Missing a whole season would likely affect some players more thaan others, but it's hard to know if that was a major reason for his early and mid season struggles.

I think it has to be a possibility, right?

It's a possibility, but I think it's also an indicator that you can't compare his trajectory to Xander and Raffy. I think he stays in WOO all of 2022.

@ChrisCotillo

Red Sox have re-signed some minor-league free agents. RHP Zack Kelly, RHP Caleb Simpson and RHP Michael Gettys back in the fold, I’m told.

Gettys, a former OF and Padres 2nd round pick, will continue pitching after tossing 5 innings in rookie ball this year.

Most likely.

I'm not sure why Bogey and Raffy were even being mentioned, here.

So, can Zack Kelly still be picked in Rule 5?

Because "Downs could play in BOS in 2022 because Xander and Devers advanced quickly as 20 year olds."

Think he still gets to play OF?

@SPChrisHatfield

Gettys has spent 8 years as an outfielder and is now transitioning to a completely different skillset, so his whole focus needs to be on learning that in the near term.

If he is able to make it work and gets to the majors? Who knows, but then you've got the opposite issue.

So, any 20 year old can or should be compared to Raffy and Bogey?

I guess. All I was saying is that it's hard to compare Downs' progress to guys like Raffy and Bogey.

Is it more likely that Downs in 2022 has a 888 OPS like in 2019 in A ball or a 606 OPS like 2021 in AAA?

In regards to Ward and the Rule 5 draft:

FYI, Ward, if selected, would spend 2022 on the IL, and would need to spend 90 days on the selecting team's active roster in 2023.

The 60 day IL stint in 2022 would burn an option year too.

Fans do that with any player. “Players A and b were up at 20.” Or “ That other team promoted their prospects. Why don’t the Sox?”

Because it’s not all equal everywhere!!

We often have most positional slots filled more than most teams, and our pitching prospects have not been good enough to be promoted by even age 22.

We don't draft first, and we don't usually have great young prospects. When we do, like Bogey & Raffy, they get fast-tracked.

This whole discussion began when one poster mused that Downs could get called up next July if he was hitting .370 for the WooSox and the BooSox needed a second baseman. Sometimes, minor leaguers figure something out and move fast. That's how Duran made the majors -- he started launching balls at a launching pad and couldn't be ignored... (even if some fans do ignore him, after one blah month in Boston... but he only played two minor league seasons before last year).

If you want to go younger, Mookie Betts hit zero home runs with a .658 OPS in the minors at age 19. He wasn't on anybody's list as a top prospect. The next year he busted out with a .966 OPS, and by age 21 was in The Show.

The mariners just added 3 guys to their 36 out of 40 man roster.

Others to follow, soon.

I believe the deadline is tomorrow at 5pm Eastern.

I read that time in some article, this morning, but I can't find it, now. I think it said Noon ET.

I looked and couldn't find it. Surprising that they'd put a 9AM Pacific deadline when they have a decent amount of West Coast teams.

That was my post. And I’m context, I only said Downs would be promoted over non-40 man player Ryan Fitzgerald. It had nothing to do with Bogaerts and Devers…

“It became clear as it unfolded that the market was going to take him to a point that we didn’t feel was the best use of our resources,” Bloom said. “We were certainly fighting our emotions on that the whole way because of how highly we think of him and how much we enjoyed having him here.

I think I was more right than some of you who didn't blink an eye offering a guy $10M raise.

Bloom probably knew there was a market out there for E Rod, and Bloom was not going to match that.

He made sure we got a compensatory pick.

Right - the QO was a no brainer. I think the Red Sox would have been very happy with Rodriguez coming back for 1/18.6M. I think the 4th year is where the deal started to get too rich and the 5th year was just the cherry on the sundae. Good on Rodriguez though - I think that deal is perfectly reasonable for both sides. I was a little curious whether Rodriguez would bet on himself or not - but given his health issues, 5 years of life changing money is really enticing.
