The Red Sox as a team last year had only 524 IP. So 250 IP is approximately one half of their season total...

Uh huh.

JD in a Boston uniform:

357 games

.304 BA

.946 OPS

88 HR

274 RBI

Hard to believe anyone would want to unload him, right? Then again. when Big Papi had his rough stretch there were plenty trying to retire him...

If you are unloading him, it's not to win now.

This team gets Chris Sale back in late 2021 hopefully, and then should have him back for 2022.

If Sale is mostly back to form, he fills the biggest need on this roster. So why unload Martinez to create another need?

DH is an easy hole to fill.

At the deadline, maybe. Depends where we are.

If he keeps hitting like this, we'll be in the race or his trade value will be higher.

You're still itching to unload him.

Might as well throw Manny in there as a DH too, because he wasn't a good fielder. Could have easily replaced him too, right?

Yeah, come to think of it, that Ortiz guy didn't really do anything special.

JD Martinez is not David Ortiz.

I want the most competitive team starting in 2022 but more importantly 2023 and beyond.

I love having JD on the team, but if we are out of it at the deadline, and he's doing well, he's worth way more to a competing team than to us. That's the bottom line and usually a good reason to explore a trade.

I'd like to see how much the team pays of his contract and what we might get back in return before I agree or disagree with the deal, but overall, yes, almost like Price, I think his contract is bloated.

I think we have a shot at winning, this year, if we stay healthy and nearly everything goes right, so I'm not for trading him at this instant.

Yeah, there's a big difference between an OPS+ of 148 and an OPS+ of 147.

JD is closer to Greg Luzinski than David Ortiz. He's basically Danny Tartabull.

Ortiz: 140 WRC+

JD: 135 WRC+

Tartabull: 133 WRC+

Luzinski: 131 WRC+

Plus, JD will never be here as long as Ortiz was or be as marketable as Ortiz was.

Can't compare the two.

Also, let's not let the people off the hook who said JD HAS NO TRADE VALUE. YOU COULD ONLY TRADE HIM FOR CHRIS DAVIS!

Those people were clearly more down on JD than moon or me.

That pretty much shows the 2020 season of 60 games should not really be held against someone like JD.

Exactly. Besides the randomness of the relatively small sample, we had all of those other COVID related factors to consider last season as well.

The randomness of baseball helps to show just how good the 2018 Red Sox team really was. 108 wins in the regular season. 11 - 3 in the post season against three really good opponents. It doesn't get much better than that.

It was an amazing season, no doubt about that.

In terms of talent, the team was great. I would argue, however, that they were also aided by a good amount of good luck. That is not to take anything away from that team, but to point out that every team that wins the World Series is helped by a fair amount of good luck.

Another clean outing by Rule 5 Whitlock. 2 IP, 3 K, 0 H, 0 BB.

He's going to be my favorite pitcher

Because we got him from the Yankees for almost nothing...something like $25K...

And we'll have six years of team control. He will start for us at some point this year. Book it.

Obviously, it's a very small sample, but you can't help but be excited about this guy.

What a great pick up for the Sox if he ends up being really good.

We are not trading JD. We will need him for our playoff run this year, not to mention next year.

Are we certain the Sox did not try to move him but found no takers?

Ortiz is a Red Sox icon. It's hard to compare anyone to him.

That said, I think you're being a little harsh on JD.

No, we are not. But I'm certain that they are not making moves based off of poor performances over short samples.

If the Sox were trying to move JD, I feel confident that it was for reasons other than the way JD performed last season.

The Tampa Way was more about moving players when other teams might actually still want them. JD's 2020 performance and his contract did not exactly put him atop anyone else's wish list...

It's been mentioned, but I think our pitching staff deserves a shout out for their performances so far. That is both the starting pitchers and the relievers. I'm not expecting them to be world beaters, but if they can just keep the team in the game, the team should be able to win the majority of those games.

We could easily be 6-1 based off of our pitching.

A pleasant surprise to date.

I was never down on you or moon, but I was certainly worried about JD; not so much because of '20, but all through Spring Training he was still flailing and missing breaking stuff off the plate. But in the past week he's been ripping fastballs down the middle and taking outside pitches the other way.

JD was the guy I thought of as the biggest key to this year's line-up, and his great start has been a huge positive (and a relief).

I don't disagree. I don't think Bloom is going to try to follow Tampa's Way, but rather he will be following LA's Way.

I am just saying that if the Sox were trying to move JD, it wasn't because of his 2020 performance.

It would be because of his contract and the ease of finding someone to fill his position, plus prospects coming back.
