I do wonder if Bloom wants Gonsolin. I can’t imagine the Dodgers balking there, unless they need to unload Maeda’s $3mill AAV to stay within their budget here...

We'll take Verdugo, Maeda, and a lesser ranked prospect.

And the Dodgers could ask the Red Sox to pay more of David Price's salary.

The Dodgers apparently did not veto the tentative deal.

Why would the Dodgers veto the deal? They get Betts and get to keep Maeda.

I honestly can't see that happening. The Red Sox and Dodgers will lock this down.

I don’t think it’s a bug stretch that the Padres get involved again...

If the Red Sox open it up to other teams again, I'll agree with those who say they're being rinky dink.

This needs to get completed.

Relax . Still time. Remember when the Braves traded Kimbrel less than 48 hours before opening day?

That was a minor transaction compared to this.

I look at it this way. The Padres NEED to dump Myers. He’s their most expensive outfielder by far, and he isn’t even starting. And no one else is going to step in and take him off their hands.

Betts and Price for Myers, Quantrill, Campusano and Cronenworth. No money.

The Sox actually do better vs the luxury tax than they did in the Dodger trade. The Padres get Betts and Price becomes a 2-2.5 fWAR starter for a net cost of $9mill per year, which is cheaper than free agency. The Red Sox get a catching prospect, a young SP, a 2b/SS prospect Bloom knows from Tampa, and, well, Myers. Oh well. Gotta take the bad with the good, I guess.

But because Myers AAV is so low, the Red Sox actually get about $1.2 mill further from the tax limit than they did in the Dodger trade.

Also, Preller gets to thumb his nose at Friedman...

The Padres are insistent on the Sox taking Myers in a Betts trade. How are they then going to take on Price's contract? That isn't happening.

Why? When we acquired Kimbrel a year later, he was a “Hall of Fame closer”...

Rumor has it the Twins are back in play with Graterol going to LA and the Dodgers sending a prospect to the sox

Yes, in 2 separate trades.

Of course it does. Trout's contract greatly restricts the Angels in other areas.

Kimmi, go look at the Angels payroll over the past few mediocre seasons. Trout was underpaid in that time compared to the garbage filling up that roster. The Angels only good contract is Trout.

Excellent point.

I completely agree about the farm system. Bloom was brought in mostly to rebuild the farm, but I think, on the whole, he has a balanced approach. He will be balancing the short term goals with the long term goals.

We have no idea what his approach is or will be. We’re in a holding pattern right now.

I am glad they didn't counter.

Maybe the Sox heard Mookie's counter and saw the writing on the wall. No need to counter.

Then they never wanted him in the first place.

He’s not coming back and it sucks.

Dbags got Marte. They aren’t looking at Betts now.

So you think the Padres would be smarter paying a Myers $61 mil to sit on the bench rather than a net payment of $9mill to Price to pitch?

At some point before Myers’ contract is up, the Padres will be paying a SP $10mill. Possibly next season.

The Padres played hard ball with Price’s contract. But it’s the smart move for them to take it if it means unloading a Myers. Because no way Bloom takes that deal on in a Betts trade without pillaging their farm....

Yeah that should make them competitive with a Dodger lineup including Betts...

No, what I am saying is that they were insisting on Myers going back to Boston in any deal for Betts, ie they don't have the funds to just willy nilly add $27 mil for Betts to the roster. How, then, are they going to add $58 mil to the roster and subtract the same salary?

Posted
So if Graterol goes to the Dodgers, who would you want from the Dodgers to come with Verdugo for Betts?

Twins are out. Graterol isn’t going anywhere...

If they take on Betts and Price and send back Myers, they don’t take on $58mill. They add $36-ish mill...

I entirely understand what you are saying. What I am saying is that the Padres wouldn't just take Betts $27 mil as evidenced by their insistence on dumping Myers on Boston. Hence, they didn't want all $27 mil, even if the player is entirely worth it. If they weren't willing to eat the one year and $27 mil of Betts' deal, then why would they then be willing to add $31 more mil on top of that to dump the same contract? Do you see what I am saying here?

Bottom line is, per your post yesterday, other teams are interested in Betts and Price now. Whether or not I guess the teams is immaterial. Bloom just needs to talk to any interested party...
