The Appalachian League is going to die. Maybe all sort season leagues go away or are just pushed to ST facilities.

So sad! The Appalachian league has been around for over a hundred years.

Could not agree more. Years ago when our daughters were young we had seasons tickets to the local Carolina League Class A team. My wife and I and 5 kids would go to the game several times a month during the summer. Could never afford to do that with a major league club.

My favorite summer ever was when my parents bought us season tickets to the PAWSOX. I'm pretty sure it was the 1990 season when thinking about the autographed balls and bats I have at home. One game, I won the trivia answer and got a case of coke, an oil change and a seat warmer. My dad left the seat warmer at the last game of the year on accident.

So, now that there is a 60 man roster in effect this year, one of the big stipulations is that NOBODY can be traded this season unless they are on a 60 man roster. Does that limit the types of deals that can go down at the deadline? Seems to. Also, trade deadline is now 8/31.

The Sox announced their 60 man roster that was actually only 47. (Can they add more later? You'd think they'd add 13 more, in case they want to make a trade.)

The Red Sox’s initial 47-player pool consists of…

Matt Barnes

Ryan Brasier

Colten Brewer

Austin Brice

Nathan Eovaldi

Heath Hembree

Robinson Leyer

Collin McHugh

Mike Shawaryn

Domingo Tapia

Phillips Valdez

Marcus Walden

Ryan Weber

Brandon Workman

Left-handed pitchers

Matt Hall

Kyle Hart

Darwinzon Hernandez

Brian Johnson

Josh Osich

Martin Perez

Eduardo Rodriguez

Jeffrey Springs

Josh Taylor

Catchers

Jett Bandy

Juan Centeno

Kevin Plawecki

Christian Vazquez

Connor Wong

Infielders

Jonathan Arauz

Xander Bogaerts

C.J. Chatham

I don't know half those names. Yikes.

Leyer, Tapia and Andreoli are the only ones I don't really know. The others I recognize from ST.

Tapia is one of those guys with amazing stuff who can make a baseball do just about anything. Except cross the plate. You know the type.

Andreoli is this year’s Steve Selsky...

Who was the other 3rd catcher they had in camp this spring? The name eludes me....

Jonathan Lucroy?

He is expected to be added to the list. Right now it's just some kind of contract restructuring formality.

MLB.com listed projected lineups and rotations for each club. Every one of the Rays pitchers as ranked is arguably better than every one of the Sox pitchers. Boston's lineup is better... but Tampa also has baseball's Number One prospect on their 60-man.

Tampa's pitching is insane. They are my favorites to take the AL East.

I take it he had an opt out date that has already passed...

Boras mentions the possibility of "a whole host of teams" not competing in free agency this winter. Also talks of the advantage of teams that have built ancillary income streams that could load up and control the talent over the next 3-4 years.

It sounds like many teams will be focusing on locking up their young players rather than spending money on free agents.

Is that any different than normal? Whenever a high priced FA is available, there are usually only a few teams that will be in the running for that player. I'm not surprised it'd be worse after this year and worse prior to a new CBA.

There were only a few teams in on Cole, but look where the price tag went.

Fair enough. I got the impression that he was talking about about some of the big spending teams choosing to go a different route this offseason.

Red Sox Rotation:

1. ERod

2. Eovaldi

3. Perez

4. McHugh (for the second half of a half season?)

5. No one

I'll take that 5 spot if nobody else wants it. Not sure if I could handle the people on here that can never find anything good about a player's performance though

I think Toronto might be better than us, too, especially in a shortened season. Their pitching staff got a huge boost with Ryu, and they added a couple veterans on offense. If those young bucks keep hitting, they could be dangerous. Even if it means we suck, I like the unpredictability of a shortened season. Too bad we don't get to see Yankees pitchers plunk Astros all day long. Oh well. The Dodgers still get to do it. That'll be fun

Weber will outperform his low expectations IMO.

Ryu is a high injury risk guy who only pitched in the NL. There's a high likelihood that he gets rocked this season.

I keep thinking in a sprint season, young pitchers will outperform old pitchers. Nate Pearson, the lights-out rookie, could mean more to the BJs than any of their added arms.

I would tend to agree. You'd think they'd have a higher ceiling. Not sure you can get lightning in a bottle out of Ryu or some other retread.

Let's refrain from calling them the BJs until they actually do suck...

True, considering that of the 10 ballparks he's going to pitch in, more than half of them are hitters parks. Camden Yards doesn't count though, because the Orioles offense is about as good as all their minor league teams put together
