You're not alone. I have no idea on most these references either.

Me three. Not a big fan of movies in general, and I'm young enough to not have watched any timeless TV shows that get referenced here.

pretty good article:

https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2020/03/19/what-will-happen-with-player-salaries-contracts-service-time/

the uniform player contract, which contains all of the boilerplate applicable to every player, specifically states that allows teams to suspend contracts during a “national emergency”

The players will not be paid.

Service time is a bit more complicated. It’s possible that the league would argue that the “suspend the operation of the contract” language means that the passage of time, for contractual purposes, stops as well. That’d be pretty extreme. Of course we learned from the Associated Press last night that the union is suggesting that players should be given a full season of service time even if the season ends up getting canceled in its entirety. That’s the other extreme, but it’s an extreme that at least acknowledges that (a) the players aren’t getting any younger while the crisis goes on; and (B) payment, for most players, is directly tied to their age.

No idea what venmo is either. Tired of new words LOL

It's like paypal. People use it so that others can forward them money for bills or whatever.

Once again, I did not get the reference and have no idea what movie that is from, which left me wondering why the heck MVP posted that.

Opening credits of “Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail.”

As you likely have more spare time than normal (like all of us), this is suggested viewing. Not sure if Netflix is streaming it, but they are streaming “Life of Brian,” which is also suggested viewing...

It is on Netflix.

Michael Palin's lengthy instruction on the number to be counted to before throwing the Holy Hand Grenade...that's one of my favorite scenes.

Then my plans for this evening are set...

maybe not. the EU has reached out to Netflix to reduce streaming service to avoid breaking the interweb....

f*** off EU. That would trigger WW3.

I don’t think it’s possible to mention a scene in that movie that isn’t going to make me think “Yeah! That is the best one!”

And despite that, I still think “Life of Brian” is funnier.

Also, if “Jabberwocky” starring Michael Palin is available, it’s also recommended viewing. Absolute classic...

Here is a crazy thought for those of us starved for baseball, How about MLB or the MLB network start a virtual baseball tournament using one of those baseball simulation games or software applications.

What I am suggesting get real managers or execs from real teams competing with suped up graphics etc, and broadcasting over MLB TV or NESN etc. After all how many reruns of the mad fisherman can one endure.

I wonder if they are giving any thought to playing games without fans. The TV ratings would be through the roof. It might actually promote the game to young people if they played some day games since everyone is at home.

Encouraging indeed.

What's the current thought on how well the virus will survive in summer temps?

I have my own opinion about it, but I never "wing it" here (by that I mean I never state that something is a medical fact unless I know it is almost certainly true). My opinion is that the virus is doing well (as in proliferating) in warmer climates right now-the Philippines, Indonesia etc. I don't believe temperature is going to make a difference.

There is encouraging news about the efficacy of an old antimalarial drug, chloroquin. It seems to interfere with the ability of the virus to bind to receptors in the lungs. Studies have been done in China showing that it is effective in reducing the severity of the disease, but so far its not been studied here. I say give it a try if someone has severe disease. It is highly unlikely to hurt.

BTW: where has Jacko been? He is on the front lines in NY as an ER doc as I recall. Hopefully he is keeping out of harms way as much as possible.

Don't see that happening because even without fans it takes a couple of hundred people to put on a game not to mention broadcast it

It couldn't be done now, but maybe as the curve starts to flatten the initial games could be held without fans and take every precaution with production crews etc.

Baseball is overproduced anyway. You really only need like 4 cameras.

It isn't just the warmer weather but increased UV radiation from bright direct sunlight. The Chinese reported some success using UV radiation on the virus. The jury is still out. Some virologists believe UV radiation appears to reduce the amount of time the virus can survive on surfaces exposed to direct sunlight but no one really knows for sure.

Agreed, and Guerin can stay home and they can limit the production to a single feed for TV and radio.

Anything that would get rid of those sidelined reporters and in studio guests would be welcomed.

Here's an idea for a 62 game season (starting late July after 2 weeks of "summer training"):

4 Home and 4 Away vs own division (32 games).

3 Home vs 5 teams and 3 Away vs 5 teams -other 2 divisions (30 games).

Top 8 teams from each league make the playoffs. All rounds are 7 games. Make the playoffs have much more games and teams.

1st round: 16 teams- possible 56 games.

2nd round: 8 teams- possible 28 games.

ALC/NLC: 4 teams- possible 14 games.

WS: 2 teams- possible 7 games (consider 9 game series, here.)

If mid July is not quite the time to start, how about a shorter season starting in August?

3H & 3A vs own div (24 games)

3H vs 5 teams (15)

3A vs 5 teams (15)

54 game season.
