My students in China are still under apartment arrest -- but are hopeful they'll be allowed out and back into school buildings in April. That will be 10 weeks minimum they will have been sheltered in place, but without any choice, enforced by a communist military regime.

 

Meanwhile, U.S. citizens are strongly advised to "enjoy your living rooms". Even if people here did stay home -- which they won't unless ordered back inside by National Guardsmen -- we're looking at half a baseball season by the time players ramp back up and are ready to rock.

 

I like the idea of playing July-August for seeding for one entire 30-team tourney... set to played in September and October. This way every team is in it, every team has a shot, and everybody is still alive in the fall. Half the cities that usually have no choice but to focus on football may have renewed interest in baseball.

 

It's radical, but so is this calendar year. And a perfect excuse to try something new and different to generate interest.

Back on point. Many schools will potentially close for the year. Is June still a good guess for Opening Day? Early July around the usual All Star Break. No way do they cancel the whole year, right?

My mother was a girl when the Spanish influenza hit. She cared for her mother and aunt which pulled them through. So many who didn't have care givers passed away. It was much worse than COVID-19. Millions died worldwide. What I am hearing from so many people is panic. I think we are doing the right thing by limiting crowds and that should continue until at least testing catches up. We will thhen begin to see if the impact of separating people and get some idea of when we can start to return to more normalcy and perhaps a baseball season. My softball season was cancelled but we still get together once in a while to hit and shag balls. We can keep our distance there and it would be worse to sit at home and look at the walls.

no. obviously the virus is all over the planet now.

within China there were extreme measures put in place very quickly to minimize the spread throughout the country. Wuhan was completely bolted in. military checkpoints setup and nobody went in our out. massive immediate testing dictated anyone else that needed to be quarantined. anyone with even a sniffle would lock themselves in.
