Speculative thought but I believe Pedroia got bad medical advice on knee treatments, apart from the Red Sox medical staff, and then compounded the damage by overly aggressive rehab, perhasps too early in his recovery. The likelihood of a catastrophic total wrecking of his knee joint in the Machado play is less likely as a sole cause. Too many NFL'ers recover within months from ACL's, MCL's, Achilles tears, etc. to think that Pedroia was ruined by the slide itself. If so, it should have been evident immediately and recovery not attempted.

He received bad advice and then messed up the recovery himself. Too much of a gamer to let it heal slowly.

It would have been better if it was a ligament. His issue was a deep injury to the meniscus. Losing the shock absorber in the knee leads to early arthritis. No true cure for that beyond replacing a joint, which they don't do at Pedroia's age for arthritis and would have ended his career. The only option at that point was microfracture surgery, which is a coin flip. It went tails for Pedey and his career came to a close. Great player, pain in the ass to root against, but a great player who did not give up until his efforts on the field threatened the quality of a long life he has after baseball. I wish him well

Damn, I just realized that the days of hearing Remy say "Pedroyer" are officially over. :(

I distinctly remember when Pedroia struggled to start his first year, Remy saying the Red Sox should replace him with back-up Alex Cora. Instead, Cora mentored and Dustin became Rookie of the Year.

Pedroia -- a second-round draft pick (65th overall) -- may be as good as any reason for Bloom not to sign Trevor Bauer and lose next summer's 39th pick.

Sad news :(

We knew it was coming, but it's still a bummer.

Pedroia was a great player, a great leader, and a great teammate, despite what some people think.

It's sad that his career ended the way it did, but it sounds like he's in a good place.

I wish him the best.

he approached the game in a way that any decent athlete should. he played with confidence, passion and determination. We were very fortunate to have someone like him play for our side.

Wait until his in the booth with Remy.

I had never heard the story about Papi not knowing Dustin's first name. That's a good one.

Also, I forgot the original reason for him saying "laser show."

He was a good teammate, until he wasn't.

He was always a good team-mate, and contrary to what fans say, no one on the team that I've heard speak ever said he 'threw team-mates under the bus.' His remark "it's not me, it's them" to me always meant ("Hey, don't look at me. When you hurt one of us, the team takes care of it, not the individual") even when I saw him say it. The fact is, of course, we don't know what he meant, but it's nice to see fans here celebrating his career. I never particularly liked him, but I sure was glad he was playing for the team I rooted for.

I do see Pedroia getting there eventually, but I don't think Remy will still be around at that point

I bet he just does a series or two here or there. I don't think he'll do it as a fulltime gig.

You think he's going to want to coach? He loves the game too much IMO. I remember how Tito used to force him to take a day off if he was banged up because he wouldn't come off the field otherwise

I think he'd be more likely to take a fulltime job as a coach rather than being in the booth. He's a guy who likes the comradery of a team. Harder to get that feeling in the booth.

However, he said that he wants to be at home with his kids, so there's a good chance he picks up a different hobby in the next decade to keep him going.

He's going to take up shaving birds and collecting deodorants from around the world...

The highlight replay videos running on several platforms will get you excited for Red Sox baseball even in the Covid era and now without Pedroia to bring the action. Pretty decent 2Bman and hitter as well.
