Ward is an easy one for a s***** team. Select him, 60 day IL him then activate the rehab window when he is ready. It’ll give the selecting team 30 days to see if he’s any good while also guiding his rehab.

It actually would have been very stupid to protect Thad Ward. That would mean the Sox has TWO 40 man roster spots dedicated to pitchers who were going to be out for nearly the entire season and who couldn’t be placed on the 60 day IL without it accruing their service time and bringing them closer to free agency and arbitration…

Who? Never heard of the guy.

He's a good player and it's not a knock on him to keep him off the 40 man.

I certainly see the value in protecting him. It's not an absurd position to hold.

I think the Sox felt the odds of him being taken or taken and not returned were high enough to gamble.

I do think Ward has higher upside than Beeks and Buttrey, but there's also a decent chance he never even reaches their level or even makes the bigs.

If you're a s***** team, you probably have some better selections earlier in the draft than Thaddeus.

With Beeks and Buttrey, both could be out of baseball by the time they are 30.

Why would you assume salaries would go down?

The owners' initial efforts to substantially reduce the tax threshold did seem a hint that it was 'cry poor' time.

If not sooner.

I think Beeks tries to come back from his injury and even if the results are ugly he'll go through the motions for a few years.

Buttrey just dropping out of life with ball in hand was just weird to me. Can't believe he left so much money on the table.

And they just keep signing these mega deals. At some point, the grift becomes just too obvious.

"We need someone to save us from ourselves!"

60 day IL means starting his service time clock and doesn’t count towards the full year Ward needs to spend on a roster to be kept. So, coupled with the year necessary to keep him on the roster means a selecting team gets one minimum wage year before arbitration hits once they decide he’s a keeper. (For two years in total)

Teams would be better off finding healthy unprotected arms rather than trying to invest two years in Ward to see if he is worthwhile

There will be healthy guys in the Rule V draft with a similar profile to Ward. I can see why someone would take him, but it's a waste of a roster spot this year. If you really like the guy, just trade for him after the draft and you won't need to put him on the 40 man this year.

Nov. 23: Matz is weighing offers from each of the Giants, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, Cubs, Cardinals, Angels and Mets, Heyman tweets. The Giants’ offer remains on the table even after re-signing DeSclafani.

Matz apparently wants to sign by Thanksgiving.

What are the chances the Sox outbid all these teams? Even if they did it’s a step down from E Rod.

I'd say they have a 1 in 8 shot.

Why stop at first selection. This is a slam dunk for a team with zero pitching. He can be stashed on yourt 60 day IL as soon as February

He can be stashed, but you still burn an option year AND have to pay him MLB minimum for doing so. Is a team that is poor really going to want to pay MLB salary to a guy who is drafted for Rule V and placed on IL?

Sonny Gray and john Means on the block. Word is an A's starter or two are as well. I'm sure there are more.

Let's see if the Sox acquire a starter by trade.

Posted
You mean the White Sox. They sign players for more than two years.

We will, too.

BTW, we did sign Sawamura to a 2 year deal with a 3rd year team option. Big money, too!!!!

Tension is building and expectations running high as we approach the culmination of the Steve Matz Lottery!!

You heard it here first! Soon we will know the decision! Soon we will know what team has won the right to proudly display this extremely mediocre and replaceable pitcher!!

We're all hoping it will not be the Sox, right?

I'm afraid, if we miss out on him, will we do worse?

We’d already be doing worse with Matz, so more worse it could get.

The Red Sox would be remiss if they didn't keep all options open in talks to do due diligence and go all in touching base with targets they're linked to by reportedly showing interest in active conversations at this time.

And making aggressive offers that fall short of the highest bid.
