There hasn't been enough time for most prospects traded away to prove anything. Some, like Guerra, have proven to be vastly over-rated, but some still show a lot of promise.

One has "proven" he belongs, but it's still too early to judge: Yoan Moncada hit .915 last year at age 24.

Here's a list of all the prospects traded by DD and their highest ranking on soxprospects.com. (Travis Shaw was no longer a prospect when traded.)

1 Yoan Moncada

1 Blake Swihart

3 Manuel Margot

3 Anderson Espinoza

5 Michael Kopech

5 Jalen Beeks

5 Deven Marrero

6 Javier Guerra

7 Luis Ax Basabe

9 Mauricio Dubon

11 Shaun Anderson

12 Wendell Rijo

13 Logan Allen

15 Santiago Espinal

16 Ben Taylor

17 Ty Buttrey

18 Luis Aj Basabe

20 Bautista Gerson

20 Carlos Asuaje

20 Stephen Nogosek

Some are already pretty much sure busts, but let's come back and revisit this list in 3-6 years.

I think this list speaks to a couple of things: first, the unpredictability of stardom or even MLB promotion of prospects -- high-ranked guys like Swihart and Margot, even Marrero (once considered #5 at a time when the farm was loaded), who made The Show but fell out of favor; and second, 20 guys from one farm with at least a cup of coffee in the bigs is a credit to any organization.

In a pennant race, prospect depth affords a club possible call-ups or more likely, trade options when upgrades are needed. Dombrowski deftly used these resources to do his job and build a champion... and if you read Speier's book, Homegrown, while it sometimes hurts to lose a youngster, even scouts and front office types that draft, sign and develop a kid are proud when the return helps them win.

You left out one of DD’s best under-the-radar trades- dealing Deven Marrero for Josh Taylor...

IMO, Dubon, Allen and Buttrey should still be here.

The inclusion of Buttrey is questionable.

Are you saying we shouldn't have traded for Kinsler, or that we could have got him for less?

I would think getting Kinsler for less would have been easier than getting Thornburg for less, especially given what cheap and controllable closers typically go for...

One thing you have to say for DD, he did pretty good with those 2018 deadline trades.

How many teams have made deadline acquisitions that have helped win a ring as much as Eovaldi and Pearce?

Before you say "but he shouldn't have re-signed them", at least consider that question.

I think the year before we got Nunez and Reed in July. We didn’t win a ring, but they were good pick-ups.

Well, I’d say several.

Off the top of my head, Aroldis Chapman, Rickey Henderson and Lou Brock.

Teams that didn’t win the title but got amazing contributions from deadline acquisitions include the Cubs with Rick Sutcliffe, the Yankees with Dave Justice, the Astros with Carlos Beltran and the Tigers with (a very costly) Doyle Alexander...

Cecil Fielder in 96 for the Yanks was a big one

OK 96 postseason Fielder vs 18 postseason Pearce

Fielder 14 games 59 PA 308/390/519 909 OPS 3 HR 14 RBI

Pearce 13 games 47 PA 289/426/658 1083 OPS 4 HR 11 RBI

Now add Eovaldi to Pearce.

I doubt many teams, if any, had a better pair of acquisitions in terms of postseason performance.

An argument can be made that Verlander in 2017 contributed as much as both with his 4-1 2.21 across 36.2 IP...

Don't forget (I wish I could) the Red Sox in 1990 with Larry Anderson, who was great for 15 games... except the guy he was traded for was great for 15 years.

I'd argue that a salary dump of a Hall of Famer belongs in a special category.

In this case motivated by no more than sheer boredom...

I wonder if this Myers thing is even still active. No word from either camp for several days...

If the Padres threw in Orsillo and the Sox gave them O'Brien, I'd make the deal in a minute..

Take it to the man-crush thread...

Never really got the love for Orsillo. I thought he was kind of a chubby, cheerful, and decidedly inferior version of Sean McDonough.

At least he did not go on and on about his fantasy baseball teams as often as McDonough did...
