four out of four of them stunk.

If the hitters were able to hit after all that, the pitchers should have been able to pitch. They weren't.

Did I hear OB correctly that the bullpen has an 11 ERA?

They're bad, but they're not that bad.

Sox relievers had a 4.09 ERA going into today.

I'm not sure Houck is the guy either, but we've thrown everything else against the wall, and not only did nothing stick, it splattered all over the place.

Unless we make a trade, Houck is the best option to try next.
