The churn and burn on relief arms is high enough that I think guys like Chris Murphy will get service time no matter what. Maybe not a full year in one season, but could get there over multiple seasons.

May number may be a little inflated...

It might be that high, and it helps that I didn’t specify that anyone get that full season in Boston (which was intentional)…

I went through the previous SoxProspects rankings and it seemed like about 10 out of the top 20 for each year would get a year of service time at least. Would 5 over the next 40 spots get there? IDK.

@SoxProspects

In an Instagram post, outfielder Tate Matheny has announced his retirement.

The Red Sox 2015 4th-round pick, he spent most of last season with AAA Worcester after beginning the year in AA Portland. He is the son of former MLB catcher and current Royals manager Mike Matheny.

I didn’t feel like doing that review.

I also suspect if pressed to name the 15, few would get more than 10 right. It’s a very unpredictable field…

Does soxprospects.com even have an archive of the previous #21-60 rankings?

It would be hard to do that sort of research without it.

Any rankings of players after #20 is basically just dart throwing anyway.

Agreed, but it would be interesting to know how many #21-60's have made it to the bigs in any meaningful way.

The draft history on soxprospects.com is probably the best method, but it doesn’t cover any international free agent signings…

#48 Durbin Feltman: https://soxprospects.com/players/feltman-durbin.htm

Potential up-and-down relief type. Ceiling of a middle reliever. Unlikely to develop into a late-inning option unless the raw stuff he showed in 2018 returns. Both fastball and slider show at least average potential and his curveball has developed into a nice complementary pitch to give hitters another look. Fastball command will be key to development, as well as whether he gets comfortable throwing it up in the zone given renewed emphasis on that in today's MLB.

#47 Freili Encarnacion: https://soxprospects.com/players/encarnacion-freili.htm

High baseball IQ and makeup. Potential leader. Well-liked by his teammates. The organization believes he has potential to develop into a middle-of-the-order bat. Defensive projections remain to be seen. Wide range of possible outcomes.

Updated scouting reports...

#41 Jacob Wallace: https://soxprospects.com/players/wallace-jacob.htm

Potential middle reliever. Ceiling of a late-inning reliever. True relief profile with the potential for a standout fastball/slider combination. Has potential for two plus pitches, and his unique delivery gives hitters a very different look on the mound. Command and control need refinement in order to reach his potential. Very intense on the mound, always competes.

#42 Cameron Cannon: https://soxprospects.com/players/cannon-cameron.htm

Potential minor league depth player. Ceiling of an emergency up-and-down player. Bat will have to carry him; does not project to add significant value defensively. Needs to improve defensively and refine plate approach. Has not shown the potential at the plate the Red Sox envisioned when they drafted him. If he can show the upside offensively he did coming out of college, projection could change. May add other positions as he moves up the ladder, but currently looks best suited for second base.

#43 Niko Kavadas: https://soxprospects.com/players/kavadas-niko.htm

Intriguing hitter with a power-over-hit profile right now. Value is solely tied up in bat. Will have to hit at all levels to overcome defense and speed deficiencies.

#44 Eduardo Vaughn: https://soxprospects.com/players/vaughan-eduardo.htm

High-ceiling, low-floor profile. Wide variance between what he is and what he could be. Shows loud tools already and has the size, athleticism and projection teams look for in a prospect.

#45 Luis Perales: https://soxprospects.com/players/perales-luis.htm

High-ceiling, low-floor arm. Wide-range of potential outcomes, but has shown among the best raw stuff of any teenage arm in the system. Needs to get on the mound after having lost 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic and 2021 to injury. If he gets healthy and shows the type of stuff he has in workouts, could fly up the system’s prospect rankings.

#46 Fraymi de Leon: https://soxprospects.com/players/deleon-fraymi.htm

High baseball IQ with solid athleticism. The organization loves his potential to stick at shortstop. Offensive upside will depend on ability to add strength. Wide range of possible outcomes.

Maybe the farm will be the only baseball we see, this summer.

#40 Eduardo Lopez: https://soxprospects.com/players/lopez-eduardo.htm

Potential organizational outfielder. Low floor; has a chance to develop into at least an MLB reserve. Needs to stay healthy to make up for lost time in 2020 and 2021, which has created a wide variance in his future outcomes. Has a good feel for the game for his age [19], solid overall instincts, and a high baseball IQ.

#39 Chih-Jung Liu: https://soxprospects.com/players/liu-chih-jung.htm

Potential up-and-down swingman type with the chance to develop into a depth starter. Ceiling of a back-end starting pitcher. Still has a wide range of outcomes, as his stuff and arsenal are constantly evolving with each new look. In the 2020 Fall Instructional League, his velocity was down and none of his pitches projected as better than average. In 2021, velocity started to tick back up and secondaries showed more potential, but his velocity was still down from where he was reportedly at before he signed. Has the potential for three at-least-average pitches, but his frame is fairly slight to handle the rigors of starting long-term and he has not yet shown consistency with stuff from outing-to-outing and year-to-year.

Updated Scouting Report...

#11 Wilkelman Gonzalez: https://www.soxprospects.com/players/gonzalez-wilkelman.htm

Great arm with a wide range of potential outcomes. Ceiling of a solid mid-rotation starter, but size and delivery could push him to the bullpen potentially. Great arm strength with a lot of development remaining. Fastball and changeup show the most potential right now. Breaking balls and command and control need work. Still learning how to pitch, but is not as raw as some comparable arms age-wise in the system.

He turns 20 in the end of March.

#37 Bradley Blalock: https://www.soxprospects.com/players/blalock-bradley.htm

Potential up-and-down swingman type. Ceiling of a back-end starter. Shows confidence and pitches with some swagger on the mound. Velocity has already ticked up and could continue to do so. Development of secondary pitches and command will be key for him to reach his potential. There is a question of whether his delivery will play in the rotation given it has some effort. Likely will rely on his fastball/slider combination at higher levels unless he makes improvements with his other pitches. Those two pitches could play in a bullpen role if development necessities a move.

Turned 21 last Christmas.

#36 Shane Drohan: https://www.soxprospects.com/players/drohan-shane.htm

Potential emergency swingman type. Ceiling of a back-end starter. Athletic left-hander who will show a three-pitch mix, but needs to develop physically and add velocity. Has more upside remaining than a typical college draftee. Has the type of athleticism you look for in a pitcher. Has shown a general feel for pitching and a repeatable delivery. Fastball command needs improvement and he needs to continue to refine his secondaries.

Turned 23 in January.

#35 Jeremy Wu-Yelland: https://soxprospects.com/players/wuyelland-jeremy.htm

Potential middle reliever. Ceiling of a late-inning reliever. Fastball/slider combination could make him a very effective reliever, especially if stuff plays up in short bursts, but success will likely be determined by how his command and control develop. Has shown ability to miss bats with both of his primary pitches, but walk rate must come down. Fits the profile of a typical Red Sox target with arm strength and high spin rates on his breaking ball. Will be given the chance to start, but will need to show significant development with third pitch as well as command/control in order to have a chance to remain in that role. Bullpen remains an intriguing fallback option given how his velocity may play up in short outings.

He turns 23 in June.

Freddy Valdez, Jhostynxon Garcia and more...

http://news.soxprospects.com/2022/03/scouting-report-updates-freddy-valdez.html

Freddy Valdez:

Wide range of possible outcomes, with future upside tied into how his hit tool develops. Power-over-hit profile right now, but has the potential for his power to be a carrying tool. Needs to improve his contact skills in order to tap into his power potential. Good low minors flier with some upside. (Turned 20 in December)

@jcmccaffrey

Alex Cora is here at minor league camp. Said he’s been impressed with the shape Mayer and Yorke are in. Has been keeping an eye on lefty Chris Murphy.

Interesting note about Murphy in that he has an ok chance to see MLB games this year.

Minor league position players don't need to report until Thursday. Marcelo Mayer got here two weeks ago. He said today he's excited to get his spring underway.

Added 12 lbs this offseason too.

Thad Ward (TJS surgery last season) is currently throwing a bullpen. Will be interesting to see him and Mata this year.

#34 Victor Santos: https://soxprospects.com/players/santos-victor.htm

Potential emergency depth starter. Ceiling of a sixth starter/long-man. High floor/low ceiling. Potential for two at-least average secondary pitches. Lack of fastball potential limits ceiling. Has solid feel for pitching and an advanced command profile. Will throw strikes, but lacks put-away stuff.

Turns 22 in July.

#33 Enderso Lira: https://soxprospects.com/players/lira-enderso.htm

High-variance catching prospect with considerable upside. Has all the tools you look for in a catching prospect of his age, but is a long way from actualizing them. Lot of development remaining. Present value is all about projecting what happens in the future as he physically matures.

Turns 19 in October.

#31 Christian Koss: https://soxprospects.com/players/koss-christian.htm

Potential utility infielder. Hit tool development will be key to reaching his potential. If he can make enough contact against more advanced pitching, has the chance to be a borderline second-division shortstop. Has a high floor due to his defensive tools and versatility. Needs to show offensive tools in a less hitter-friendly, more age-appropriate environment.

He turned 24 in January.

#32 Eduard Bazardo: https://soxprospects.com/players/bazardo-eduard.htm

Projects as a middle reliever with the ceiling of a late-inning bullpen arm. Drastically improved velocity at 2020 Fall Instructional League changed his projection, forcing the Red Sox to add him to the 40-man roster and putting him on the bullpen depth chart. Potential for plus-to-better fastball and breaking ball with jerky, deceptive delivery could play in high-leverage innings. Needs to improve fastball command and improve consistency with his breaking ball in order to reach his ceiling.[/i

He turns 27 in September.
