Another icon that I never had the pleasure of watching. From what I've read and heard, Gibson is the type of pitcher that MLB needs more of in today's game. I mentioned in another thread that pitchers just aren't intimidating enough these days and batters are way too comfortable in the box. Would these young guys dare flip their bats with Gibson on the mound?

RIP

Dick Allen discussing his divorce: "She went to court and got it all, including my pension. And she never once had to stand in against a Bob Gibson fastball. That's what's unfair."

Love it.

And Gibson actually had to step up to the plate - about 1,500 times, in fact. Pretty good hitter, too. Lifetime BA of .206 with 24 homers.

In 9 career postseason starts Gibson pitched 81.0 innings. The little catch is that one of the games was 8 innings and one was 10.

Make starting pitching great again

Rest In Peace to one of the greatest pitchers to ever touch a baseball field. Very sad for the Cardinals and the MLB to lose Gibson and Lou Brock in the span of a month.

Because of him and that year, they had to Lower the Mound, and move it back. 1968 was deadly to be a Hitter.

Tom and Bob, jeez my childhood, is going.

God Bless, Bob Gibson.

I hear because of Kyle Hart, they’re thinking of moving it back up.

(Gibson wasn’t solely responsible for lowering the mound. Pitching over all was. Carl Yastrzemski lead the AL with a lowly .301 BA, and didn’t even face Gibson that year)...

In the late 1960s as an adolescent at a church camp,, I was in awe of a minister who said he got a hit off Bob Gibson as a high schooler in Omaha, Just Friday morning I was telling my daughter about prominent African Americans from Omaha, including Gibson and Gale Sayers, who died September 23.

Maybe not as high as '68, but somewhere in between might not be a bad idea.

I don't like the game being so offense oriented. I want to see a well pitched, well defended game, not a slugfest. And I want to see a starting pitcher who is actually a starting pitcher who can pitch 7 innings or more.

As someone tweeted the other day, bullpen games and defensive shifts should be outlawed.

For Pitchers Health. Might have less TJ's and more innings from Starters. Hitters today wont have a Problem. They are hitting 100 MPH anyways, used to it now.

Anyway they don't care if they Strikeout now.

I know that, I was there. You know who he beat. percentage points I believe without looking it up?

OMG I've only ever dreamed about that kind of world. Sign me up.

Why? What's the point? You want good defense? This is part of good defense.

Without looking it up? Nope. I wasn't born yet.

But I m guessing none of the then-active greats like Robinson, Oliva, Carew, Mantle or Killebrew are the answer...

Good point about how raising the mound might help pitchers' health.

To cut down on home runs. To help bring back the intimidation factor of the pitcher. To see more pitcher's duels and less slugfests.

Is it really good baseball watching players hit HRs on broken bats, off balanced or worse swings?

We could "unjuice" the balls, instead.

I'm going off memory, but I think Danny Cater was second at .290... ya, the bum the Sox traded eventual Cy Young winner Sparky Lyle for.

The batting race that was really close -- to the fourth decimal place I believe -- was 1970, when Yaz lost the last day to Alex Johnson.

Yes, Danny cater was second at .290.

What's interesting is the fact that 5 NL players hit over .301 and 11 hit over .290.

1970 was when I first started following the Sox. Yaz was the man!

I believe Ted Williams also lost a batting title to Geroge Kell that way, which cost Ted a Triple Crown,,,
