I’ll have a lot more on the Red Sox fall instructs over the coming weeks, but a name to watch at the 40-man roster deadline is RHP Eduard Bazardo. Bazardo’s velocity was 93-97, up from 91-95 in 2019. He also has a plus CB with an elite spin rate of ~3000 rpm that he can command.

Bazardo was excellent at instructs and threw a lot, so other teams got a good look. If the Red Sox don’t protect him, there’s a good chance a team would take a shot on him in the Rule 5 draft given he has the potential for two plus pitches and at least average control.

We have plenty of room for a few more rule 5's.

Per Rotoworld, JBJ is a "priority" for the Astros...

Why would he be a priority for the Astros but not for the Sox? Is it because they think they compete at the highest level and we think we are 2 or 3 years away?

It's also about money. They are saving a lot of money by replacing Springer with JBJ.

Replacing him with Marisnik may not go over very well with their fans.

No one knows if he is a priority for the Sox. Just that he is one for the Astros...

Good point.

He's just not a priority to me.

Bloom hopefully won’t expose Bazardo while protecting Chris Mazza and Ryan Weber...

I think we keep Weber and probably Mazza.

So, assuming we protect Bazardo, along with Seabold, Wong, Mata, Potts, Rosario & Groome, we'll need to clear 3 slots. (We currently have 36 players on the 40 man roster.)

1. Bye bye Pedey.

2. Bye bye Brice

3. Bye bye Springs

When we start adding free agents:

1. Hall

2. Stock

3. Walden

4. Aybar or Wilson

5. Chatham or Arauz

6. Hart, Mazza, Weber

Nooooo! Not Ara-oooz! He'll be Correa's back-up when Carlos' back acts up...

He didn’t get selected last year. Maybe they think he’ll sneak through again.

I’d gamble on protecting Bazardo over Ryan Weber

I don't think many people expected Weber to stay on the 40 man all last offseason.

I did the MLBTR free agent contest.

My picks for the Sox were Odirizzi, Quintana, Porcello, Hand, Wong, and Miller.

I don't think they sign all 6, but I think I can get 3 of them...

Why Weber before Brice, Hall, Stock, Springs and a few others?

Really no bad choices there. Also Mazza and Valdez.

Weber was just an example of how high I would go. I think the Sox easily keep Weber over the other six...

I'm not really sure, but Bloom seems to like something about him, having signed him with the Rays as well as with the Sox.

The Sox 40 man roster has 10 players on it I would consider expendable. Weber is probably the highest-ranking (re: least expendable) of those 10.

The other 9 are - in no particular order - Mazza, Springs, Hall, Brice, Walden, Valdez, Stock, Hall, and Hart.

If someone wants to say another player like Wilson or Aybar is more expendable than Weber, fine. Not really worth arguing about as to which AAAA player is the better one. Bottom line is there is a lot of deadwood at the bottom of this roster that can probably be purged (and re-signed to MiLB deals if need be) in order to clear the space for the Sox worthy Rule 5 eligible minor leaguers and a few acquisitions...

I was going to say Aybar or Wilson (not both) and Chatham or Arauz (not both), so the list is really about 12.

6 Rule 5's

6 free agents or trade additions

Even with all this, we may still have one of the weakest bottom 5 or 10 of 40 man rosters in MLB.

Six Rule 5 pickups might be an unprecedented amount and most probably would not be much of an upgrade if one at all over many of the 12 players you'd be DFAing.

No, I meant protecting 6 rule 5 players from our own system.

(If we draft a rule 5 player, or two, they would be includes in the 6 additions we make this winter. There's room for 8-9 more, actually.)

Picking 6 rule V guys that would have to stick on your MLB roster is a very odd thing to do. I could see grabbing 2 or 3 and letting one go during ST. 6? That's just silly.

Again, I'm talking about protecting 6 rule 5 guys from our system not drafting 6.

Mata

Groome

Bazardo

Potts

Rosario

Wong
