I think another move is coming.

Kike slides into 2B more, and Verdugo goes to CF. The next move is to plug up 1B, maybe they're targeting Santana or Hosmer or someone else. But that would be a pretty nice lineup.

Kike

Bogaerts

JDM

Devers

Schwarber

Hosmer/Santana/someone not named Dalbec

Renfroe

Verdugo

Vazquez

Hosmer sucks.

We need 2 starting pitchers.

1B is a distant third, and if the plan is to playSchwarber there , it’s not even our 26th priority.

A.) I don't think the plan is to play Schwarber at 1B, maybe I'm wrong, maybe he plays there a little, but I'd be very surprised if he's our starting 1B going forward.

B.) Hosmer doesn't suck, he's having a down year. In his bad year, he still represents a massive upgrade over Dalbec. I'd take Hosmer's kind of suck over Dalbecs any day. His OPS is .721 VS lifetime .768. You also have to consider Hosmer is in a bad situation in San Deigo, I think a change of scenery in Boston would revert him back to his career norms, possibly even better at Fenway park. Also, San Deigo is going to give you a premium prospect just to take on his contract. You literally don't have to give ANYTHING up for him and you get prospects with him.

C.) It doesn't have to be Hosmer, I just threw his name on there because he's on the trading block, I don't really care I just want an upgrade at 1B. Take Hosmer out and put someone else into the equation. Santana? Kris Bryan? someone else? The point of my post was not to highlight Hosmer so I hope this doesn't turn into a massive Eric Hosmer conversation. He's not the only option out there at 1B.

Hosmer and his gigantic contract are not walking through that door.

Even if they pay 90%, I'd hang up.

He sucks. Dalbec/Cordero/Schwarber still has better upside than Hosmer.

Hosmer used to suck every 2 years: now it's 3 out of 4

Hosmer’s salary drops nearly 40% for the last 3 years starting in 2022. His AAV of some $18.8 mill or so is still an issue.

I’d be interested in seeing just how much San Diego would give to unload him. I expect Hassell, Gore and Campusano are off limits…

If you trade for Hosmer, you essentially have him through 2025. Why would you want him.

Since signing with SD:

2018 95 WRC+

2019 91 WRC+

2020 127 WRC+

2021 99 WRC+

Is he really having a "down year" or is that just who he is? He's not great defensively. He's average (at best) offensively. That's not a guy you get locked into long term.

I don't want him at $13M those last 3 years. No way.

I actually think Schwarber does play 1b. Where else would he play?

What if Ryan Weathers is sitting next to him on the plane to Boston?

2B. Anyone can play there now. Travis Shaw can play there. Mike Moustakas can play there.

That's how I see it.

Playing him in LF, Verdugo in CF and Kike/Arroyo at 2B/1B would work, but then Duran is benched and we've weakened several positions, defensively for what?

He's young, but... He's not a high k guy. 5.13 xERA. Has pitched poorly since June 1. His pitches don't have much movement on them.

Not sure that's enough for me to make that move.

Let's face it, Duran hasn't looked that hot lately.

Really?

It's been like a week, and we were going through mental contortions trying to find a way to play everyone (when all healthy) before Schwarber.

Well, we weaken LF.

Until Arroyo returns, if Kike is not at 2b, Chavis is. And Duran doesn’t appear to be as good in CF as Verdugo.

I was expecting Schwarber to take 1b and Dalbec to move to 2b. It’s a step down from his new position of SS…

I was talking when everyone is healthy, including Schwarber, himself, who may return about the time Arroyo does. (Marwin may be ready sooner.)

LF: Verdugo>Schwarber

CF: Kike/Duran > Verdugo/Duran

2B: Arroyo/Kike = Kike/Arroyo

1B: Schwarber

In the absence of me being wrong he plays LF, Verdugo goes to the center and Kike plays 2B. Duran becomes your 4th outfielder/pinch runner.

And the Rays add yet another fringey bullpen arm who will now morph into Trevor Hoffman right before our eyes…

If that’s the case, demote Duran for a month and let him play daily. Franchy Cordero can handle the limited role stuff.

And go get Schoop!!

I think you could use him up here as a bench bat, pinch-runner and with how much Cora shuffles the lineup and gives guys days off he's going to get a decent amount of at-bats. We're in a playoff run so I think you have to factor that in. If this was May or June I would agree with you, let the kid get regular at bats. But in the midst of a playoff run were trading regular at-bats with irregular at-bats for one month....not three. I can live with that and I think the Sox can too.

OPS of 513. 32.4 k%.

He's had flashes, but hasn't really been that good.

His sprint speed is pretty good. Maybe put Dalbec in CF. Why sign Fabian if you already have Dalbec there?

That's what we call an unrepeatable skill around here. :)

Well his postseason successes were largely in 2016, 5 years ago. He hasn’t done much in limited action since.

But the 2016 numbers were impressive in that he missed nearly the entire season…

Yuck. I think Renfroe and Schwarber split time.
