Other issue in the horizon is that current CBA ends after 2021 season. I thought owners got the better end of the stick last time around. But this COVID thing will be used against the players due to significant financial losses suffered by entire baseball. Sure the players suffered too but the owners will take care of themselves first.

Not sure where the luxury tax threashhold is headed. If you has asked me last year I would have said jumping up to $220-$225M range but now I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Tony Clark will be fileted if he doesn't get more back for the players this time. I think there's a very good chance of a strike.

How it worked with David Wright:

For Wright to receive the rest of his contract the Mets could simply release him. But a possible scenario is to continue what has basically happened the last two-plus years, for Wright to stay on the Mets’ 40-man roster while unavailable. It’s not so restrictive during the season, when Wright can be stashed on the 60-day disabled list which frees his 40-man spot for someone else. But during the offseason, when building the roster, there is no DL, so the Mets would effectively be limited to 39 spots.

Keeping a disabled Wright on the 40-man roster would also allow the Mets to receive insurance to cover the bulk of Wright’s salary, which they have done the past two years. Insurance was on the hook for 75 percent of Wright’s $20 million salary in 2017, and mostly the same in 2018, save for the pro-rated portion of Wright’s salary the Mets will pay for the six days he is active, roughly $642,000.

Under this scenario the Mets would only pay $6.75 million of the $27 million remaining due Wright, with insurance picking up the remaining $21.25 million. The parties could agree to a buyout arrangement of some sort which could alleviate the Mets’ roster crunch, presumably at some financial cost.

Prince Fielder was in this position after his career ended in July 2016 with a neck injury. He remained on the Rangers’ 40-man roster until October 2017, with insurance paying a portion of his salary. With three more years left on Fielder’s contract, the Rangers reached a settlement with the insurance company and released Fielder.

Not all major league contracts are insured, for various reasons. The Red Sox did not insure their five-year, $95 million contract with Pablo Sandoval, who was a colossal bust in Boston and was injured for all but three games in 2016.

“The fact is that it’s a case-by-case basis, and we have insurance on some players, not all players,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said on WEEI in 2016. “Collecting on an insurance is not the easiest thing and then you have a debate on how much insurance and when do you collect? We do it on a case-by-case basis, and we did not do it for Pablo.”

I guess it just depends on if the Sox had insurance on Pedroia? My guess is they just don't do that since they are so CHEAP!

None of that seems to address the tax question though.

If he assumes it is because the final product was unwatchable, which it was, the reaction could be a positive one for us fans...

I guess it comes down to Bloom's ability to make/sign good deals. I love having Sale but if you gave me the option, I wouldn't want his contract right now.

I think most posters would agree.

Not many would right now. But if he looks good when he comes back, that could change rapidly.

Most posters on here loved the deal when it was signed.

Here's what Jacko said:

Plus minus on being reasonable. Sale sold off some years to gain a big payday. The Sox traded uncertainty about the shoulder for a shorter term. If fully healthy, he blow away Price’s 7 yr $217 mil contract, but that isn’t the case. So each side gave a little and I’m sure both are happy

I think Sale and DD both went into that deal knowing about his elbow and the strong likelihood he would miss 2020 or 2021. But for Sale, he was in a position that really hindered his ability to get a big contract, and for DD, he knew he'd never be able to get an ace for that few years on the open market, even if it meant paying him a lot of money to sit out for a season...

Any contract paid to a player who is out long term is not great. However, it was most likely buying low on a guy with CY upside when healthy. If it weren't for the other contracts around Sale, it wouldn't be a big deal. Sox have enough funding to eat one bad salary. Eating Price and Eovaldi and Sale and Pedroia and... is another story.

The only good thing is that Sale and Bogey are the only big contracts not gone by the end of 2022.

I think of it as a more extreme version of the contracts other teams have given to pitchers like Drew Smyly, Michael Pineda, and Garret Richard, all of whom received 2 year deals where each was already known to be missing that first season...

Unless Bogaerts opts out..

As a fan, I want good players on my team longterm. I know Tampa wins a lot of regular season games with its musical chairs roster, but a star core is better for the franchise fanbase (don't say "but if they win, they'll sell tickets" -- just look at the Trop). Plus, there are elements of dependability with a group of players who grow together...

... and reliability; in a sense, the constant turnover metaphor happened with San Diego's pitching staff this week. One day, nine different Padres each threw a shutout inning to blank St. Louis -- 24 hours later vs. LA it worked great again for five frames, until their 6th and 7th pitchers just didn't have it that day.

The only way to sell out the Trop is to move the Yankees there.

This hurts to talk about.

Unless he flops, gets hurt or COVID kills player salaries, he's going to opt out.

Yes, it hurts!

My favorite holiday of the year, Yankee Elimination Day! Living behindenemylines lines you get to see the Yankee hats and t-shirts disappear. An act like you didn’t know when you ask, when is the Yankees next game. DaaaaaaaaaaaaaaYankees lose!

Didn't stay up late last night so I didn't know the outcome of the Yankees/Rays game until I woke up this morning. What a wonderful morning it is. The Yankees lose again and the World Series drought continues for them. I am sure that you know who will have an excuse.

All Yankee players and staff will get participation ribbons for this year! Congratulations on your success. It has to be gratifying to tie for 5th place.

October baseball is better than no October baseball two years running, right?

Yup. I like watching and cheering for my team as long as possible. But as an MLB fan, I was kind of looking forward to the drama of a Yankees-Astros ALCS... Still holding out hope for the best theater: LA-Houston World Series (but won't say which team I'm rooting for until it happens).

I'll take our last 17 year's postseasons over any other team in MLB.

Except for maybe combing STL & SFG, we're probably better than any other two teams combined.

On those cold dark winter nights in New England, Ted Sox fans can sit by the fire with warm memories of the past.

I had no really "happy" baseball memories before 2004, so this is better than nothing. 2018 was not that long ago, and I'm seeing an improving outlook, so I'm not hung up on the past.

Only thing that matters is championships and in the last 20 years its 4-1!
