This is all an educational experience for me.

All I'm really getting at is that if the Red Sox might be hoping to get Song back from the Phillies rather than make a trade for him.

They might be. They also might not really care. I’m not sure if anyone in the front office has ever seen him pitch. And no one really knows where 3 years of not pitching would place him on their pitching prospect hierarchy.

Ward looks to be the bigger loss. Jury is still out on Politi…

The Six could also trade a low level prospect to get Song back, if the really want him.

Hard to know.

I’ve never heard of a team trading to re-acquire a player selected in the Rule 5 draft.

It's too early to make a judgment on any of them, I would think.

To put him on the 26 man roster? The only way the Sox get him back is if he's put through waivers and every other team has the chance to Rule 5 "pick" him again.

So that's the answer to the question I've been asking.

Of course most teams already passed on him once, likely because of his prolonged hiatus…

Or, wait until a team claims and trade with that team.

I’m only looking for hypotheticals. I’m not saying it will or should happen.

Since he hasn't pitched in a game this spring, he would probably clear waivers again. It's one thing if he could actively help a team. It's another if you're going to fight an IL stint all year. Sox should probably put up a fight once the season starts.

I don't think the Sox CAN trade with that team unless they are going to put him on the active roster. I'm not sure they can even do that without subjecting him to waivers. Typically, if there is a trade, it's the Sox trading the Rule 5 rights TO the Phillies so that the Phillies can get Song into their minors.

Once he is claimed off waivers, isn’t the need to be on the 40 lifted?

Song admitted in a ST interview he is not ready to be a pitcher yet, much less a big leaguer. He wants to be, but right now can't even find comfort in the grips of various pitches.

That doesn't sound like a guy that any team, even a cellar-dweller, can afford to carry on its MLB roster even for one day.

It would be a first if the Sox did that, but I don’t think the 26 man roster provision is enforceable if he were theoretically traded to Boston. If Boston - and only Boston - trades for Song, I would think that ends his Rule 5 status.

That said, Boston is far more likely to trade him away to Philly than to trade for him this year…

I can see that.

So back to what I said the day he was selected - Philly will either complete a trade for him or return him…

No. His Rule 5 status follows him to any claiming team. Boston doesn’t need to put in a claim at all, since if he clears, he is returned to their minor league system…

No. The team that claims him off waivers gets the Rule 5 restrictions as well.

I was told he'd be in great physical shape because of his age and that his arm would be well rested!

Unless they refuse to take him back, which has happened from what I saw when reviewing Rule 5 transactions.

Ahhh. Good to know.

And don't forget the rigors of military discipline that guarantees to turn boys into men. No doubt Song is rock and his arm is ready to roll. He just forgot how.

For now.

Sounds to me like the guy is a little too honest!

Maybe it's just too obvious when people observe his bullpens?

In some respects whoever said that was probably right; Song could probably out-push-up everyone in MLB. The problem is that doesn’t necessarily translate to throwing 100+ pitches with control and command…

Oh, you think he just forgot how to pitch over the past 3 years?

There are many pitchers that come back from long layoffs (Whitlock) and thrive. Why would this not be the case for Noah Song was just frozen in carbonite for the Navy? Sure, he's suffering from hibernation sickness. As long as Song doesn't fall into the sarlacc pit, which would certainly end his pitching career, he should be able to stick on the active roster for 90 parsecs.

Are you saying he should be just as sharp as he was 3 years ago? And he might be in great shape physically - a fairly safe assumption. But that doesn’t mean he can go out and pitch a game without wearing down.

A parsec is a unit of distance, not time…
