Going into spring training I don't really think there's ever a set 5. You have a few guys you know will start and most teams have competition for the back end of the rotation. Hill/Whitlock/Wacha are all going to be competing for that 5th spot, and the way things work out you need more than 5 starters anyways.

I think the Sox want Whitlock to be the guy but they're building depth. Injuries happen, guys regress, so you can never have enough pitching.

Agreed. Let's assume Wacha, Hill and Whitlock all look good and close to the same in ST'ing. Which two would you guess fill the 4-5 slots?

Wacha and Hill.

Whitlock is a known (and extremely effective) commodity in the bullpen. Not broken. Don’t fix…

At the risk of sounding like we're a posse, I agree.

I do think Whitlock can be a good starter, but we know he does very well in the long relief role, and that role is becoming more and more prominent in today's game.

FWIW Roster Resource currently lists Garrett Whitlock as the Red Sox closer with a six-man rotation of Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta, Rich Hill, Michael Wacha and Tanner Houck:

Sox prospects has the same. They label Whitlock and Houck as "rotation/long relief." (5 other starters are slotted.)

IMO, you guys are more like the Cartwrights than a true posse.

Maybe some sort of insane clown posse, with all lowercase letters to avoid confusion?

Translation - no one knows.

Soxprospects still lists Kyle Schwarber as the LF acquisition. Sure it could happen, but there are other alternatives…

It's not happening with Schwarber. We need a RH'd bat, unless we do trade JBJ.

I saw ICP live in Portland, ME.

Great comic relief.

We had Schwarber last year and he was left-handed then…

We had Renfroe- not JBJ, as well.

Bloom has said he's looking for a RH'd bat.

Well, for LF the premier RHH are Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, and Jorge Soler. Soler and Castellanos are horrific fielders. And Bryant wants the moon and he wants it gift-wrapped.

Bloom might scrape the bottom of the barrel for Andrew McCutchen or Tommy Pham…

If Bloom did not go large for a SP'er, I doubt he does for a LF'er.

I think he looks for a platoon type OF'er- maybe via trade. (JBJ & cash for Beni? LOL)

You're in the posse, Florida Man.

Well I do say Hoss Cartwright, ye just actin' like a bull done kicked you in the head a'gin.

FWIW Bradley’s value matches up with Wil Myers at -12.8 on BTV. If San Diego included former Bloom acquisition RHRP Emilio Pagan (BTV value:0), it might make more sense…

I'd do it, but why would SD?

Mookie Betts is also like -65 on BTV. Of course, you're not allowed to trade him there.

I have doubts KC would want Bradley, given they have the reigning Gold Glove CF in Michael Taylor.

If the Sox plan to let Bradley play CF, they have a LHH option in Duran for LF, and could platoon him there with 35yo free agent Andrew McCutchen (.969 OPS vs LHP last year). And if Duran struggles, maybe McCutchen gets a bit more PT.

There are other guys like Jordan Luplow and Darin Ruf who also crush LHP, but neither is FA right now...

Considering the cash he is owed, is that value really unreasonable? Or the fact that he cannot be included in trades?

Why not?

They're the one team whose GM is less predictable than ours...

True nuff.

The rumours of Myers being traded go back years.

Would the Dodgers take Connor Seabold for Mookie Betts?

They must! It's a massive overpay for the Sox!

Here's the billion-dollar answer to both the leftfielder and righty bat question -- warning: this only happens if owners agree to eliminate the competitive-balance tax altogether from the new CBA...

... the Red Sox' new leftfielder will be Xander Bogaerts, who will be extended, along with Raffy Devers, to reflect salaries commensurate with the new shortstop, Carlos Correa.

(sorry, the posts about launching Bauer into outer space were so exciting that I punched myself in the head in the throws of passion)

They might if they just wanted to dump lots and lots of salary, right?
