Ha ha! I.e., "it doesn't exist." So the RS win 10 in a row. You would say "they have momentum." Then they lose; you say, "they lost momentum." If it has no predictive value, then it's meaningless. There was no "momentum"; there was a series of wins, then losses. To prove 'momentum,' you really need to do a mathematical study to discover whether a team that has won 2/3/4/5 or however many in a row has a chance of winning the next one that is greater than that same team's winning% after winning fewer than that in a row or after a loss. I assume this has been done: it's not a difficult mathematical problem. But I need to see the results of that before I believe this. It's like announcers in a close football game exclaiming "Wow! The constant momentum shifts in this game are amazing!"

The studies have been done, probably most of them on the effect of 'momentum' going into the postseason. One thing you mentioned in your other post about saying things like "I just can't miss!" after the fact is what I've been talking about. Momentum is a descriptor of what has already happened. You can use it to describe what a team has done after the fact. Trying to use it to predict what will happen in the next game or even in the next inning is virtually useless.

The Texas Rangers, 2-16 in their last 18 road games, have tied the game in the 9th. Ibañez ground-rule double drives in 2 runs and chases Matt Barnes. Sox are 2-4 against the Rangers this season. Rangers are 37 games under .500 overall.

So about that SOX PLAY AN EASIER SCHEDULE DOWN THE STRETCH thing...

If ever a team had momentum, it's the Yankees right now. If I was a serious better I would absolutely be putting money on them every game now. I was even thinking of starting a thread with a poll guessing the Yankees record the rest of the way, but I wouldn't feel quite right about it. But let's keep an eye on it, for the sake of the momentum argument. I think they could play 650 ball the rest of the way.

It's a pigpile for the second Wild Card spot.

We're closer to the Yanks for WC1 than SEA and TOR are to us, unless you believe in all that Yankee momentum gibberish.

I do believe in it right now.

All the preseason pundits are finally feeling justified right about now. They just knew NY would acquire two big lefty sticks at the deadline to anchor the heart of the order, and get hot with Odor hitting .213 and playing third, a rookie playing shortstop, and their top two relievers unreliable due to injuries and rule changes. There's no stopping those pinstripes.

There is a Yankees forum on here you can add this to.

They have a bunch of things going right. Judge and Stanton are both healthy at once and producing. Montgomery and Taillon have been solid for quite a while. And so on.

They underperformed for 3 months. Eventually talent wins out. Lemahieu is killing it since the ASB. Rizzo and Gallo have added balance. Judge, Stanton have been healthy and steady. Voit came off the IL like a thunderbolt. Pitching depth has been really good both starting and relieving. Defense got better. They also started to run. Prior to the ASB, they were last in SB’s. Since the ASB, they’re first

The Yankees certainly have momentum. They may play well the rest of the way out because they have a good team. That said, after winning 10 in a row, their chances of winning today's game is not increased by any amount over what it would be if you didn't consider the record of the previous 10 games at all.

We might be just one glorious big come from behind win away from going on a long winning stretch, and I’m not talking about just vs crappy teams.

Did last night's win give the team the spark, or dare I say 'momentum', to go on a serious run?

Do we believe in players only meetings?

The best meetings are the ones we don't find out about.

Earl Weaver said team meetings are a bad idea because if you have a meeting and then lose again you're really screwed...

I happen to believe in team momentum.

I do think a big spark like the win, yesterday, can give a team the added energy, confidence and focus needed to have a better chance the next game.

Twins are on the struggle bus now too. Sox need to put the Twins down.

I don't care, if every game is a one run win. Not looking ahead, but we need to sweep.

What we need to see more out of the meat of the order and a stabilization of our BP. Without those happening our likelihood of gaining on the Yankees and Rays is low. Can we beat out Oakland? That's the only realistic hope but we need more from Martinez and Bogie.

Without a bullpen, this is a team that could still win a few games in the regular season. Anything can happen in a one game Wild Card. Once they get into the playoffs, they'd get smoked though.

I guess the more likely competition for the 2nd WC spot is the Mariners at this point.
