Kiley McDaniel posted his farm system rankings. Sox 16, Yanks 7

And Law has the Yankees at 22.

These rankings are all over the place.

These evaluations seem very objective. No rose-colored glasses.

LOL!

All-in-all, I think soxprospects.com does a pretty good job tampering down their optimism.

(I'm assuming you were being sarcastic.)

No, I was serious. They project German as a middle reliever at best. Adding that he could have an uptick.

Some might argue that's pretty rosy for a #52 in a 20th ranked team's system.

So you're suggesting they might as well not even bother with reports after reaching a certain number...

No, but I can see how what they wrote might be on the rosy side of the scale.

I happen to think German does have some promise, and they did use the word "might," so maybe it is fairly accurate.

In all honesty, what are the chances German becomes a serviceable RP'er in the bigs?

I don't know, but the fact he can get it up to 99 would seem to indicate he has a chance.

I get that, but if our #52 prospect has a good chance to make an impact, then our farm is better and deeper than anyone seems to think.

(BTW, a lot of guys who can throw 99 never sniff MLB, but I, too, share your optimism on FG.)

The minors are loaded with guys who throw 99mph nowhere near the strike zone…

Sure, but saying he has the ceiling of a middle reliever doesn't seem like outright puffery, IMHO...

1. Puffery?

2. They are essentially saying he is a fringe major leaguer.

I thought you'd like puffery. I was in the Arts program with an English Lit major before I turned to accounting.

Ouch... imagine being described as having the potential to be below-average: teacher who ignores facts, changes test scores, only calls on pets; favorite of bored members, future mediocreintendent.

This guy was rated above the "puffered" Frank German,

I loved Frank German as a Yankee prospect. Thing is, people keep trying him as a starter. He’s proven he’s not a starter. Give him a chance as a reliever. His FB Change combo can be deadly in short burst a la Tommy Kahnle

Hey my assessment of Howlett was always “career minor leaguer”…

Ceiling of an MLB bench bat sounds about right. Dude has natural power, but not much else.

Probably. And he probably never reaches that ceiling. How many players currently in the Sox farm system will even get a full year of service time?

It's not like it's a cathedral ceiling, either... more like one in the tunnel of a mine shaft

Ceiling of 25. Probably 15-16.

Higher than I would have guessed. Some will have the talent but just never stay healthy enough to accrue a full year.

I was thinking 12-15 tops…

The churn and burn on relief arms is high enough that I think guys like Chris Murphy will get service time no matter what. Maybe not a full year in one season, but could get there over multiple seasons.

May number may be a little inflated...
