If the Sox were able to take a flier on Sanchez at what he made in 2020, I think they should do it. He still has high upside. If they moved him off C, maybe his bat comes back?

And play him where?

1b? And bench Dalbec?

DH? And move JDM to LF and Benintendi to CF?

I like Dalbec, but I'm not sold on him being anything other than Kevin Maas. His high k rate isn't sustainable right now. And it's not like JD was raking last year. There's a solid chance JD never returns to form. With a 26th roster spot, you can stash a guy for the whole season (see Arauz).

There is a chance JD never returns to form, but he is also immovable on that current deal. But is JD an 81 OPS+ hitter? Sanchez is a 99 OPS+ hitter over the past 3 seasons. So is a declining JDM better than Sanchez? He might be.

The one thing Sanchez has going for him is that he is still only 27 years old...

The super high K rate is very concerning, but as long as he can maintain a decent OBP, I'm okay with the K's. His power seems to be real. He was a decent fielder at 3B in the minors and may be better than Devers. I like his chances at becoming a plus defender at 1B and a fine back-up 3Bman. If for some reason, his defense was a mirage, he could end up replacing JD at DH in the longer term plans.

While 92 PAs at the MLB is way too small a sample size, his .359 OBP was impressive and right in line with his overall minor league OBP of .362.

I agree, I don't see Sanchez as being a fit with Boston, unless they think they can fix his defense enough to play the catcher position- highly doubtful.

Being a 2nd or 3rd string catcher, even if a bad one, helps his value, too.

Interesting stat on Gary Sanchez:

120 postseason PA's

44 K's

6 BB's

Holy cow.

Is that your impression of Mel Allen?

The postseason is just a crapshoot.

Can Dalbec maintain a .394 BABIP? Because of how hard he hits the ball it should be higher than normal, but probably not that high.

Does a bear s*** on the moon?

Dalbec will come back to Earth. but we all know what pre-emptive measure the Sox will take.

Mitch Moreland...

Maybe I should have amended to 'Holy cowshit'.

I wonder what it would have taken to elicit that response from Mel Allen? Maybe Phil Rizzuto executing the Hidden Ball Trick by jamming the ball up his ass?

If his BA and OBP drop 30 points, but his power continues, the high K's will be more than compensated for, but if his OBP is around .300, I'll be worried.

No doubt, although both K a lot.

But Dalbec has more power, isn't limited to hitting just pitchers who throw with the left arm, and can throw a baseball with authority...

I've always felt Dalbec had a better chance at doing well than Chavis.

(I have Chavis in half my suggest trades on the trade values site.)

I can't see Sanchez being tendered a contract. He's almost completely untradable, and he has no position with the Yankees...

Compare the numbers over the past three years for Gary Sanchez in his age 25, 26 and 27 seasons (2018-20) and the numbers for catcher Mike Zunino in his age 25, 26 and 27 seasons (2016-18):

GS 244 G, 998 PA, 132 R, 62 HR, 154 RBI, .200/.296/.453/.748, OPS+ 99, 3.7 bWAR, 4.0 fWAR

MZ 292 G, 1032 PA, 105 R, 57 HR, 139 RBI, .223/.300/.462/.763, OPS+ 107, 7.0 bWAR, 8.3 fWAR

Following the 2018 season Seattle traded Zunino, Michael Plassmeyer and Guillermo Heredia to Tampa Bay for Mallex Smith and Jake Fraley. Sanchez likely has far less trade value because of his defensive deficiencies.

Or not.

Plus Sanchez's 2020 sample is nothing short of horrific.

With Sanchez , there is still the thought that he has big time power hitting potential. You don't like to give up on that too quickly.

Harm , The expression "Or not" has achieved catch phrase status on TalkSox. Maybe you need to patent it , because a lot of folks are stealing it. As the old time stripper, " Gypsy" Rose Lee , used to say , " You gotta have a gimmick."

"Or not" is the humble acknowledgment of a mere fan who has far less expertise and information than those in MLB front offices.

Well, yeah. Everyone without a gimmick has been purged.

Bloom also says Eduardo Rodriguez continues to progress from myocarditis and continues to ramp up his physical activities.

Expressed differently: What do I know?

Funnily enough, I'm reading a book right now about French philosopher Michel Montaigne. He was extremely fond of the Greek word "epekho", which means "I suspend judgment".
