Maybe they do, but Cora answers with an unprintable profanity-laced tirade....

Or it's just too erotic for our puritanical tastes.

Exactly. The Arizona Fall League, for example, has a season maybe 25-30 games long. Yet it gets made such a big deal of..

Duran did get to play some actual games, though.

Let's not wait to do something to rectify problems until we have a losing record! We have gotten off to an unexpectedly good start. Let's continue to improve. Sending Codero down sounds best for him and the team at this point. At the same time, go down to 13 pitchers and bring up another bat. I know you favor 14 pitchers but we have a problem that needs to be addressed by adding offensive flexibility.

I agree with the idea of continuing to improve. I also agree that it's probably a good idea to send Cordero down to let him work on things in AAA. At the same time, I don't think it's a good idea to make decisions based on small sample sizes. It's a fine line sometimes.

As far as adding an extra bench player, if there were someone we could call up who would be a fair improvement over what we have, and who doesn't need everyday at bats, I'd be a little more inclined to agree with it.

Not bragging about it, but I hardly ever question the manager. I don't think I've questioned Cora once.

You are very good about that Bell. Very level headed. :)

I definitely have, but I also usually acknowledge that his knowledge of any situation is obviously far deeper than any superficial questions I have...

Same.

We are fast approaching the 1/5th point of the season.

The Yanks have taken over 2nd place. We knew they'd not go away gently.

We're up 2.5 and have the second best record in the AL (1/2 behind OAK.)

Our offense looks solid, despite being top heavy.

Our rotation looks solid, and we haven't even gotten to Sale & Houck.

Our pen has been our savior and is well rested due to carrying 9 pen arms.

Our defense is bad, despite our team UZR/150 not being bad.

We have several slots in our line-up with horrificly low OPS numbers, but newsflash: so do almost all teams- even the best ones.

We are on pace for 97 wins- the Yanks for 84, but we all know that will not be the final outcome.

@redsoxstats

First 19 games

10-60, 2 2B, HR, 2 barrels

Last 3 games

6-12, 2B, 2 HR, 3 barrels

If Renfroe can turn the corner, it would really fix some of the nonsense at the bottom of the order.

Vaz might be waking up the echoes a bit, too.

Sorry, what's a "barrel"?

Put the barrel of the bat to the ball for a dinger.

You know what a dinger is, right?

Home run? Because in both those stat blocks he has 1 less HR than barrel, so I'm confused what it means still.

It's basically a measure of how hard the ball is hit.

To be Barreled, a batted ball requires an exit velocity of at least 98 mph. At that speed, balls struck with a launch angle between 26-30 degrees always garner Barreled classification. For every mph over 98, the range of launch angles expands.

A barrel is not necessarily a dinger.

Wouldn't even need the term if it was, right?

There are several terms for a HR.

So, barrels can be hard it outs or doubles or even a scorched single?

Renfroe has only put the barrel to the ball 5 times, all year?

Now, I'm confused.

@SoxNotes

The Red Sox lead the AL in runs scored (149). They lead the majors in AVG (.265) and OPS (.776).

Xander Bogaerts leads the majors in hits (39).

J.D. Martinez leads the majors in RBI (27).

Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta, and Eduardo Rodriguez are tied for the AL lead in wins (4).

It's about how hard the ball is hit. You can barrel a ball right at CF and get an out.

And you can double on a well placed blooper...

Ok, but a well placed blooper is not considered a "barreled ball."

Exactly. Which is part of why “barrels” and “extra base hits” do not always have an obvious relationship...

Right. A barrel has nothing to do with the outcome. It's just a measure of how hard the ball is being hit. Launch angle plays a little factor in it as well.

Cordero could barrel his next 10 AB's and still not get a hit.

I'm not sure why launch angle should count towards "barrel," but I guess I learn something evryday.

Hopefully Barnes can take over the AL lead in saves too.

Because exit velocity combined with launch angle, on average, results in more hits than exit velocity without launch angle. Presumably the latter includes a lot of ground ball outs.

Ballplayers had a name for it before the nerds: atom balls.

I thought it was just called "hitting it on the screws."

They should just have gone with screws/screw %/screws above average/total screws for the year.

The screws term originated from golf though, referring to the screws in the face of wooden clubs.

Barrels is fine. The word screws has a lot of meanings, some too delicate for a family-oriented forum such as this. Nobody talks about barrels any more, except when discussing the price of oil...
