@PortlandSeaDogs

Sea Dogs' pitcher Denyi Reyes will be the starting pitcher for the Dominican Republic as they take on Sea Dogs' first baseman Triston Casas and @USABaseball in the @Olympics.

Was doing really well in AA. Had a 12.18 k/9. Much better than 2019. Has only appeared in 3 games in AAA. He gave up 3 runs in his first outing, but the next 3 IP were 2H, 2K, 0BB, 0R. Too early to tell. Not seen as the closer of the future anymore, but should be in MLB in the next few years.

"Thanks, Dave" can be meant seriously or sarcastically. I take it it's the latter here.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by how several DD picks have turned out.

I expected worse due in part to low draft picks and that season with IFA signing ban.

All in all, DD did horrible with IFA’s, an area we had started doing well in under Theo and Ben.

Our farm got better faster than I expected, but it was helped by the Betts and 2020 deadline sell off, and we are still just middle tier thanks to this year’s high pick draft.

Who hires and fires scouts?

What scouts did Bloom hire? He wasn't allowed to pull anyone from the Rays due to a non compete clause. It's still the same scouting department.

Not replacing scouts is still the GMs choice.

I wasn’t aware only Rays personnel are worthy.

Who did Bloom hire that has made a difference? I believe the scouting staff is virtually the same as it was during DD.

One year out of 4. Who’s fault was it the other 3?

How much say do you think the GM has in which Int'l guys to get? I think that comes from the scouts.

2016 - Mata, Castellanos, none of the top guys worked out

2017 - none

2018 - Daniel Flores got a $3M bonus and would probably make you rethink the Int'l signee situation (you going to blame DD for him?), Danny Diaz, Antoni Flores, Bello, Rafaela, Gilberto Jimenez, Aldo Ramirez

2019 - too soon to tell: Eduardo Lopez, Eduardo Vaughn, Bryan Gonzalez, Brainer Bonaci, Winkelman Gonzalez

They got one decent guy in 2016. The 2018 class would have been great if Flores didn't pass away. The 2019 class has some guys that are really turning it up right now (Bonaci, Winkelman) and some interesting high ceiling bats in Bryan and the Eduardos.

Have Bloom's two IFA seasons been better? Aside from Bleis, none of the guys he signed are in the top 60 on SoxProspects.

I’m on the road and don’t have time to check, but I think he made several hires.

A big game from Seabold, 6 IP, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts, 0 runs, 1 hit. Could Seabold get a spot start at some point with the Red Sox this year? If he follows this game up with another solid performance, he will probably be on the Red Sox's radar. In fact, it might make sense to move on from G.Richards (move him to the bullpen to see if he can be an effective 1 inning reliever), not only will Sale be returning soon, but Houck and now Seabold provide excellent depth, sufficient depth that they can proceed without using Richards in the rotation.

Downs continues to be out-of-whack (BA is now .195) with another 0 for 4 game with 3 strikeouts.

A solid Double A start from Murphy: 6 IP, 2 ER, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts.

OK, but not exceptional. He was recently promoted to AAA. When he was drafted, we were hoping he would develop into a future closer. At this point, he looks more like a middle inning reliever, a decent relief pitcher, but not great. I don't think he will be protected on the 40 man roster next year. Maybe the Phillies will take him in the Rule 5 draft, they need relief arms and Dombrowski drafted Feltman.

Good news on the pitching front. Murphy's numbers in Greenville weren't lighting the world on fire, but you can't just judge a player on their stat line.

@PeteAbe

Marcelo Mayer has 3 plate appearances in his first pro game. 13 pitches, 12 balls, three walks.

Fear by opposing pitchers already.

Fear by opposing pitchers already.

The opposing pitcher walked 6 of the 15 batters he faced including the last four. The guy couldn't throw strikes, which is not uncommon.

Meanwhile, Jay Groome and Nick Yorke deserve a promotion.

J.Downs was 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts! His batting average is down to .188. Brutal.

He needs the offseason

Outfielder Devlin Granberg went 2-for-4 with a double (10), and two RBI (28). Granberg has slashed .311/.333/.510over 156 plate appearances since his promotion to Double-A.

Can the hit tool carry him?

BTV still gives Downs a high value rating. Perhaps the next update will ding him down a notch.

Here are their current values for our prospects:

48 Casas

45 Duran

24 Mayer

20 Downs

11 Jimenez

7 Yorke

6 Mata

5 Bello, Jordan

4 Groome. Gonzalez, Seabold

3 Winckowski, McDonough, Rosario, R Hernandez, Bonaci, Decker, Lugo, Ward

2 Bleise, Potts, FValdez, Wong, Murphy, Gonzalez OF, Lopez, Howlett, Bazardo, Cannon, Chacon, Davis, Rafaela

1-1.1 Song, Feliz, Kavadas, Marcano, Vaughn, Celluci, Liu, Wu-Yelland

You really notice the lack of mid ranged prospects between 8-19. Maybe some below 8 will rise up in the next adjustments.

Kutter Crawford continues to look like a guy who will get serious consideration for the 40 man roster: 5 IP, 2 ER, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts. He continues his trend of excellent ratios--he doesn't walk many batters. I wonder how he profiles as a reliever?

I was thinking this morning about how much soxprospects.com site kind of sucks. No updates on K.Crawford and his future as a reliever or starter and nothing on Downs -- what is he doing wrong? How are the Red Sox trying to fix him? Actually, soxprospects has a lot of useful information but they don't have some of that inside information that I would like to know about....alas.

Bello continues to be interesting, very interesting: 5.1 IP with 11 strikeouts! He clearly has dominant stuff but he is still learning how to pitch. He continues to demonstrate an impressive ceiling, probably the best starting pitcher prospect in the Red Sox system.

Quite possible that other teams were asking about Crawford and Bello at the deadline, and Bloom wouldn't give them up...

I would’ve traded Kutter.
