I totally agree, but I do think...

Munoz > Arauz

(Marwin ain't going anywhere.)

Nobody thinks Munoz is going to save the season. I think the Sox should always be trying to optimize their lineup though. If it wins one extra game this year, it's worth it.

That was also the thinking with Duran...

Duran 570 career MLB OPS in 20 games

Munoz 734 career MLB OPS in 208 games

I think with Yairo, we have a little better idea of the player he is. He was an exciting guy to watch last season. He has also worked on getting his k rate down and he's currently at 13.6%. He's not going to hit bombs, but he puts the ball in play and can field several positions.

The 20 game sample size by Duran is close to useless.

I would demote Arauz for Munoz and DFA any one of 3-4 guys (Santana, Robles, Andriese or someone who will likely be DFA'd this winter- like Potts or Rosario- maybe.)

Munoz at 32 games.

Feltman went 2 IP perfect, K'd 4.

Casas went 1 for 7 (double header).

Groome had 8 k's, but gave up 3 HR's over 5.1.

Yorke's hit streak now at 20 games (884 OPS for the season).

Yorke's OPS by month:

May 464

June 953

July 967

Aug 1656

I would say that his 37.7% k rate and 2.9% bb rate tells us something.

Yes, it says he got off to a bad start, as many rookies do.

Some get better: some don't.

BTW, we already knew he K'd alot. The hope was, and still is, he can produce enough when he doesn't K and or can improve on his K rate and BB rate as he matures.

Franco:

First 20 games - 632 OPS, 22% k rate

Since then - 762 OPS, 15% k rate

With a similar increase, maybe Duran keeps a low 700 OPS? Maybe his k rate gets to 30%? That's better, but not ideal.

My guess is Franco and Duran both keep getting better than their early numbers.

Of course, I could be wrong. Many promising prospects flop and are out of baseball pretty quickly.

I'm sure glad we did not give up on Pedey and JBJ over much larger sample sizes than these.

Pedey and JBJ had offseasons to workout their issues. Duran doesn't have that luxury right now.

Pedroia's sample also wasn't "much bigger" than Duran's. If Duran follows JBJ's path, he'll be ready in 2023.

I'm arguing about judging players over such tiny sample sizes. 20 games is tiny.

The fact that Pedey had an off season to work things out and it still took him way longer than Duran has had helps my case not yours.

Pedey's sample size was...

Year 1

31 games: .561 OPS in 98 PAs

Year 2 (2007)

First 21 games: .518 OPS in 68 PAs

Duran:

20 games: .580 OPS in 69 PAs.

Again, I'm glad nobody made definitive judgments on Pedey after his first176 PAs and 52 games, which was a worse OPS than Duran.

JBJ had a bigger sample size than Duran, too, even just year 1.

.617 OPS in 107 PAs (37 games)

Year 2

.531 in 423 PAs (127 games)

Year 3

.426 in first 71 PAs (24 games)

Wow! What patience Theo & Tito showed this guy!

No, it helps my case. In a pennant chase, Duran will not have the time to turn it around. He'll need a much longer leash, but it may best to send him to AAA to work it out. Otherwise, it's going to drag the team's hopes down the drain.

Um, we were in a pennant race when Pedey (2006- 1 GB on AUG 13) and the start of 2007 and JBJ (2013) were brought up.

I'm talking about you judging players based on 20 games, not when a team can't or can extend the leash.

That is an interesting issue to discuss, and we have had some of those talsk about Dalbec, Cordero and others.

JBJ's 2013:

Brutal 12 game stretch, sent down for 1.5 months.

Brutal 7 game stretch, sent down for 1 month.

Brutal 4 game stretch, sent down for 2 months.

Called up when rosters expanded, sucked, kept off postseason roster.

His 2013 is not comparable at all to Duran's.

Munoz got an infield hit to extend the streak to 34- tying Dom D.

Meneses hits a granny in the 5-4 loss.

Bello goes 6 IP with 9Ks and 0BB, 7 hits and 1 ER.

Woo was 2 hit, today, but Ockimey walked 3 times to bring his OPS to .809. He looks like a career AAA player, since the Sox chose Travis Shaw over him.

Lopez hit a solo shot. Downs walked twice- his best game is a while.

Seabold goes 5, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs and just 1 BB with 5 Ks.

Brasier got lit up: 3H, 1BB, 3 ER in 1 IP. Rios let up 2H, 1BB, 1 ER in 1 IP.

Portland won 10-5.

Granberg making a push for Rule 5 protection by going 3-5 with a 2B & HR (.825 OPS).

Cottam also went 3-5 with a 2B & HR (.938 OPS).

Williams went 3-5, Casas 1-4 w BB. Potts 2-5 with a dinger.

Greenville won 7-3

Dearden 2-5 w 17th HR, Davis and Groshams HR'd.

Sogard went 3-5

Salem was shut out 5-0, but Wu-Yelland went 5 IP, 1 H, 3BB and 0 ER.

T Reed went 2-4 (.820 OPS)

Again, still no sign of Blaze Jordan or Tyler Mcdonough in Salem. Pitching is not very good outside of Wu-Yelland and occasionally Drohan. The catching/dh choice of continuing to use Marrero is baffling. The guys avg is below the avg weight of most middle school ball players these days. Yorke still seems to be the only kid on the team who has the ability to turn into something!

I'm no expert on Sox prospects, especially at the lower levels, but these numbers look encouraging:

OPS Against:

.703 Blalock (60 IP)

.680 DiValerio (54)

.707 Kwiatkowski (51)

.579 C Cobb (51)

.524 Roedahl (45)

.576 Fernandez (36)

.440 B Walter (31)

OPS

.961 Joe Davis (189)

.871 Groshans (141)

.864 Yorke (271 ABs)

.786 Northcut (274)

.834 S Scott (212)

Nobody knows why he hasn't appeared. There's an off day today. Monday is a big promotion day. Maybe Tuesday he starts?

Yorke has dominated since May 1. Joe Davis doesn't have any carrying tools aside from his bat. He'll have to thread the needle to become a Matt Stairs type.

@IanCundall

The Red Sox top international FA signing from the 2021 class, OF Miguel Bleis, is off to a great start in the DSL. Through 10 games, he’s 9 for 23 w/3 2B, 1 HR, 3 SB & 2 BB:2 K. Triple slash: 391/.462/.652. Scout feedback I’m getting has been very positive: “He’s the real deal.

I guess I no longer have to consider Lavarnway the Real Deal. We have a new contender.

Who was the last good or great IFA we signed?
