Who gets fired first: Dombrowski or Bloom?

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker mentioned Tanner Scott, Dylan Floro and A.J. Puk as being "in the mix" for saves early on.

Floro and Matt Barnes were the apparent favorites going into the spring, but Floro struggled early before rebounding of late and Barnes hasn't impressed at all.

No kidding? What a surprise! It seemed like a great idea to me that the Marlins were trying to hand over the closing role directly to Barnes.

Barnes 2023: 6.1 Innings, 7 BB, 7 K, 2.05 WHIP and a ST career high of 126 pitches (hadn't thrown even half that since 2018 ST). He must have been absolutely laboring through every outing.

Usually the guy who spends more money has the shorter leash…

I think as of this moment Bloom is definitely on a shorter leash than DD. Bloom is in his 4th year and has finished last twice. Henry is not noted for patience, although hiring Bloom was a move that called for it.

DD went to the 6th game of the WS last year, and his owner seems to be a free spender. They look like a match made in heaven, frankly.

There are many pitchers that come back from long layoffs (Whitlock) and thrive. Why would this not be the case for Noah Song was just frozen in carbonite for the Navy? Sure, he's suffering from hibernation sickness. As long as Song doesn't fall into the sarlacc pit, which would certainly end his pitching career, he should be able to stick on the active roster for 90 parsecs.

There’s a big difference between a guy who never stepped away from the game rehabbing and injury and someone who hasn’t pitched in 4 years. Wait! Can’t piss of Red, and forget about his 17 innings in 2019z

If anything, his injury is proof of this, or at least may be. Phillie rushed him, he’s missed several years of not just developing his pitches but ramping his innings up. Whitlock had 205 innings to Songs 17 19 or whatever it is? Plus he never stepped away from pitching coaches and MLB trainers. They’re not the same.

A 3 year hiatus is a 3 year hiatus.

But anyway, those who stayed cool about Song sure look to be right. It was that damn Peter Abraham and my own innate Sox-related superstitious nature that made me fear leaving him unprotected in favor of Ort was a dreadful blunder.

no no no, you can't compare him to Ort. There has literally never been a situation like Song before the odds of him having a mlb career were astronomically low. They still might be.

I wish I could say something like "people like him never get protected" but I can't because the truth is there has never been a situation just like this before. Peter Abraham backtracked a lot of his comments too by the way for what it's worth, his opinion isn't worth much in my book.

I would critique your statement. "leaving WARD unprotected in favor of ORT" was a major blunder.

The kid has still yet to pitch more than 20 innings in pro ball, above A ball. We are getting hung up over scouting reports that are 4 years old. The odds of him being the same game are slim.

I still hope we get Song back, even if there's only a 10% chance he becomes a major league starter. A chance is a chance.

But how? how can he become a starter? he pitched 17 innings in 2019. It's going to take years to build his arm strength up to handle a starter's load. His being allowed to pitch this year caused Philly to rush him because he had to play in the majors this year and it led to injury practically on day 1. His path to the majors is likely in a bullpen now. Maybe he will be a late-in-life starter like Rich Hill.

His Injury actually helps Philly keep him, which is dumb, it almost incentives throwing a guy out there in a capacity to injure himself if it's even a real injury. The Sox should file a grievance here.

How could anyone prove he isn't injured? It makes perfect sense that a guy who hasn't pitched in that long would strain his back trying to throw with velocity again.

Yeah, which is why you wouldn't rush him back like that, but they were forced to because he had to pitch on the 26 man this year.

It's pretty hard to prove an injury depending on what we are talking about. But there are MRI's, X-rays, Cat Scans, etc etc etc. I'm not sure what happens with HIPPA when a grievance is filed, but I don't think it's that hard to prove if Philly is exaggerating the injury. Which, is probably not happening. I don't think it's sinister on Phillys part, just stupid.

And it’s not exactly shocking he got injured.

Not to mention, if Dombrowski is trying to pull something off here, this would literally be the dumbest way to do it. Song’s biggest problem is the lack of pitching; burying him on the injured list is not a remedy for that.

All of this lamenting for a guy who hasn’t pitched in years is weird. We don’t even know of he’s any good any more. Jay Groome was at least pitching when he got dealt and no one seems to miss him one bit…

Now I'm curious as to whether there is any history of teams filing grievances about faked injuries. My guess would be no team wants to do it because every team uses the Phantom IL from time to time.

We don't know he can't be good, either. He's still young and healthy and he obviously has the genetic makeup to be able to throw a baseball. As I keep saying, it's a case we've never seen before.

Yes I’m sure the Phillies were trying to injure him! WOW!

By that logic Ort is a good prospect, he hits 100. He could be one tweak away from being the next Andrew Miller.

Apparently you missed my comment where I said "this is probably not happening"

Exactly! He didn’t forget how to pitch, and to me the question is how long will it take him to get back in pitching shape. Someone will find out whether it be Philly, Boston, or another team.

I think he had his chance in Boston, so now it’s someone else’s turn.

*sigh* why do I even try.

The thing I hate about this conversation is it forces me to be negative about Song, I hope the kid becomes an MLB starting pitcher. But this notion that he should have been protected when his picking was pretty unprecedented is just absurd. Also, linking him with Ort is just stupid....If there is an argument to be made here it is keeping Ort over WARD. At this point, a guy like WARD has a higher chance of having a good productive MLB career. He was literally the VERY FIRST guy picked in the MLB rule 5 draft.

Losing WARD, and protecting Ort/Braiser seems really dumb at this point. I don't think you could ever say that about Song, even if he becomes good. It's just a weird, unprecedented, unlikely situation. If I had a genie lamp, I'd literally use one of my three wishes to end this conversation forever.

That's fair, and he very well may end up turning into something, or not. But you can only carry guys like him for so long.

Throwing in the high 90’s doesn’t make everyone good.

No it doesn't. But you can't teach a guy to throw 99, 100 MPH. You can teach him to command it better. That can be the difference between a 5.00 ERA and being a shut down closer.

This is why teams take flyers on arms in the bullpen every year. Every team does it. Some times a guy develops and sometimes they don't. That's baseball.....it's a hard sporrt.

Posted
That's the problem with Ort, poor command. If he had good command his fastball would play up well. High 90's with good movement. Of course, as Red said that doesn't make you good, if you don't know where it's going.
