Often times it's the scarcity of something that makes it popular See: Toilet Paper.

IMO it's difficult to say that one sport is more popular than the other since it might depend on saturation. Would football be as popular if people could tune in to it six nights a week? Would baseball be more popular if it were only played on Sundays?

Football is actually on 3 nights a week now. 4 of you count college.

But how many really watch football that often?

And yet we hear nothing over the Olympics...

After the World Series ends, there are college games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, making for 7 days a week

I don't watch any US college sports any more, because of all the corruption.

Except UConn football, right?

I used to like it more, but the Cam Newton scandal was the straw that broke the Tiger’s back. It really slammed home the “money over everything” in college sports.

Plus my Alma Mater (WPI) just doesn’t have an exciting athletic program. When the Final Four rolls around, I find myself rooting for Holy Cross (if they make it), because they’re also from Worcester and part of the Worcester Consortium with WPI, and that makes them the closest thing I have to having a team in the Big Dance. And even then, it lasts one game...

But NFL football is more susceptible to the spreading of COVID-19...

Because there are more players? MLB guys are often within 6 ft of each other.

Not nearly as often. And certainly not when on defense.

Plus they change out the ball a lot more often in favor of a brand new one...

As I said, popularity is objective. Importance is subjective.

But popularity and importance go hand in hand

I say no.

Golf is a very popular sport. But it's totally unimportant to non-golf fans, which most of Talksox seems to be.

American Football will at some point in the future will suffer the same relative loss in popularity as baseball and horse racing. I recall when I was a boy high school football games were played before SRO crowds, now not so much. My 15 grandchildren aren't as interested in football as I was when I was their age. Sports have a natural progression. Of my 11 grandsons, only 2 play American pee wee football. One of those also wrestles btw. The older ones never played American football. Their parents are so concerned about concussions I don't think they will ever allow them to play beyond middle school. I see that concern as a growing one.

The concussion concern is legitimate and something many are trying to address with better equipment. But the sport is as popular as ever and one major reason is the popularity of fantasy football...

At one time people said the same thing about boxing, horse racing, and bowling. Here in Delaware American football is clearly not as popular as it once was. I see children playing catch with lacrosse sticks, baseball gloves, or kicking soccer balls back and forth. What I don't see is kids playing pick up football games the way they did years ago.

Reminds me of another Newfie joke. You know how the Newfoundlander is riding out this crisis? Net fix! I know it's bad but hey I think it's kind of cute.

LOL I am a fan of the corny joke.

I suppose. I guess I was tired of Kimmi retorting any time somebody said anything about a different sport. We get it, you love baseball. We also love baseball, but we also love other sports. I know she was kidding, but don't make us feel bad because we don't like baseball as much as you do, you know?

I'm just messing Thunder. Don't take it so seriously. I realize that many people have a favorite sport other than baseball. I'm certainly not trying to make anyone feel bad for loving football.

My son is a huge sports fan, and baseball is pretty far down his list of favorites. I give him a hard time about it sometimes, but he knows I'm joking.

Not to mention, football is impossible right now. How are players supposed to social distance in a huddle?

Plus, they do a lot more touching with every single play. For the most part, baseball players don't have to touch each other.

We're good. Don't worry about it

Boring. Waste of public land. Waste of water to maintain. Ruins the environment with over fertilization.

There is a whole George Carlin bit about golf.

I don’t think that golf courses are public land.

But yes, golf sucks. Mark Twain said “Golf is a good walk wasted”
