How about a short-season MLB Madness!?

Bracketed like college basketball's March Madness, with seeding per the 2020 draft order, the 2019 league-champion Washington Nationals and Houston Astros would receive first-round byes in the 30-team field.

Each match-up would feature a best-of-seven series with the winners advancing and the opening-round losers dropping into the consolation bracket.

Fans (and nonfans) can fill out their brackets at the office then cheer for the Cinderella team.

And the Seattle Mariners end their playoff drought.:)

Harm , Interesting idea . And it sounds plausible.......... Well , except for the last sentence .

Just to inject some baseball on to the board today.

Assuming the 2020 season does resume at some point, what do you suppose happens with Rule 5 picks?

The expanded rosters make them easier to hold on to. And will teams just have to keep them for the 60-100 games in 2020 and that’s it? Or will their Rule 5 status roll over into 2021 until they have been rostered for a full 162 games (which I believe would be similar to how previous Rule 5 picks with DL/IL time were handled)?

The season will have a lot of double headers. There's a chance that rosters are increased to 28 players. I don't think the Rule V status should roll over since service time is now being prorated.

Update on this: There is no automatic CBT reset if there’s no 2020 season. If there is no 2020 season and Sox spend > $210M in 2021, they’d be taxed as a team surpassing the CBT threshold for a third straight season.

BOS at TBR, two years ago today. Full game.

I hate when someone abbreviates Tampa Bay as TBA or TBR, or even TPA, which is the Tampa airport. To see the league doing that on YouTube was moderately annoying

What abbreviation do you prefer?

I think I've seen TBR the most since it's Tampa Bay Rays. Kinda like NYY is New York Yankees.

This really screws the Red Sox over if there is no season this year.

So much for signing Mookie as a free agent!

I just finished watching Game 5 of the 2018 ALDS against the Yankees.

I had forgotten what a heart attack Kimbrel was in that game.

Think you mean Game 4.

But yeah, I remember watching that game in bed, while my roommate was sleeping, so I had to be quiet. But, when I heard the ball hit the bat of Sanchez, I thought it was over

Yes, Game 4.

I was sure the Sox were going to blow that game.

@MLB_PR

The league-wide initiative of financial support for Minor League players has been extended through May 31st.

That was bad enough -- Kimbrel had me drinking a growler a game (my brother-in-law is a brewer; still essential!). But the game that had me hyperventilating was Game 4 in the ALCS vs Houston: Kimbrel opened the 8th, Sox up 8-5. What could go wrong?

First batter -- Kemp rips one down the RF line -- luckily, Mookie makes a perfect throw to nail him at second (Bogie slaptag on the helmet). But then... Kimbrel hits Bregman, Springer doubles, Altuve grounds out to SS, run scores 8-6. It gets worse.

Houston 9th vs. Kimbrel: with one out, Reddick walks, Correa walks, McCann elevates... and just misses a walk-off, caught by Betts. Then Kemp walks to load 'em up. Bregman swings at the first pitch, a soft sinking liner -- BENI!!!!!!

Kimbrel got credit for the save...

Off the bat, that ball from Bregman looked like trouble. No matter how many times I watch it, I still find it hard to believe Beni was able to make that catch.

Kimbrel struggled no doubt. The garbage can tolled for thee...

I've played a lot of left field in my years. In a split second, you just react -- there's really no time to think do-or-die, game-on-the-line, even season-on-the-line (an Astros' win ties the series, with Verlander and Game Five in Houston looming next)...

... but that's exactly what was at stake on Bregman's liner. That's why I consider Benintendi's catch the most important in Red Sox history (during my lifetime). Instead, we get the Verlander commercial: "good-things-come-in-threes" -- right before and after Devers flips his 3-run jack to the Crawford Boxes to win the pennant.

T... thanks for the compliments on the missus (an amazing "person")... unlucky (or lucky) for you she's too busy this year to teach another online course in Allied Health at UConn.

Thunder, Do you know it the NCAA baseball season has been completely cancelled?

NCAA has canceled all winter and spring seasons:

Yes, as have the other NCAA spring sports. UConn was going to open up a new ballpark on Sunday

Not my field of study, nor my strength. I do know a few people in the Allied Health program though

Yeah, that ALCS game was just as bad. Kimbrel ultimately got the job done, but he sure caused a few gray hairs along the way.

Don't get me started on the 'Save'.

Our relief pitching was poor. Good field play and luck got us the win. I am just as happy we are moving on to a different group. Will we get to play this year. Very doubtful anything happens until June and even that is optimistic. More likely 2nd half start.

I'm fine with that. Won't be any nights where you're sitting at Fenway and the wind chill is below 30 with a steady drizzle

We are all hoping we'll have a decent baseball season this year. Perhaps we'll get the 2nd half in. I may be in the minority, but I am okay with them extending the season into November.

Yes, because you're in Virginia.

Some of us are in MA and IL. November can be very different up here...

Well the other reason why I wouldn't want that is because my passion is football. After Labor Day, I stop caring about baseball, unless the Sox are in the playoffs, in which case I'll skip September and then come back in October. On years they aren't in it, I barely watch the postseason at all. Also I work for a college football team so I don't exactly have a lot of spare time during football season anyway
