I have yet to see a list of who are the most likeliest Rule 5 draftees.

Maybe Feltman has the best chance of making someone's first round list.

I doubt anyone else gets picked, but several baseball people projected us protecting Santos, Cottam and Jimenez.

Outside shots might be ML ready Ort, Fitzgerald or German.

Ward might be picked as a wait a year player, as he recovers from TJS.

soxprospects, com wrote this before the protection announcement:

Certain to be protected, certain to be selected if unprotected: RHP Brayan Bello, SS/2B Jeter Downs, RHP Josh Winckowski

Near-certain to be protected, certain to be selected if unprotected: RHP Kutter Crawford

Likely to be protected, may be selected if unprotected: RHP Thaddeus Ward

May be protected, may be selected: RHP Durbin Feltman, RHP Frank German, IF/OF Ryan Fitzgerald, RHP Victor Santos

Unlikely to be protected, small chance to be selected, unlikely to stick category: OF Gilberto Jimenez, IF/OF Ceddanne Rafaela, RHP Chase Shugart

Unlikely to be protected, small chance to be selected, depth arms category: RHP Zack Kelly, RHP Kaleb Ort, RHP AJ Politi

Unlikely to be protected or selected, but of note: 1B/OF Pedro Castellanos, 1B/OF Franchy Cordero, C Kole Cottam, LHP Rio Gomez, 1B/OF Devlin Granberg, RHP Joan Martinez

To not protect Thad Ward is f***ing Stupid ! f***ing horrrrrrible decision

He'll be 25 in a few days, just had TJS, and barely pitched at AA (8 IP).

He has 165 IP in 3 seasons.

4.0 BB/9

The 10.6 K/9 is decent.

1.252 WHIP is not that bad.

3.54 ERA is good.

He may or may not be selected, but he won't pitch again until he's almost 26.

It may turn out to be a bad choice, but Ward would have to be pretty damn good for it to be F'ing horrrrrrrrible and stupid.

It sure would suck, if he went on the become Jalen Beeks or Ty Buttrey.

Giants Re-Sign DeSclafini

$12M x 3

The Giants are also said to be close to signing Alex Wood to $10+M x 2.

That's two pretty good pitchers for under $23M a year.

Angels Sign Aaron Loup

$7.5M x 2 with option for $7.5M with $2M buy out

Essentially, $17M/2.

Doesn't look like salaries are going down.

DeSclafini might have been an option for the Sox- sort of near the value of Steve Matz, so there's one option gone.

Bloom has been severely restricted in spending. He had$40M to spend last winter and 10 slots to fill. Vent your anger at Henry- the best owner the Sox have ever had- if you feel the need to bash someone, which is obviously who you are and what you enjoy doing the most.

As for the “cancel mob” it’s guys like you that prove without a doubt that some really do need to be cancelled.

I’m sorry. I didn’t realise you were a trained scout.

Your thoughtful analysis has been proven correct all year long. How could I have forgotten?

I’ve seen many players live that have great or awful games at those moments. I know better than to judge them over such a small Sampling.

You need help, dude. Seriously. If a Sox chat borax cause so much anger and spite, do a self check. I honestly mean that in good faith.

And like before, when you end up getting banned again, it won't be because I reported you.

You call my criticism of your position an attack?

I said things like “be serious” about something you later said was a joke. I called a position you hold “absurd” and you think those are “attacks?” Oh,the horror!

Look at your posts, dude! Those are personal attacks. It sure sounds like you want me cancelled a lot more than I do you. I’d have put you on ignore long ago after all the hatred and vitriol you have spewed, but I didn’t.

You need help.

Enjoy the holidays, if you are able.

TalkSox did a pretty good job projecting the 40 man selections.

If a team selects Ward, he'll burn an option year in 2022. Then he'll have to stay on the active roster for 90 days. At that point, you'd burn another option year to send him down to AA/AAA. His first full year of being off training wheels would be 2024 and he'd only have one option to go. He's on the older side and would be low on options. Would make more sense for a team to wait a year before trying to acquire him.

If Jimenez is a SB threat at the big league level, he’s gonna get taken. A bad team can stash him as a 4th OFer and if he’s fast, make use of him.

Feltman May get selected, relievers with upper level stats usually do get picked

Jimenez's defense regressed this year. His speed also ticked down a notch. He's a switch hitter with two vastly different swings. He's slappy from the left side, which doesn't play well in higher leagues. He has a cleaner swing from the right side, but just can't hit lefties.

Feltman could be selected, but I'm not sure it's a big loss for the team. If they thought he had a chance to be on the opening day roster, they would have put him on the 40 man.

Posted
I think Feltman will be taken.

Jimenez & Santos are under 50-50 being taken- maybe even under a 10 to 20% chance.

I think Santos is more likely to be selected than Feltman since he still has starter upside.

I really doubt Jimenez gets selected. If he didn't take a step backwards this year, it'd be more likely.

Jimenez is very very fast, but is not a good base stealer.

Any team selecting him to Buttrey him on the bench as a pinch runner would be doing his career a great disservice. Not to say some dumb team won’t…

Run: Plus-plus speed. As he has filled out, speed has decreased a grade. Will run 3.95-4.05-second times to first from the left side and 4.12-4.15 seconds from the right side. In the past, speed graded an 80, timed at under 3.9 seconds to first from the left side. Even with a slight speed downgrade, he will put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses. Always looks to take the extra base. Very aggressive. Baserunning instincts, reads, and jumps need improvement. Stolen base numbers are not representative of his true speed.

Why?

Also, if you really cared about this player, you'd know that he doesn't like "Thad" and wants to be "Thaddeus" going forward.

I should have said stayed near the same. I was thinking about the lock-out and if the owners win again.

He's a good player and it's not a knock on him to keep him off the 40 man.

Posted

Summation: Ceiling of a back-end starter if his development continues on an upward trajectory. Should at least be able to pitch in a long relief role, and could perhaps even fit in the back of a bullpen.

I think some fans overstate the importance of Ward's sub 2 ERA in low A. He's not a future ace. If they really lose out on a #5 starter, it's not really a big enough deal to impact a team like the Sox. More important to have an open 40 man spot you can actually use this season.

Posted

It actually would have been very stupid to protect Thad Ward. That would mean the Sox has TWO 40 man roster spots dedicated to pitchers who were going to be out for nearly the entire season and who couldn’t be placed on the 60 day IL without it accruing their service time and bringing them closer to free agency and arbitration…

Ward is a guy who only started 7 games in college. It was the Sox that pushed him to the rotation. His stuff played up against lower competition. It remains to be seen if he can compete at higher levels.
