Hector Velasquez DFAd to make room. Not sure why Chris Mazza and Jeffrey Springs we’re spared here...

You really have a mean streak, don't you?

I see you're laying off Weber and his 0.00 spring ERA, though.

Weber was definitely a pet peeve, but spring training numbers mean nothing to me.

Velasquez has had success in MLB. Not much, but more than Mazza and Springs...

Red Sox signed Collin McHugh to a Major (not minor) League deal...

If he will be healthy, I like this deal. We are relying on our crack staff of medical crackpots, so I am not confident that we will see much of him in uniform. It could be another John Smoltz fiasco, but cheaper.

As for DFA’ing Velasquez, we can probably find 5 or 6 pitchers whose names start with “V” who are better, never mind the rest of the alphabet.

Mazza had a 3.52 FIP in his first taste of MLB last year. Maybe there's something there? Maybe he's just an org arm because they need bodies?

Springs has ok MiLB numbers and was just a swap for a AAAA we didn't need anymore. Is he any worse than Velazquez? IDK.

how long will it take red sox twitter to realize ashley mchugh is the best thing that will ever happen to them

Personally I question McHugh.

For some odd reason, a slew of MLB pitchers suddenly peaked playing for those known cheaters. Cole, Verlander, Morton, and evening McHugh, who was an AAAA arm before arriving in Texas.

I’m suspicious, but hopefully he works out. I do totally understand gambling on him...

Sox already think they have one in Phillips Valdez....

But then again, last off-season my whipping boy was Ryan Brasier and that turned out to be pretty justified....

He'll be good this year, though. :)

It's a one year rental in a lost season. What could go wrong?

McHugh won't be able to pitch for a while. He had a flexor strain too. :P

I thought he was supposed to be throwing in front of a bunch of teams at some point?

here's how this deal was announced down here in Yankees country:

He looked extremely ordinary when I saw him, in fact not even ordinary. The Mets can have him back. Mata and Houck looked much better than Mazza.

I don’t think that will be a problem. The guy sucks.

He really tanked in 2019. Maybe he shouldn't be pitching every winter in Mexico?

Glad to see our boys are getting shelled again today by the *'s who are not even fielding a team of high school second teamers! Season win total just keeps plummeting!

So you're saying run support counts and should be shown in a pitcher's stat line? Actually not a bad idea. Easily as meaningful as W-L record.

You may not be up to date on all the Astros cheating rumors. There's a rumor that their pitchers had higher spin rates because of some sticky substance they were using on the balls.

I know. the idea that teams have tried to bend the rules to win is shocking. Shocking! It's something I've never heard of or experienced in any level of sports, professional, amateur, or weekend.

The Foreign Substance Theory

Or... Justin Verlander found another way to have the 3 lowest WHIPs of his career at ages 34, 35 and 36. Can you name another pitcher ever to do that?

Closest I found was Charlie Morton, who had his 3 lowest WHIPs at ages 33, 34 and 35.

Guess what else Verlander and Morton had in common at those ages?

(Ok, Morton was on Tampa at age 35. But where did he learn this?)

I had note heard that about the sticky substance. It should have been noticeable on the balls tossed out of the game every pitch that touched the ground.

Verlander's peak performance is easily explained by his coming of age with Kate Upton. That would put some balls in spin mode.

Morton is more of a mystery unless he double dated with Verlander and Upton while pitching for Houston. Wait maybe that's the link !

This one's easy to explain; those dudes obviously lost their legs (but it was worth it)... meanwhile, older guys have to hitch a ride on the Blue Bus just for one trip, trying to catch up.
